BORING-MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHELBERT L. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boring machines and more particularly to cross-arm boring machines; and it has for its object to provide automatic means for clamping cross-arms in place in a machine of the character indicated and automatic means for feeding the boring bits through the cross-arms. I attain this object by means of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a crossarm boring machine equipped with my automatic clamping and bit'feeding devices. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the machine. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line AA of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a plan view of the machine. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the means employed for adjusting the clamping lever with its cam lever. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the eccentric bearing used to throw the friction wheel in or out of engagement.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the frame of a cross-arm boring machine mounted on legs 2 and carrying a cross-arm table 3 held to its proper vertical adjustment by means of adjusting screws 4 operated by hand wheels 5. Cross-arm stops 6 are adjustably attached to the table 3. A cross arm 7 is held against the stops 6 by means of a side clamp 8 which is operated by toggle links 9 and levers 10 carried by a shaft 11 rotatively mounted in bearing brackets 12. Upper clamps 13 are pivotally mounted on the brackets 12 at 14 and are held against the cross-arm 7 by means of toggle links 15 and levers 16 which are mounted on the operating shaft 11. Simultaneous operation of the side-and-upperclamps is secured by rocking of operating shaft 11 which is provided with a lever 17 pivotally connected with an operating rod 18 by means of a pin 19 which may be adjusted to the desired position in a groove 20 provided in the rod 18 as shown in detail in Fi 5. are also mounted a rotative cam 24 and its drive gear 25. Reciprocatory motion of the slide-bar 21 is secured from the cam 24 by means of a pin 26 carried by the slide bar and engaging a groove 27 in the cam 24.
A series of horizontal boring-bits 28 are rotatively held in bearings 29 mounted on a horizontal boring-bit carriage 30 and they are operated through the medium of bevel gears 31 by means of a rotatively mounted shaft 32 disposed at right angles to the axis of the bits and parallel with the bit carriage and driven by a pulley 33 which is belted with any suitable source of motive power. The said boring-bit carriage 30 is reciprocatiyely mounted on the frame 1, so that all of the series of bits 28 may be fed into the cross-arm 7 simultaneously. Reciprocation of the bit carriage 30 is secured by means of levers 34 pivotally attached to the frame legs 2 at 35 and connected with the carriage by means of links 36 pivotally carried by the levers 34 at 37 and pivotally attached to the carriage at 38 Two cams 38 are mounted on a shaft 39 rotatively held in hearings in the main frame legs 2 and are adapted to reciprocate the horizontally disposed slide bars 40 in bearings 41 through the medium of pins 42 which engage cam grooves 43 and also carry connecting rods 44 pivotally attached to the levers 34 at 45. A. series of vertical boring bits 46 are mounted on spindles 49 rotatively held in bearings 47 mounted on a horizontal bit-frame 48 which is mounted on brackets 52 attached to frame 1. A horizontally disposed bit feeding bar 50 is reciprocatively mounted on two upright rods 51 attached to the brackets 52 and is connected with the bit-spindles 49 by means of connecting links 53 and their spindle holding collars 54. Reciprocation of the bit-feeding bar 50 is secured through the medium of lifting rods 55 pivotally attached to bosses on bar 50 at 56 and carried by rocker-arms 57 mounted on a transversely disposed shaft 58 carried in hearings in the brackets 52 and provided with an operating lever 59 which is connected with a lever 60 on a shaft 61 by means of a link 62. The shaft 61 is rotatively mounted in hearings in brackets 52 and is actuated by means of a rocker arm 63 connected with the horizontal bit-carriage 30 by a connecting link 64. The bit-spindles 49 are belt driven by a horizontally disposed rotatively mounted shaft 65 carried in bearings on the brackets 52 and driven by any suitable motive power. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the cams 24: and 38 have their respective grooves 27 and 43 cut so as to properly time the operation of the clamps and boring bits. It will be seen that after the cross arm has been set in place it must be held rigidly against the stops and the table bymeans of the clamps until after the boring bits have performed their operations after which the cross arm is released and removed from the machine. In order to properly time the relative movements of the clamp actuating'cam and the bit-actuating cam, a spur gear 66 is mounted on shaft 39 so as to mesh with the spur gear 25. A cam driving shaft 67 is rotatively mounted at one end in a bearing 68 attached to a leg 2 and at its other end in an eccentric bushing 69, shown in detail in Fig. 6, held in a bearing 70 and carrying an operating lever 71 with a foot piece 72. I operative contact with a friction wheel 75 which is mounted on an intermediate shaft 76 rotatively held in hearings on the maclamping members adapted to be operated at right angles to each other upon and over said table, two boring-bit carriages adapted to be moved, respectively, in vertical and horizontal directions over said table, boring bits in said carriages, means for driving said boring bits, means for automatically operating said clamping members, and means for automatically moving said boring-bit carriages to and from their operating positions over said table, substantially as described.
A cross-arm boring machine comprising an operating table provided with stops at one side thereof, two clamping members, one operating in a horizontal direction toward and from said stops and the other operating in a vertical direction above said table, means for automatically moving said clamping members together against and upon a crossarm placed upon said table and against said stops, two boring-bit carriages operating to and from the cross-arm upon said table, one movable in a horizontal direction and the other movable in a vertical direction, and both provided with boring bits with means for driving said boring bits, and means timed with the operation of said clamping members for automatically moving said boring-bit carriages toward and from said crossarm, at right angles to each other, whereby to bore said cross-arm from two directions,
