Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
GEORGE A. OOLTON AND SYLVESTER P. BABOOOK, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BINDERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,111, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A. OOLTON and SYLvEs'rER P. BABoocK, of Adrian, in the county oi' Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sewing- Machine Attachments; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ot' the drawing is a top view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5,6, 7 and S are details.
Our invention has relation to certain improvements in sewing-machine attachments, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement ot' a binder with an adjustable under guide-hook, designed to permit the width of the binding on either side of the cloth to be varied at will; also, in the construction and novel arrangement of an adjustable gauge.
A ot' the drawing represents the base-plate, turned over at each side. B designates the gaugeplate, arranged to slide on the plate A, being attached thereto by the lips a c', formin g grooves a. a at each side thereof. Suitable slots b b are made in the gauge-plate to prevent obstruction by the end of the presser-plate, and by the setscrew which fastens the bed-plate to the plate of the sewing-machine. An elongated opening, c, is provided, to admit the binder or other sewingmachine attachment. D is the gauge, bent up from the front of the gauge-plate. c c represent the uprights or bea-rings for the adjusting-screw k. r1`hey are formed by bending up portions of the overlying lip a which contines the gaugeplate to the bed-plate.
H represents the upper guide of the binder, which is xed in position and secured to the base-plate by a clamp-screw and the button a. L represents the lower and adjustable guide, slotted at o, and bent upward at the rear end to meet the upper plate H. It is also provided with the fixed nut z and the adjusting-screw k.
W'hen in position, the width of binding on the upper side ofthe cloth is regulated by means ot' the adjustable gauge D, the upper guide H being stationary. The width of the binding on the lower side ofthe cloth is regulated by sliding the lower guide backward and forward, by means of the adjusting-screw k, at the same time that portion fr, which is bent upward from the rear, serves to prevent the sliding plate from riding upward, and thereby throwing the adjusting-screw 7c out of its bearings.
Vhen the gauge is properly adj usted the plate is secured in'position by means of the same clampscrew which 'astens the bed-plate to sewing-inachine plate.
I/Ve claim- The combina-tion, with the bdplate A having the bearings e c, of the variable binder herein described having the station ary upper guide H, and the adjustable lower guide L provided with the adjusting devices c k, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. A. OOLTON. SYLVESTER P. BABOOOK.
