To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. ALEX- ANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skiving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to that class of skim ing machines in which a feed roll and yielding presser foot cooperate in feeding and guiding the work to the skiving knife.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of presser foot and guide which will operate to press the work firmly and uniformly against the periphery of the feed roll and guide it in a uniformly reliable manner against the knife edge.
To this end the invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and referred to in the claims.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection. of the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the construction illustrated therein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of so much of a leather skiving machine as is necessary to illustrate the application of the present invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line 4.--1, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 6-6, Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 5 5, Fig. 3; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 77, Fig. 3.
In the drawings the invention is shown as applied to the well-known Amazeen skiving machine. In this machine the work is fed against the edge of a disk knife 2 by a work supporting feed wheel 4 provided with a frusto-conical portion cooperating with the knife edge in determining the angle of the skiving, and with a cylindrical outer end of reduced diameter which cooperates with a feed disk 6 in advancing the work. The angle of the skiving is determined by the relative position of the frusto-conical portion of the feed roll and the knife, and 1t is important to the accurate skiving of the edge of the work that the work be pressed firmly and uniformly against the periphery of this portion of the feed roll; In the construction shown the edge of the work acted upon by the knife is pressed agamst the periphery of the feed roll directly in advance of the knife edge by a presser comprising a work engaging foot 8 the outer end of which is pivoted at 10 to the outer end of a presser foot supporting lever 12. The inner end of the foot 8 is arranged to lie close to or against the vertical face of the edge gage l4, and is provided with a stop pin 16 overlying the lever 12.
spring 18 is interposed between the presser foot and the lever 12, and tends to force the foot downward away from the lever, and to maintain the stop pin 16 in engagement with the upper surface of the lever. The lever 12 is supported by the edge gage block 20, and is mounted to turn about a pivot 22 arranged directly back of the work engaging face of the edge gage. A spring 2a is interposed between the rear end of the lever 12 and the bottom of the groove in the edge gage block within which the lever is mounted, and tends to hold the rear end of the lever against a stop pin 26 and to maintain the presser foot in normal position with relation to the periphery of the feed roll. The edge gage block is provided with a forwardly projecting finger 28, and the under surface of the block and finger are shaped to fit snugly about the periphery of the feed roll, so that crowding of the edge of the work between the edge gage and periphery of the roll is prevented. The lower face of the presser foot is inclined downwardly in the direction of the feed, so that the leading edge of the work may enter freely under the foot.
When the work enters between the face of the presser footand the feed roll, the spring 2st will yield to allow the pivoted outer end of the presser foot to rise, while the spring 18 will yield to allow the inner end of the presser foot to rise so that the foot moves vertically while both ends are pressed firmly and independently toward the feed roll. Thus a substantially uniform pressure is applied to the material throughout the portion engaged by the presser foot.
The inner end of the presser foot as it yields remains close to or against the vertical face of the edge gage, so that the extreme edge of the material is firmly held and accurately guided against the edge of the knife. In case the edge of the work has been already operated upon, or is beveled to a greater or less degree, then the lever 12 will swing about its pivot 22 as the work enters between the presser foot and feed roll, so that the outer end of the presser foot will rise to a somewhat greaterextent than the inner end to enable the presser foot to accommodate itself to the variation in the thickness of the material along the line engaged by the presser foot. In this case, therefore, as when acting upon work the thickness of which is uniform, the presser foot will act to press the material firmly and uniformly against the periphery of the feed roll throughout that portion passing between the presser foot and feed roll and throughout the width of the skiving.
It is sometimes desirable to vary the normal position of the presser foot in order that thick stock may be readily passed under the presser foot, and means is therefore providcd for varying the vertical position of the presser foot while maintaining its work engaging surface parallel to the periphery of the feed roll. In the construction shown, this means comprises a lever 30 pivoted on the edge gage block, and having its forward end arranged to underlie a small roll carried by the end of the stop pin 16 on the presser foot. The rear end of the lever is provided with a projection overlying the ear end of the presser foot carrying lever 12. The lever is also provided with lugs 32 embracing an adjusting screw 34, and arranged between the knurled head- 86 of the screw and a washer 38 which surrounds the screw. A spring 40 underlies the washer, and tends to force the rear end of the lever upward against the head .36. By screwing the adjusting screw downward the adjusting lever may be rocked on its pivot to lift the inner end of the presser foot and to depress the rear end of the presser foot carrying lever 12 and thus raise the pivoted outer end of the presser foot. The presser foot may be thus lifted bodily against the tension of the springs 18 and 24: to vary the height of its work engaging surface above the feed roll.
