FRANK P..KOBERT, 0F MILLDALE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL ELECTRIC RIVETER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
ELECTRIC RIVETING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Original application filed May 25, 1915, Serial No. 30,297. Divided and this application filed September 9,
1915. Serial No. 49,667.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK P. KoBER'r, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Milldale, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Riveting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in electric riveting and especially to apparatus of this class used for riveting two plates or articles together, and the object thereof is to provide an improved apparatus of this class which is simple in construction and convenient of operation, and which may be easily manipulated by anyone having a knowledge of this class of devices; a further object being to provide an apparatus of the class specified which involves the principles, construction and operation of an ordinary power press provided with a vertically movable plunger; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an apparatus of the class specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
This application is av division of a prior application filed by me May 25th, 1915, Serial No. 30,297, and the invention forming the basis of this application is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the main framework of a. power press and involving my invention; and, Fig. 2 a trans verse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing, I have shown at a part of the framework of an ordinary power press having a vertically movable plunger a which is operated in the usual manner, but the operative mechanism of which is not shown.
The press frame a is provided with a table 6 mounted on a support 6 from which it is insulated as shown at 1 and on which the plates or articles 0 to be riveted together are placed. I also provide electrode arm which is pivoted at (Z to a pin d rotatably mounted in a sleeve (Z secured in the table 6 and from which it is insulated as shown at (Zf, and the rear end of the arm (Z is provlded with a weight (5 and the front end thereof with an insulating handle (Z and the normal or inoperative position of the arm (Z is that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2, while the operative position of said arm is shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
A conductor 6 is connected with the arm (Z and another conductor 0 is connected with the table I), and the conductors e and e are connected, in practice, with an electrical transformer, not shown, but in the usual manner.
The plates or articles 0 to be riveted together are placed on the table 7) as shown in Fig. 1, and a rivet f is passed upwardly through said plates or articles and provided with a head f which fits in a correspond ing recess in the top of the table.
In the operation of this device the arm (Z is manipulated by hand, said arm, in order to heat the rivet, being swung into the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and then depressed onto the end of said rivet, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. This operation, as will be understood, completes the circuit through the rivet g and heats said rivet, after which the arm is swung into the inoperative position, and the plunger (4 operates, or is operated, to rivet the end of said rivet or form a head thereon.
It will be understood, of course, that the plunger a is under the control of the operator and is operated in the same manner as in other machines of this class, or in other power presses, and with my improvement, the operation of the electrode arm (Z is under the personal control of the operator of the machine at all times, and the personal equation becomes the chief element in the operation of said machine; and while I have shown and described the construction and the details thereof which I prefer, my invention is not limited thereto, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the connection of the electrode arm d with the table I) will enable said arm to be moved vertically and also horizontally and any suitable coupling or connection of this class may be provided.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A machine for riveting two articles together, comprising a frame provided with a table on which said articles are placed, said machine being also provided with a vertically movable plunger, and an electrode arm mounted in connection with said table and capable of vertical and horizontal movement, said arm forming part of an open electric circuit which is closed when said arm is brought in connection with a rivet passed upwardly through said articles.
2. A machine for riveting two plates or articles together, comprising a frame provided. with a table on which said plates or articles are placed, said table being provided with a recess to receive the head of a rivet which passes upwardly through said plates or articles, said machine being also provided with a vertically movable plunger, an electrode arm mounted on said table and capable of vertical and horizontal movement whereby it is adapted to be swung into connection with the end of said rivet, and means for holding said arm in a raised position when not in use.
3. A machine for riveting two plates or articles together, comprising a frame provided with a table on which said plates or articles are placed, said table being provided with a recess to receive the head of a rivet which passes upwardly through said plates or articles, said machine being also provided with a vertically movable plunger,
and an electrode arm pivotally mounted on said table and capable of vertical and hori zontal movement whereby it is adapted to be swung into connection with the end of said rivet.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 7th day of September, 1915.
FRANK P. KOBERT.
