Be it known that I, RosA D. HATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Telephones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will .enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination telephones and the object in view is to combine in one instrument both the transmitter and the receiver.

The invention comprise: various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My lnvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a side elevation of a combination telephone made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View looking at the transmitter and horn. Fig 3 is a central sectional view showin the switch mechanism for connecting tli e telephone and throwing the same out of commission, and Fig. l is a sectional view on line %4 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a receiver of the usual construction of a telephone, and B is a horn which is connected thereto in any suitable manner, and C designate supporting wires which are fastened to the shank portion of the horn and which support the transmitter D which is positioned centrally in front of the horn and adjacent to the end thereof. The trans mitter is connected to th'e telephone through the medium of the wires E, and F designates a hood which is preferably fastened to the horn and afl'ords means of privacy to the user of the telephone.

In order to regulate the size of the opening through the constricted portion of the horn, I provide an iris shutter, designated in the drawingsby letter I", which has a circumfeipntial milled portion I rotatable in the contracted portion I, as shown clearly in the drawings. By this provision of said iris shutter, the tone of the sound may be regulated.

The switch mechanism for throwing on the currents consists of the terminals K and N, the former stationary and the latter yielding, and O is a switch member which is pivotallymounted on the pin R and has two buttons, designated respectively by letters T and S, upon arms of said members. one of which buttons is adapted to be'pushed upon for the purpose of closing the circuit while the other breaks 'the circuit. In operation, when it is desired to turn on the telephone, the operator presses down upon the button S, closing the circuit and which performs the same function that the lifting of the ordinary receiver from the Y receiverholder upon telephones. The operator standing in front of the transmitter may talk intothe same and, owing to the provision of the horn, the incoming message may be distinctly heard without the necessity of the usual receiver, the hood about the horn serving to direct the vibrations to the ears ot the person receiving the message and at the same time prevent the message being heard at a distance from the telephone.

By the provision of an apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it'will be noted that the telephone apparatus is greatly simplified, the necessity of holding of the receiver to the ear by' one hand being dispensed with as the lips of the person using the telephone may be positioned adjacent thereto and the tone of the voice transmitted will. through the medium of the horn he :nnpiified.
