ELECTROMAGNETICALLY OPERATED BELL.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1. 1914.

ELECTBOMAGNETICALLY-OPERATED BELL.
llJlWItMW.
T 0 all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, CARL J. SCHWARZE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigain'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetically Operated Bells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to electric bells and comprises the novel construction and arrangement of striker mechanism as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings :-F igure 1 is a front elevation of the bell with the cover of the housing for the mechanism removed; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vieW similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified construction.
A is the base or supporting frame upon which is mounted the bell B, and beneath the bell is a housing C forinclos'ing the opcrating mechanism. This mechanism'comprises an electro-magnetic, vibratory unit D, which actuates a reciprocatory striker rod E projecting upward and adapted to impinge against the bell B. The unit D includes a supporting bracket E, a horse-shoe electro-magnet F mounted thereon, a vibratory armature G, a. vibratory circuit-interrupter H and a condenser I; all of these parts being mounted upon the bracket E so as to constitute a single unit. The striker rod E extends vertically through a guide bearing in the bracket E and at its lower end is attached to a spring J in the path of the armature G while an abutment spring .l is provided for limiting the movement of the armature in the opposite direction. The arrangement is such that whenever the armaturc is attracted by the magnet it will move Specification of Letters latent.

the striker E upward, and upon theinterruption in the electric circuit the striker will be returned by the tension of the spring J assisted by gravity.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3, a polarized magnet is employed, comprising horseshoe permanent magnet K, which is arranged to surround the unit D. The upper ends of the horseshoe are provided with pole pieces L which project inward and are clamped in contact with the core members of the ele'ctro-magnet.
In operation, whenever the circuit is closed the armature is set into-vibration and will impart its vibratory movement to the striker E. This will cause the sounding of the bell, and by reason of the fact that a rigid rod is employed as a striker instead of a flexible arm there is no necessity for ad justment.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a frame or base, of a bell mounted thereon, a housing on said base adjacent to said bell, an electro-magnetic vibratory unit arranged within said housing, a striker rod actuated axially by said vibratory unit and adapted to impinge against said bell, and a horseshoe permanent magnet surrounding said unit and adapted to polarize the magnet thereof.
2. The combination with a bell, of an electro-magnetic unit, a striker rod actuated axially by said unit and adapted to impinge against said bell, and. a horseshoe permanent magnet surrounding said unit and adapted to polarize the magnet thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL J. SCHWVARZE.
