Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Speeication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,992, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom-'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY W. DAVIS, of Portland, in Multnomah county, in the State of Oregon, have invented an Improved Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification.
The drawing represents a vertical section through the center ofthe coupling, A and B being called bumpers My invention relates to that kind or" coupling known as a lun-colliding, and opening and closing the pin ofthe same for the purposes herein specified. rlhis coupling` consists, essentially, ofthe four parts or pieces G, K, H, and E.
The operation of the device is as follows: The rear attachment A is provided with a spiral spring, E, which operates against the link F. The link F, being thrust against the pin C, is for a time held in check thereby, until the cani H is pushed under the incline on the piece G, Which raises it to the position shown by the dotted lines at L. In the piece G the pin O is iixed. As the piece G rises it carries the pin C, and as soon as the pin is raised the spiral spring E thrusts the link F under and beyond the pin C; and as soon as the forward bumper B advances the pin C falls in place inside the link F. For the purpose of unconpling, when there is a strain on the pin C, the bent lever K is used. The short end is bent in the form of an eccentric centered on a pin, J, in the piece G; and the piece G is held in place by the pins C and I rising vertically on pin I.
From the above it will be seen that the coupling is self-acting and is easily nncoupled by the lifting ofthe lever K, be the strain. great or small; and the hooking direction ofthe pin C auginents the security against uncoupling, which cannot be done without raising the lever K.
I claim as my invention- The draw-head A provided with the cam H, spring E, and link F, in combination with drawhead B provided with piece G, lever K, and pin C, substantially as described.
PERRY W. DAVIS.
