One ol' the principal objects of the invendevice which may either be used as a readily applied attachment to existing machines, or at least which will involve nothing beyond simple and inexpensive changes in such machines.
The work-sheets are provided with rows of pertorations along their side borders, and they are laid face down upon a suitable support. and there impaled upon gage pins by means of said perfor-ations. The gage pins extend in rows from front to rear along the sides of said support; although one row of gage pins may be omitted in some cases.
The leading edges of the sheets are nearest to the revolublc platen of the typewriter; the sheets in fact. occupying about the same positionsas they do when they are being insei-ted into a typewriter in the ordinary manner. the leading edge of the sheet being presented to the rear of the plat'en. the sheet being inverted so that the leading edge is at the bottom for this purpose,`\\'hile the rear side of tbe sheet faces the operator'.
On the face of the sheet the gaging perforations along its side are numbered, these numbers indicating the places for the lines of writing, and being usually at intervals equal to the line-spacing movements of the platen.
In practising the present iniprovements, the sheets are also provided with numbers on their rear faces, so that each perforation is numbered the same on both the front and rear face of the sheet. The numbers on the rear side appear in their natural positions when the sheet is being laid upon thc gage pins. the numbers on the rear side running from the leadingedge to the lin-al edge, but each number being inverted in relation to the corresponding number on the front face of the sheet, so that the numbers on both sides of the sheet are easily read in their natural positions whether the operator is looking at the front or rear side thereof.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that the operator needs only to lay the sheets upon the support or sheet-board, very much as he would in inserting the sheets in an ordinary typewriter, and that he may pla-ce any sheet in desired relation with any other sheet, by studying the numbers of the gage perforations.
After inserting the necessary carbon sheets, the operator withdraws the gage pins and advances the sheets to the platen without disturbing their relative positions, until they reach the position for receiving the first line of writing, which will fall upon the desired lines of the various sheets.
The advancing of the assembled sheets to the platen is preferably eected by turning an endless web upon which they are assemfbled, which serves as a sheet-supporting board while they are being assembled. This web may run over rolls, and may be connected to thel platen by any suit-able gearing, as for instance a sprocket and chain gearing, so that the surface speed of the web will equal the surface speed of the platen. The assembled sheets are held on the web by rolls, so that the sheets are properly advanced to and around'the platen, whereupon they are controlled by the usual feed rolls which run upon the bottom of the platen.
The rolls which cooperate with the web are releasable to give, clearance for assembling the sheets; and preferably a single motion both releases the rolls and restores the gage pins to protruding positions; a reverse motion causing a simultaneous retraction of the pins and movement of the rolls to positions to cooperate with the web. The same arrangement as to rolls and pins may be made at each side of the web.
Other Objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective front view of the present improvements applied to the paper carriage 'of an Underwood front-strike typewriting machine. Fig. Q is a view to show the special feed'rolls retracted and the gage pins protruded at the left-hand side of the feed web; the severalv sheets being shown impaled upon the gage pins. Fig. 3 is aview similar to Fig. Q, but showing the pins withdrawn and the feed rollsl thrown into working positions. Fig. 4 illustrates the movement of the controlling lever from the Fig. I3 position toward the Fig. 2 position. Fig. .3 is a front sectional diagrammatic elevation of the invention in its preferred form, showing both feed rolls and gage pins at each side of the sheet assembling board. The Vnderwood Y usually comprises types 1 which strike upon die front side of a platen 2- mouiited by means of an axle 3 and ends 4. 5, of a platen frame. said ends connected by a paper shelf o. and the axle usually haying hand wheels 'T for rotating the platen. The platen frame is yusually mounted upon a carriage, a part of which is .seen at 8. The work-sheets 13. 14, 15 are laid upon an extension of the paper shelf G. this extension in the form of a web 16 which runs over upper and lower pulleys or rolls 17. 1S which are journaled by means of axles in a pair of side frames 19, 20 extending upwardly and rearwardly from the ends of the paper shelf and connected by tie-rods 21. The frame 'is supported upon the paper shelf o b v means of downwardly extend ingtongues 2-i which rest upon a transverse rod Q4 usually fixed to the platen frame and extending along behind the upper rear side of the paper `shelf. The tongues at their lower ends extend beyond this rodl 'J-l and bear up against the rear of the paper shelf. Shoulders or lugs :'25 on the tongues rest upon the rod Q4 to support the side frames.

The-holes QG are `numbered as shown in Fig. 1. on the rear sides of the sheets. and will be easily read by the operator when t \fpewriting machine the .sheet is viewed in the position in which it is naturally presented to the platen, namely. leading edge down and with its rear side to the ojierator. These perforation numbers .are therefore read from the leading edge to the opposite edge of the sheet, but stand upside down when the sheet is placed with its leading edge at the top. These numbers. however. correspond to the iuniilers seen at 2S) on the front of the worksheets. so that the operator. by regarding! the rear numbers. may ell'ect any desired relative position of the sheets.

