CASING-ELEVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, Encan E. Gnnvr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, iu the county of Allegheny and State' of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casing-lllevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.v
My invention relates to the construction of that class of-devices commonly termed casing elevators, which are used in handling tubing and casing in boring oil or Artesian wells.
The most common form of this class of devices is that wherein the elevator is comprised of two similar parts having hinged connection, and provided with two bails for engagement with thehook of the hoist, one of which bails usually encompasses and holds the parts in fixed relation. This'class of casing elevators is objectionable in that, in order to apply the elevator to the casing to be handled, it becomes necessary to detach the bails from the elevator-hook of the hoist, which necessitates the manipulating of the elevator without the aid of the hoist and adds to the labor and difficulties of the To overcome these objections there have been vdevised what are commonly termed single bail, gate elevators, that is to say, elevators wherein a single bail only is used, the bail being pivoted on one member of the elevator to which member the other or movable member or gate of the elevator is also pivoted, and a lock is provided to maintain the proper relation of the elevator members when the elevator is loaded. In utilizing this latter class of casing elevators, the bail does not have to be removed from the hoist hook, and consequently in manipulating the elevator and introducing the casing thereinto the operator is largely relieved of the weight of the elevator, and

To this end my invention, generally stated, involves a single bail elevator having a plurality of interlocking gates or doors, the body member of the elevator on which the bail is pivoted being provided with trunnions so located that the center line of the trunnions corresponds with the center line of the elevator so that the elevator will tend to maintain the vertical position when the gates are closed, but will assume an angle to the line of the bail when the gates are open, whereby the introduction of the casing is facilitated and in hoisting, the load on the gates or doors is minimized.
A second feature of my invention involves the combination with a single bail plural gate elevator, of a latch coacting with the bail and elevator to maintain thenormal relation of bail and elevator during the hoisting operation.
A third feature of my invention involves the combination with a single bail, plural gate elevator, of a plurality of vertically and oppositely operating locks or latches for securing the gates whereby the stresses on the locks are uniformly distributed.
There are other minor features of invention involving particular combinations of elementsJ and particular features of elemental construction, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

Having thus described my invention. what I claim and desire to seeurey by Letters Patent is:
