Description

H. H. SUPER. ADJUSTABLE FURNITURE SIANDARD.
mgm@
RAYMOND H. SOPER, OF MUSKEGON, yMICHIGAN, ASSIGNOB TO SUPERIOR SEATING COMPANY, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGANLA CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
ADJUs'rABLE FURNITURE-STANDARD.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND I-I. SOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the vcounty of Muskegon and State otMichigan, have vinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Furniture-Standards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the standards of school seats, desks and similar articles of furniture, the 4object being to provide a standard which shall -be readily adjustable, which may be easily and securely locked in adjusted position, and which shall be of simple and inexpensive construction.
- In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a Seat provided with a standard embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section,
of the standard. Fig. 3 is a sectional vlew taken in the plane of dotted line 3'3 of Fig. 2.
The seat, proper, and the back may be of any preferred character. The supporting standard l consists of two tubular telescoping sections 2 and 3, the' section 2 being fixed to the seat, and the section 3 being provided with a base or foot 4 adapted to\be secured to the floor. v'Ihe section 2 extends within the section 3. hile the standard sections may be constructed of any suitable material, they are shown as formed of sheet metal. Il
desired, the upper end of thesection 3 may be reinforced by an encircling band 5 welded in place.
j The means for securing the section 2 at the desired height with reference to the section 3 comprises two clamp members 6 and 7 mounted upon a spindle 8.l The clamp member 6 has a screw-thread connection with the threaded portion a of the spindle 8. The spindle is rotatably connected to the clamp member 7, said member being confined on the spindle between the shoulder I) and the riveted or expanded end c of the spindle. One end portion of the spindle 8 is rotatably supported in an opening 9 formed in the standard section 3, the oppo-A site end portion of the spindle being rotatably mounted in'an opening 10 formed in the upper end of a brace 11, the lower end of which brace is fixed to the inner side of the section 3. The end of the spindle Specification of Letters Patent. l

which projects through the opening 9 is of angular form (as el) so asto be adapted to receive a wrench. The head Z and the screwthreaded portion of the spindle are of substantially the same diameter, so that it is practically impossible for the user to twist the head oit the spindle. In the standard Asection 2 is a. vertical slot l2 through which the'spindle 8 extends, the brace 1l also extending through said slot when the section v2 is lowered. A strip 13 iixed to theclamp member 6 extends upwardly in position to close that portion of the slot 12 which extends above the section 3.
If desired, the clamp members 6 and 7 may be formed of sheet metal, as hereinindicated. In order to provide 'a greater thickness of metal for engagement by the screwthreaded partof the spindle 8, a nut Ga may be welded to the member 6. A washer 7a may be welded to the member 7 to provide a wider bearing for said member on the spindle 8.
It will be seen that rotation of the spindle 8 in the appropriate direction will cause the clamp members 6 andv7 to move away from each other, and thus expand the lower slotted portion ott-the standard section 2 into close contact with the section 3, thereby locking the'section 2 in the position to which it has previously been adjusted.
I claim as my invention:
l. A furniturestandard comprising two telescoping sections, the inner section being expansible, two expansion members in the inner section, a spindle on which said melnbers are mounted, said spindle bearing against one of said members and having a screw-thread connection with the other member, said spindle extending rotatively tl'irough an opening in the outer section, and
a brace attached to theouter section and having a bearing opening through which the spindle extends.
2. In a furniture standard, the combina tion of two telescoping tubular, sections, the
inner section bein expansible, two inde-V pendent clamping locks located within the inner section and movable toward and away from each other, and a transverse spindle passing through an opening in the outer section and having a threaded engagement with 'ne clamping block and bearing against @he @Meer elem in block sa?" s ndle. hav- 2 ,f mg a head thereon at the outer side of the atender for turning the spindle.
3., .15.- furniture Yexpameble, "two'expansion members in the -mner -sectrom7 e rotary screw spmdle for movlng said members toward and away from eeoh other to] expand and release the inner standard comprising two' teeseopmgsect10ns,the nlner sectlon bemg'
