To all w 700m it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Elkins Park, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Numbering-Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to numbering machines of the class used in numbering cards, checks, or other articles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved machine of the class specified adapted to be operated either by power or manually and which involves a numbering device of well-known form and construction.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved numbering machine with part of the construction broken away; Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing only a part of the machine and that on an enlarged scale, and with parts broken away; Fig. 3 a front view of that part of the machine shown in Fig. 2 and on the same scale; Fig. i a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts in section and in a different position; Fig. 5 a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 and on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 6 a side view of the numbering device proper which I employ and showing the same as designed for use by hand, and with part of the construction in section.
In the practice of my invention 1 provide a frame, comprising a base member a having an upright standard a provided with a top horizontal arm a and below said arm a with a supplemental arm a both of which extend in the same direction, and the arm a is provided with a table a and the arm a with a head a provided with depending side guide plates a and the head a and the side guide plates at are directly over the table (4 On the top of the standard a and the arm a are bearings a in which is mounted a horizontal shaft 1) provided at its front end with a crank disk 6 having an eccentric pin 6 and at its rear end with a crank disk 72 hav- -provided with longitudinal tongues ing an eccentric pin 6 with which is connected a'rod 0 which is also connected with a shorter arm (1 of a treadle d pivoted in the bottom of the standard a at 0Z and the longer arm d of which projects forwardly and is provided with a foot piece and the arm (Z is also connected with the frame of the machine or with the arm a thereof by a contractile spring e, and by means of the treadle (Z the shaft 6 may be oscillated, as will be readily understood, and said shaft is also provided with a belt wheel or similar device by which it may be driven or operated by power, if desired, in which event said shaft would be rotated.
A crank rod 9 is connected with the crank pin 6 of the crank disk 6 and extends downwardly through the head a of the arm a as clearly shown, and mounted between and vertically movable between the side guide plates a is a numbering device it of well-known construction and similar to that described and claimed in U. S. Letters Pat ent No. 789,113 and 789,114: granted May 2, 1905.
The numbering device it involves a yokeshaped frame If having side members h h; which operate in corresponding grooves in the guide plates M, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, and said numbering device also involves type disks or wheels 72. rotatably mounted in the bottom of the yoke-shaped frame and also vertically movable and operated by a rod 71, which passes up through a guide sleeve 7L7 connected with the yoke-shaped frame 72. and the rod 72. at its upper end is threaded into a cross head 9 rotatably mounted in a yoke-shaped head g with which the lower end of the crank rod 9 is provided, and within the sleeve 72. is placed a spiral spring i which bears on the cross head 9, and on the top of the yoke-shaped frame h or the bottom of the sleeve 7L7.
The numbering device it is provided between the side members if of the yokeshaped frame 7:? with a pivoted pad carrying frame j in which is pivoted an inking device y' which operates in connection with the type disks or wheels k and which consists of a plate j in which is placed an inking pad 9' and the plate 7' is provided with side ears j by which connection with the frame 3' is made. All this construction of the numbering device it is the same as in the patents hereinbefore referred to and forms no part of this invention, but in said patents the said numbering device is adapted to be operated by hand only and this form thereof is shown in Fig. 6 of the accompanying drawing. With my improvement, the inking device, or the bottom plate 7' thereof, is provided with 'a backwardly directed extension j and the pad j is also extended backwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 4. I also provide means for automatically supplying ink to the pad j, and in this operation I secure to the arm a a hanger 71: having a horizontal bottom part and mounted on said bottom part 76 is a receptacle onhaving a base or bottom portion m secured in the part 70 of the hanger 7s, and said part m is provided with a central tube m which communicates with the receptacle m and also with a tube on connected with the bottom 70 of the hanger l: and extends forwardly and downwardly and is adapted to discharge liquid ink onto the pad 9' of the inking device when said inking device'is in the position shown in Fig. 4.
