Application led September 1t, 1913. Serial No. 790,523.
ToV all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, RoBERT-McMULLANf a subject of the `King of Great Britain, and residing at 99 South Terrace, Fremantle, Western Australia, Commonwealth oi" Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llrrigator-Sprinklers, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to those sprinklers which rotate owing to the force of the escaping water and an important result is attained by this construction in that the volume of water issuing from the water exit at any point is such that there is neither overwatering or underwatering of` any .portion of the area comprised within the peripheral working line, or in' other words,
there is uniform distribution of waterv within the area sprinkled by thel rotatingA sprays. j
The invention essentially resides also in,l the construction and -assemblage of the sprinkler with its pivot and water seal.`
. The construction and operation of Ithe invention will 1now be described with the aidl of the attached drawings in which Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of 4a sprinkler and nipple made according to this invention and lFig. 2 is atop plan' of the nipple proper.
Referringyto said'drawings the nipple a is secured by threads in the elbow b' on the yend of the revolving arm o. The exit end d of the nipple is of a semicircular or a semispherical Aform and across the top of such rounded end d' is :lformed a wedge or l! shaped slot or 4openlng as e (see Fig. 2).
` v Thisgraduated slot. e ofthe form shown is used with its large end f toward the outer edge of the orbit or circle of the rotating irrigator` o in order to allow the greatest volume of water to be greater peripheral area served by the irrigator in its rotation. 4 I
The slot e in vertical section follows the the otherwise closed nipplea while its other or horizontal shape is that of a l! or graduated slot as above described. The nipple when in its working position is perpendicular to the revolving and horizontalarm c;
These nipples o are removably secured by threads in the elbow b' and nected to the arms c so as to cause the rota tion ot said arms by reason of the force of .whole appliance rides or rotates so distributed over the speed of rotation of may be varied, brace rods extending from the upper extremity ofA said mast thereby con- V the exitl water as shown by they arrows g.
These arms are secured by threads in theV central case or hub j having the mast head 7c threaded thereinto as shown while by the rods m said armsare stayed or guyed. The central fixed pipe n which acts as the water feed pipe has the openings nl through which the water escapes into the hub j and therethroughto the arms c as indicated by the arrows. This fixed pipe is formed with the closed top having the pin p upon which the giving ease of movement and a minimum o friction. By means of the mast head c the tension is effected and when overpressure of water occurs the sprinkler may be braked Vto a reducedspeed. The hub at its bottom is provided with a packing comprising a screvi7 threaded gland r and a washer s coninedbetween an annular shoulder t on the pipe rtf-and the lower end of the hub. lFurther by the mast head adjustment c the washer s'can be made suiciently tight to preventthe escape of water and any upwardv displacement of the sprinkler when rotating. at ll claim as my invention and desire to secure byllietters Patent is sponding bearing recess 1n. its -lower endv adapted toy receive said bearinglpin'ot1 the supply pipe and being rection of the axis of the hub, whereby the said hub an'd nozzles and secured to said nozzles adjacent theirV free ends\,"and a water-tight gland between the lower end of thehub andV said pipe, said gland preventing a slidable movement of the hub with respect to the pipe.
2.,An irrigating sprinklercomprising a hollow hub formlng a water distributing chamber, discharge nozzles projecting from said hub, a supply pipe having its upper end projecting into said hub, a supporting Harige the upper end of said,
adjustable in the dilill@ projecting from said supply pipe adjacent adjustable bearing mounted between the hub its upper end, a packing gland adapted to and the upper end of said pipe.
surroundy said pipe below and engage with In testimony whereof I have hereunto set said supporting iange and to be threaded on my hand in presence of two subscribing 5 the ylower end of the hub, said gland being witnesses.
formed with a mortise adapted to receive' said supporting flange, a Washer surround- I' ROBERT MCMULLAN' ing said pipe and interposed between said Witnesses: packing gland and the lower end of the hub RICHARD SPARROW,
le and verlyingsaid supporting ange and an' FREDERICK CHARLES WAITHAM.
