Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1s, 1916.
' Application filed May 7, 1913. Serial No. 766,051.
To allwlwm z't may concern:
Be it known that LENOCH OHNSTRAND, of Syracuse, in thecounty of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement lin Furniture,
which improvement is' fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings. A
The present invention relates to furniture and more particularly to the manner of fastening the legs of furniture to the bodies, an object of this invention being'to provide a construction whiclr'will permit the furniture legs to be made from sheet metal.
To those and other ends Athe invention consistsin certain parts andl combinations of parts all-of which will be hereinafter described, the'novel features being pointed out in the appendediclaims.
`In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section through a table'constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through one ofthe legs and the parts to which it is secured; Fig. 3 is a section on the line L -a, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line b-b, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the 'strengthening member.V
The invention is illustrated in a sheet metal table but it is apparent that itis not limited to this use. The table embodies, as wouldA any7 article of furniture, a body portion which, in this instance, comprises a top 1, of any suitable construction, and a rectan-l gular fra'me secured to the top, such frame,
and having inwardly-turned flanges 2 along u its upper edge riveted at 3 to .the top, the
lower edge of each side piece 4 of said frame having an inwardly-turned flange 5 formed with an upwardly-turned iiange 6 atits outer' edge.
The legs are all the sameso a description of one will be suilicient for all. Each may be formed of sheet metal into tubular or hollow form in rectangular cross section, tapering from its upper to its lower-end. The upper end of eachleg is cut away to provide a recess or pocket for receiving one corner ofthe rectangular frame of the body. When the frame is in position, it does not fill up the upper ends of the legs by abutting the interior faces of said legs, as it is A desired that the legs shall project out beulate a wooden construction, the edges of the cut-away portion' being the portions.
necting the side'pieces of the rectangular l framewith the inner faceV of the leg oppo-I site sald recess. No brod claim is made to this feature in this application as the sub- ]ect matter thereof is claimed in my applicatio'nfor Patent #731,534 filed on the 15th day of November, 1912. This application being another vembodiment of the invention claimed in my application aforesaid. In
thisl instance, there is provided a Yfilling piece for the upper end of the, leg, this filling piece being in one rigid and preferably integral structure and conforming generallyto the space between the side pieces of the ofsaid filling piece projecting downwardly into the leg below the recessed portion Vin order to obtain bearing below said recessed portion, thus giving great strength to the structure. IAs illustrated. this filling piece embodies a basel member 9 serving as a rest or support for the underside of the side pieces 4 and having extensions 10 at three corners thereof to give suilicient Vbearing below the recess of the leg. Projecting up- 'bodyand the inner faces of the leg, a portionA wardly from the .base 9 is a frame of an-` gular construction cut away at 11 to lighten the construction of the same and ribbed at 12, alongits two sides, corner and upper edge toY abut the inner face of the leg oppo- 'site the recess vand particularly in the corners thereof. The side pieces are preferably bolted to this filler near their lower edges as at 13, while the upper end of the leg and the filler lie between the side pieces and an angle piecel or shoulder-14e secured to the under side of the top in' spaced relation to the outer face of the side pieces. Thisfiller and a foot piece 15, fitted in the 4lower end of the hollow leg 8, are tied together by a tie rod l@ which is bent into a hook 17 interlocked at one end with a plate 18 abutting an internal shoulder 19 within the hollow foot piece la?, its other end being' passed through an opening $30 in the base member 9 and engaged by n. ynut 21. Itis apparent that by tying both the filler and the footy piece together, the iillerV is held tightly to the internal walls of the leg while the shoulder' 2Q surrounding the foot piece is held in firm engagement with the lower end of the leg.
Furniture constructed in accordance with this invention has a very strong and durable sheet metal leg'.I and the leg has the appeal ance of a. wooden structure, yet it is much stronger than the latter.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In furniture, the combination with a. hollow sheet metal leg having a recess at its upper end, of a rigid frame fitted in said leg and having an abutment with the inner wall of the latter below the recess and al utment with said inner wall opposite the re cess'. said frame having a seat. and a body having anglilarly arranged outer faces abutting the frame and. the lower portions resting upon said seat.
2. In furniture, the combination with a hollow metal leg having a recess at its upper end, of a rigid frame embodying a base fitting in said leg below the recess and a portion projecting upwardly from the base and abutting the inner wall of the legopposite the recess, and a body resting upon the base andihaving angularly arranged. outer faces abutting the upwardly projecting portion.
3. In furniture, a sheet metal leg of reetangular cross section having one'corner recessed at its upper end, a frame having;r a portion fitting within the leg below the recess and an angular portion abutting the inner face of the leg opposite the recess and a body resting upon the portion of the frame below the recess and having angnlarly ar vranged outer faces abutting the angular portion of the frame above the reces.
4. In furniture, the combination with a the under faces of the nir/deaf;
furniture body having a' pair of angularly arranged sides, of a hollow'sheet metal leg for supporting said body, said leg being recessed at its upper end and having the corner formed by the two side pieces arranged in said recess, and a filling piece arranged between the outer faces of the side pieces and the inner wall of the'hollow leg, said filling piece having abutment with the inner all of the leg below the recess with the inner wall of the leg above the recess` with side pieces and with theoiiter faces of said side pieces.
7i. In 'furniturer` the combination with a forniture body having a pair of singularly wronged side pieces, of a hollow sheet metal egf for supporting said body, said leg bein recessed at-its upper end and having the corner formed by the side pieces fitted in` the recess, and a filling piece having a base fitl cess and a portion projecting upwardly from first named portion and abutting the inner face of the leg opposite the recess7 a rod secured at one end to the filling and strengthening piece, and means for anchoring the other end of the .rod to the leg below the said filling and strengthening piece.