The edge gage block and presser foot are carried upon the rear end of a curved arm 42, the lower front end of which is provided with a lateral extension grooved to fit over a guide bar or rib 44-. The arm is clamped upon the guide rib so that it may be adjusted thereon to vary the position of the edge gage and presser foot longitudinally of the feed roll. The rib is adjustably mounted upon a supporting plate 46 so that it may be swung to vary its inclination in accordance with the inclination of the periphery of the feed roll which is being used upon the machine, and so that its vertical position may be varied to bring the edge gage into proper relation to the periphery of the feed roll. The means for securing the guide rib in position on the plate comprises a bolt 48 which passes through a vertical slot 50 in the plate, and is provided with an elongated head 52 fitted to slide vertically in a recess 54 in the rear side of the plate. The bolt passes through a hole in the guide rib 44, and is engaged by a clamping nut 56, the outer end of which is slotted for the reception of a screw-driver, and the inner end of which bears against the outer face of the guide rib. The nut 56 is in the form-of a sleeve which passes through a slot in the lower end of the curved arm 4-2, and is threaded to receive a. clamping nut 58 which engages the lower end of the arm and clamps it in adjusted position. The nut 58 may be knurled so that it may be readily loosened and tightened by the operator in adjusting the presser foot and gage along the periphery of the feed roll.
In order that the presser foot and edge gage may be readily moved out of position to give access to the knife and feed roll when desired, the supporting plate 16 is pivotally mounted at 60 upon a base plate 62, and is held in normal position upon the base plate by a knurled clamping nut 64 carried by a bolt 66 which is pivoted to the upper end of the base plate, and is arranged to swing into and out of position between lugs 68 on the upper edge of the supporting plate 46. The base plate 62 is secured in a vertical groove in the bearing 70 for the feed roll by a bolt 72. By mounting the presser foot and edge gage in the manner described, the requisite adjustments may be readily and conveniently made, and the presser foot and edge gage may be readily and conveniently moved into and out of operative relation with the feed roll and knife when desired without disturbing the adjustment of the parts.
While the invention has been shown as embodied in a machine provided with a feed roll and disk knife, it will be understood that it is not confined in its application to such machine, but may be embodied with advantage in other forms of machines. It will also be understood that the specific construction and arrangement of parts is not essential to the broader features of the invention. and may be varied and modified without departing therefrom.
Having explained the nature and object of. the invention, and specifically described one form of mechanism in which it may be embodied, what is claimed is:
l. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a presser foot having its work engaging face normally parallel to the work engaging surface of the roll, a yielding support for the outer end of the presser foot, and means for supporting its inner end to yield independently.
2. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a work support mounted in fixed relation thereto to determine the angle of the skiving, a presser foot, a lever to which the foot is pivoted, a spring between the lever and foot, and a spring supporting the lever.
3. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a work support mounted in fixed relation thereto to determine the angle of the skiving, a presser foot, a lever to which the outer end of thepresser foot is pivoted, a spring for holding the foot in position on the lever, an edge gage, a pivot for the lever back of the edge gage, and a spring supporting the lever.
l. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage, a spring supported carrier lever pivoted at the rear of the edge gage, a presser foot having its outer end pivoted to the carrier lever and its inner end arranged close to the vertical face of the edge gage, and a spring arranged to press the inner end of the foot toward the feed roll.
5. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage block, a spring supported carrier on the block, a presser foot pivoted to the carrier and having its inner end close to the vertical face of the edge gage, and a, spring arranged to press the inner end of the foot toward the feed roll.
6. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage block, a lever pivoted on the block, a presser foot having its outer end pivoted to the lever, a spring between the lever and foot, and a spring supporting the rear end of the lever.
7. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage, a spring supported lever pivoted at the rear of the edge gage, a presser foot pivoted on the lever, a spring between the lever and foot, and means for varying the height of the foot and maintaining its work engaging surface parallel with the work engaging surface of the roll.
8. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage, a spring supported lever pivoted at the rear of the edge gage, a presser foot pivoted on the lever, a spring between the lever and foot, and an adjusting lever engaging the foot and lever to vary the height of the foot.
9. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage, a spring supported lever pivoted at the rear of the edge gage, a presser foot pivoted on the lever, a spring between the lever and the foot, an adjusting lever engaging the foot and lever, and an adjusting screw for operating the adjusting lever.
10. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage block having a vertical guiding face, a lever pivoted in a groove in the block and projecting over the feed roll, a presser foot pivoted to the outer end of the lever and having its sides embracing the lever and its inner end close to the vertical face of the gage block, a spring between the lever and foot, and a spring supported in the rear end of the lever.
11. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a presser foot and edge gage, a supporting arm therefor, a guide rib on which the arm is adjustably secured, and a support on which the rib is angularly adjustable.
12. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a presser foot and edge gage, a supporting arm therefor, a guide rib on which the arm is adjustably secured, and a support on which the rib is vertically and angularly adjustable.
13. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a presser foot and edge gage, and a support mounted to swing the presser foot and gage into or out of operative relation to the feed roll and knife.
14. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a presser foot and edge gage, an adjustable supporting arm therefor, a support on which the arm is adjusted, mounted to swing the presser foot and gage into or out of operative relation to the feed roll and knife, and means for securing the support in normal position.
15. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, a presser foot and edge gage, a supporting arm therefor having a groove and slot, a guide rib engaged by the groove, a supporting plate, a bolt passing through the, plate and rib, a binding sleeve passing through the slot in the arm and engaging the rib, and a binding nut threaded on the sleeve and engaging the arm.
16. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a knife, a feed roll, an edge gage, a spring supported lever pivoted at the rear of the edge gage, a presser foot pivoted on the lever, and a spring for forcing the inner end of the foot toward the feed roll.