Each of the pressurel rolls 32, 33 is carried in a frame 4() swiveled at 41 between opposite arms 42 which are fixed upon a hub 43, the latter capable of limited rotation upon the rock shaft 39 or 44. as the case may be. In order that each roll 32 may bear against the paper independently. of the other rolls, each is provided with an individual spring 45 connected at one end to a collar` 46 on the rock shaft and at the other end engaging one of the arms 4Q. The independent movement of the arms 42 is limited by a pin 47 projecting from the rock shaft 39 through a slot 48 in the hub The rock shaft 39 is held in its effective position by means of a. spring detent 49 engaging a notch 5() in the hub of arm 3S. It will be understood that the structure at the .right-hand side of the frame corresponds to tha/t at the left-hand side throughout, so that the, description of one suiiices for both, although in some eases the gage pins at one side of the structure may be omitted. together with the corresponding bar 28 and shaft 35. A spring 51 is coiled around the gage pin shaft 35 to hold the pins 27 up in normal protriided positions and to return them to such positions when the operator swings the handle 30 to the. left to withdraw the feed rolls 32.

A\fter the sheets are brought under the control of the rolls 5G, 5T, the rolls 32 and need no longer be depended upon, and the sheets' are now advanced by turning the hand wheel T to be brought. into position Thereafter the writing may proceed line by line in the usual manner. If desired, the operator may then reverse the direction of rotation of the platen, and the web 1G, to return the sheets to positions to be impaled upon the pins again, and for this purpose the rolls may be lifted sutliciently to permit the introduction of the sheets between thesame and the web without causing the pins 2T to protrude above the side plates 19, 20. As soon as the sheets have been retracted far enough, the rollsl 33 may be castoff and the pins projected, and the sheets may then be pressed down upon the pins, and if desired one or more sheets may be withdrawn and other sheets substituted preparatory to advancing the re-assembled sheets to the platen. The retraction of the sheets in the manner stated is not, however, necessary in all cases. The movement of the frames t0 about their pivots 41 is limited by pins 60 on the frames extendinginto openings 6l in the arms 4'2.
IIt will be seen that by 'a very simple appliance the operator is enabled to place the sheets in any desired relationship to one another and then to preserve such relationvship while .the sheets are being advanced around the under side of the platen in the usual manner into position to receive the writing. To connect the t'wo shafts 39 and 44 to work in unison, there may be provided a transverse rock shaft 6'2 having on its ends beveled pinions 63, 64C to mesh with segments (35, 66 on the rock shafts.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention. I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination witha revoluble platen, of a frame, an endless web on said frame arranged to provide a support on which to adjust a work-sheet while the web is at rest, means to drive the web. and holding means to eX- tend over the sheet and hold it against the web in its adjusted position thereon and f cause it to be advanced with the web and thereby fed to the platen, said holding means arranged to be withdrawn to permit adjustment of the work-sheet on thel web.
2. ln a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a paper shelf at the introductory side of the platen, of a frame supported on said shelf. an endless work-sheet feeding web on the frame, forming, when at rest, a support on which to` adjust work-Sheets. and means to hold super-posed work-sheets in different relative positions of adjustment on said web. the latter having its upper face extending substantially in alinement with the paper shelf and terminating at the rear end of said shelf.
3. In a typewriting machine. the combination with a revoluble platen. of'a series of pins arranged to engage perforations in the side marginsI of work-sheets, and upon which the work-sheets maybe variously positioned at ditl'erent degrees of advancement by means of said marginal perforations, and means to withdraw said pins and free the work-sheets without changing the positions of the work-sheets.
4t. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a series of pins upon which work-sheets may be positioned by means of marginal perforations, means to feed the work-sheets to the platen, and means to withdraw said pins so that the Work-sheets may be fed to the platen.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with av revoluble platen, of two series of pins, one at each end of the platen on which work-sheets may be positioned by means of marginal perforations, said sets of pins being parallel and extending away from the platen, and means to withdraw said pins and permit the worksheets to be fed to the platen.

