To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDMOND S. Amrznn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Copper Valley, in the county of Floyd and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in churning Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to churns and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient mechanism for holding a detachable cover upon the churn in such a manner as to allow the cover to be readily removed in order that access may be readily had to the interior thereof.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient gear mechanism for driving the churning paddles.
A still further object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient rotating paddle mechanism for efficiently churning the cream from which the butter is made.
l/Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the churn whlch is formed of any desired construction, preferably tapering toward the top thereof and carrying reinforcing bands 2 as clearly lllustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The body 1 is provided with a bottom 3, which bottom carries a platform 4: upon the upper face thereof. A pair of spaced spindles 5 are secured to the platform 4:, and these spindles constitute pivot means for the lower ends 6 of the paddles 7. The lower ends 6 of the paddles 7 are provided with apertures 8 for fitting over the spindles 5, thereby allowing the paddles 7 to be readily and easily placed upon the spindles 5. The paddles 7 comprise a pair of substantially parallel members which are connected at their upper ends by means of disks 9, and these parallel members of one paddle are so arranged as to extend at right angles to the parallel members of the adjacent paddle, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Each disk 9 of each paddle is provided with a squared aperture 10 for the purpose of receiving the squared shanks 11 of the driving shafts 12. Each driving shaft 12 extends through a bushing 13 carried by the cover or top 14, and a gear wheel 15 is carried by each shaft 12 and is held thereon by means of a key 16. The upper end of each shaft 12 fits in a bearing block 17.
The cover or top a is provided with a hinge section 19 which is normally held in a closed position by means of a locking clasp 20. The section 19 is hinged upon the main portion of the top 1 so as to allow access to be had to the interior of the body 1 for the purpose of fitting the shank portions 11 of the shafts 12 into the squared apertures 10 of the disks 9.
The top 4: is provided with a plurality of spaced frame bars 21 which are held together by means of the transversely extending connecting members. A main operating shaft 23 is journaled between and upon the spaced members 21 and carries an operating crank 24:. This shaft 23 carries a driving gear 25 which meshes with a pinion 26 carried by the auxiliary driving shaft 27. The auxiliary driving shaft 27 is provided with a gear wheel 28 which is keyed thereto, and
this gear wheel 28 meshes with a gear 29,
with laterally extending feet 33, which laterally extending feet 33'are provided with notches 34 formed therein for the purpose of receiving the tie wires 35 carried by the cover 4. These tie wires 35 are connected to the cover 4 by means of screws 36 and support a locking band 37 upon the lower ends thereof as illustrated clearly in Figs.
4 and 6. The anchoring rods 32 are provided with upwardly extending necks 38 which are adapted to lit in the sockets 39 formed in the top 4 and in the hinge portion 19 as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. It will, therefore, be seen that these anchoring rods 32 by means of the necks 38 will firmly hold the cover 4. against lateral displacement from the body 1.
As above stated and as clearly illustrated in detail in Fig. 6, the locking band 37 engages the auxiliary portion 40 of the locking clamp which auxiliary portion 40 engages the pivotally mounted primary portion 41 of the locking clamp, and this primary portion 41 engages a metallic link 42 which is connected to the opposite end of the 'i locking band 37. These tie wires 35 are adapted to engage or fit within the notches 34 of the laterally extending feet 33, and the clamping band 37 is adapted to be clamped firmly around the body 1 by swinging the 7 primary portion 41 of the clamp so as to lie fiat upon the auxiliary portion 40 thereof as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5, thereby preventing the accidental removal of the top 1 4 from the body 1.
further that the cover moved from the body when so desired, and '55 From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient device has been produced for the purpose of bolding the top or cover of a churn against accidental removal from the body thereof, and may be readily realso that the paddles may be removed from the body for the purpose of cleaning the same when so desired.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be seen that the gearing mechanism for actuating the churn is cov ered by means of a housing 25', which housing is provided with a door 26 to facilitate the access to the interior of the housing.
It should be understood that the gears or pinions carried by the blades are beveled upon their outer faces so as to taper toward the upper ends of the gears. These beveled portions are adapted to allow the pinions carried by the paddles to easily mesh with the driving gear positioned intermediate these pinions. This structure is clearly illustrated in the drawings.
Having thus described the invention what claimed as new, is
1. A churn of the class described comprising a body, a cover detachably supported thereon, a plurality of anchoring members secured to said body and provided with upwardly extending neck portions, said body provided with a plurality of apertures for receiving said neck portions, and a locking band suspended from said cover and engaging said body for detachably holding said cover upon said body.
2. A churn of the class described comprising a body, a cover therefor, a churning mechanism carried thereby, anchoring members secured to said body and provided with projecting neck portions, said cover provided with apertures formed therein for the purpose of receiving said neck portions whereby said cover will be held against accidental lateral displacement from said body, each anchoring member provided with a laterally extending foot, and a clamping band suspended from said cover and extending under said laterally extending feet of said anchoring members for preventing the accidental removal of said cover from said body.
3. A churn of the class described comprising a body, a cover supported thereon, a churning mechanism carried by said cover, a plurality of anchoring members provided with upwardly extending neck portions carried by said body, said cover provided with sockets for receiving said neck portions, said anchoring members provided with laterally extending feet having notches formed upon the outer ends thereof, tie wires suspended from said cover, a locking band carried by said tie wires, a clamp engaging said locking band for clamping the same firmly around said body, and said tie wires fitting in said notches for firmly locking said cover upon said body.