In the use of this device liquid ink is placed in the receptacle m as shown at 'n, and in said receptacle is a vertically movable plunger o-having a stem 0 which passes up through the top of the receptacle and is pro vided with a milled head 0 and a spring 79 is secured to the top of the receptacle m and is provided with a vertically arranged end portion 79 which bears on the perimeter of the milled head '0 as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and whenever it is desired to ink the pad j pressure is applied on the head 0 and the plunger 0 forces said ink through the tube m but under normal conditions the ink will not flow through the tube m The ink supply device comprising the receptacle m and its connected parts, in their details of construction, are not of my invention, as a device similar to this has heretofore been used as an oiler or lubricator, and my invention is not limited to the ink supply device shown in Fig. 4:, nor to the exact details of the numbering device it, as herein shown and described.
In Fig. 6, I have shown the numbering device it as adapted for use by hand, as shown and described in the patents hereinbefore referred to, and in the use of this device as a part of my invention, I detach the head or handle 1' and screw the rod h into the cross head 9 of the crank rod g, as hereinbefore described, and provide the ink pad holder 7' with the backwardly directed extensions j, and'the side members 11, of said numbering device with the tongues 72;.
In the operation of my improved numbering machine the cards, checks or other devices to be numbered are placed on the table a and one of these cards or checks will be numbered at each downward movement of the numbering device it, and at each of said downward movements the inking device j will be moved backwardly into the position shown in Fig. 4, and at each upward movement, said inking device will be thrown into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the type disks or wheels 71. will be inked, and ink may be forced through the tube m, as hereinbefore described, whenever desirable, or necessary in order to keep the pad j in proper condition.
The crank disk 12 is provided with two holes or apertures s and s in either of which the crank pin 6 may be secured, and when the shaft b is oscillated by means of the treadle d and spring 0, as herein described, the crank pin 6 is secured in the hole or aperture .9 but when said shaft is rotated by means of the belt wheel 7 the crank pin 6 must be secured in the hole or aperture 8. This being necessary in order to provide for the proper movement of the numbering device h under either of the above conditions.
The numbering device 71. is also provided with a bottom plate t having an aperture 13 and this enables the said bottom plate to serve as a gage for centering a workpiece or card, check or other article, as will be readily understood.
It must be understood that the numbering device 72. forms no part of my invention, as hereinbefore set out, and therefore the detail construction thereof is not shown and described, the numbering device used being fully shown and described in the patents hereinbefore referred to, and my invention is also not limited to any specific form of numbering device, and any device of this class adapted to work in the position shown and described may be employed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2- 1. In a numbering machine, a frame provided with a table, a shaft mounted horizontally in the top of the frame, vertically arranged guide plates, a vertically movable numbering device mounted between said guide plates, said guide plates and number ing device being provided, one with grooves and the other with parts movable in said grooves, and said numbering device being also provided with an inking member movable into different positions, and an ink supplying device supported rearwardly of said guide plates and provided with a pipe which extends downwardly to and is adapted to communicate with said inking member in its different positions.
2. In a numbering machine, a frame provided with a table, a shaft mounted in the top portion of the frame, said frame being also provided with a vertically arranged guide plate having vertical grooves in their inner faces, a vertically movable numbering device mounted between said guide plate and provided with parts movable in said groove, said numbering device being also geared in connection with said shaft, and said numbering device being also provided with an automatically operating inking member movable into different positions, and means for supplying ink to said inking member.
8. In a numbering machine, a frame provided with a table, a shaft mounted in the top portion of the frame, said frame being also provided with a vertically arranged guide plate having vertical grooves in their inner faces, a vertically movable numbering device mounted between said guide plate and provided with parts movable in said groove, said numbering device being also geared in connection with said shaft, and
Copies of this patent may be obtained for said numbering device being also provided with an automatically operating inking member movable into difiierent positions, and means for supplying ink to said inking member consisting of an ink supply reservoir mounted rearwardly of said guide plates and provided with a tube which eX- tends downwardly to and is adapted to communicate with said inking member in its different positions.