9. In atypewriting machine, the combination of a revoluble platen, a separate support for aiwork--sheet, a row of positioning'pins whereby the work-sheet may be positioned on said support by means of marginal perforations, saidA row extending i angles to the platen, and means for moving all'of said pins as a unit into and out of position to engage the work-sheet.
10. Thefcombination with a support having a fiat supporting surface for a worksheet, of a series-of pins positioned to extend through marginal openings along the ed fe of the work-sheet, pressure rollers movabe into and out of engagement with a work-sheet at said surface to hold the sheet aga-inst said su port, and means for simultaneously with( rawing said pins and moving'saidrollers against the work-sheet.l
11. In a typewriting. machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a worksheet carrier at the introductory-side of the platen, feed rolls in: position to support said carrier and a-worksheet thereon, and pressure rolls above the feed rolls and worksheetand movable into and out of engagement with the work-sheet on said carrier, and -coperating with the feed rolls and carrier to advance the work-sheet.
12. In a typewritin machine, the combination with a revolub e platen, of a paper shelf at the introductory side of the platen and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, feed rolls, an endless web extending around said rolls and presenting a support for a work-sheet substantially in alinement with thepaper shelf, means to drive said rolls, pressure rollers located above saidvweb, and movabley into and out of position to bear against the work-sheet supported on said web.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of an endless work-sheet conveyer on which work-sheets may lie-arranged at the introductory side of the platen, means to drive the conveyor and advance theI work-sheets to the platen, pressure rolls to run on the work-sheets and hold them on the conveyor, and means to shift said rolls away from the conveyer to permit the placing and adjustment of the sheets on the conveyor.
14. Ina typewritingmachine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of an endless work-sheet conveyor located at and movable withthe work-sheet toward the introductory side ofrthe laten, ressure rolls to run upon and hold t e wor `l-sheet on said conveyer, gearing between said conveyor and the platen gto. .advance said conveyer at the same speed 'as the periphery of the platen when the latter is rotated, means to shift the said rollsaway from the conveyor to permit adjustment ofthe work-sheet on the eonveyer, and means to hold the work-sheet in adjusted position while the rolls are away from the conveyer.
15. In a typewritinfr machine, the combination with a revolub e platen, of pulleys at the-introductory side of the platen, an endless worlt-sheet conveyer extending over said pulleys and movable toward the introductory side of the platen, a. sprocket and chain drive between the platen and one of said pulleys, and means to engage the work-sheet to hold it on said conveyer and cause it to be fed to the platen, said means shiftable to clear the conveyer and permit the manual placing and adjustment of the work sheet on the conveyor.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination,with a platen, of a support for a work-sheet at the introductoryside of the platen, a roel: shaft parallel with the side edge of the work-sheet, rollers parallel to the platen and supported by said rock shaft,
said rollers positioned .to bear against the work-sheet on said support, and means to rock saidrock shaft and swing said rollers away from said support.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a frame at the introductory side of the platen, means to support a work-sheet on said frame, rock shafts loca-ted at opposite ends of the platen and parallel with the side edges offthe worksheets, rollers carried hy said rock shafts and adapted to bear against the work-sheets with their axes parallel to the platen axle, and means for rocking said shafts and carrying the rollers supported thereby into and ont of engagement with a work-sheet.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination .with a revolnble platen, of a frame at the introductory side of the platen, means to support a work-sheet on said frame, rock shafts located at opposite ends of the platen and parallel with the side edges of the worksheets, rollers carried by saidA rock shafts and adapted to bear against the work-sheets with theiraxes parallel to the platen axle, means for rocking said shaftsand carrying the rollers supported thereby into and out of engagement with a work-sheet, a series of pins adjacent each rock shaft to position a work-sheet by means of marginal openings in the work-sheet. and means to withdraw each series of pins when the corresponding uq rock shaft is operated to move its rolls into engagement with the work-sheet.

21. The combination of a plate-n, a'support for a work-sheet, a bar carrying a series of pins in position to engage marginal openings in the work-sheet and thereby position the work-sheet on said support, means to swing said bar and therebyy withdraw -said pins from the work-sheet, and a sheetholding and advancing device to carry the sheet to the platen after the pins are withmeans for moving said positioning and holding devices alternately into and out of engagement with the work-sheet, and means for advancing said support and thereby feeding the sheet thereon to the platen when the sheet is released from the positioning devices.

The combination with a plate-n, of a support for a work-sheet, a rock shaft, a frame on said roel; shaft, a row of positioning pins extending at right angles to the platen and carried by said frame, means to swing the rock shaft into and out of position to project said pins above the face of said support, and a device to advance the sheet from said support to the platen.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen, of pulleys, a.
web extending around said pulleys and presenting a substantially fiat support for a work-sheet, said support located at the introductory side of the platen and arranged to permit the work-sheets to be placed thereon while the web is at rest, means to engage the work-sheets while in said position and square them with the platen, means to hold the work-sheets on the web tobe advanced thereby to the platen, and means for driving said web.
27. The combination with` a revoluble platen, of a sheet-engaging device by which work-sheets may be collated and positioned relativel)Y to the platen by means. of perforations alongr their side edges before the sheets are carried to the platen, said sheets being` releasable from said collating device to permit thesheets to be carried to the platen, and means for preserving the adjustment of the, sheets when released and carrying` them to the platen.
