Specification of Letters l atent. i
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.
Application filed April 13, 1914. Serial NO. 831,593.
To all 'wlw'm'z't may concern j Be it known that 1, JOHN SHARP, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and res1- dent of 26 Borden street, in the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have 1nventecl certain new and useful Improvements in Gangways for Car-Ferries and. the like, of which the following is a specifica tion. The invention relates to improvements in a gangway for car ferries and the like as described in the present specification and illustrated. in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby a gateway is provided on its outer side with rails corresponding to the rails on the floor of the ferry and is adapted to be thrown backwardly on said floor, its rails thus forming a continuity of the track line on said floor.
The objects of the invention are to produce a device which will act as a barrier against the inrush of water consequent upon the turning of the ferry and which can be readily converted into a part of the trackway and generally to simplify the construction of ferries and the like.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the gate thrown back and forming part of the track line. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the structure. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the gate in the raised position.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the ferry having the tapered end 2 having cut therein the opening 3 adapted to be engaged by a suitable platform from the dock, said platform having attached thereto anchors adapted to engage the dogs 4 on the ferry, the platform fitting snugly into the opening 3 preventing any lateral movement of the ferry while the anchors prevent any movement to or away from the dock.
5 is the deck of the ferry being composed of overlapping metal plates 6 as customary and having attached thereto to the chairs 7 such as are used ordinarily in railway construction and adapted to carry the rails 8.
9 is a gate secured to the ferry by the hinges 10 and 11 and being composed of a lower layer of overlapping metal plates 12 similar to the plates 6 and an upper facing of metal 13, the twolayers'being spaced by the wooden blocks 14: the whole being of a thickness to correspond with the height of the chairs 7.
15 are rails on the gate 9 corresponding to the rails 8 on the floor 5.
16 are rods at each end of the gate having their lower ends pivotally secured in the sockets 17 a short distancebehind the gate 9, and the externally threaded upper ends 18 adapted to be engagedby a collar 19, said collar having its lower end 20 correspondingly threaded internally, the upper end 21 of said collar having the oppositely running thread adapted to engage the rods 22, the said collar owing to its oppositely threaded ends facilitating the shortening or lengthening of said braces as when the collar is turned one way it draws the rods 22 toward the rod 16 and when'turned in the opposite direction it forces the rods 22 away from the rods 16.
23 is a portable wooden beam adapted to abut the inner side of the gate when in the up position and having therein the sockets 24 adapted to engage the ends of the rods 22, the said rods acting as a brace to keep the gate in the raised position.
25 is a cable attached to the gate at its upper end and running backwardly over suitable pulleys 26 to a winding drum, the said cable and drum being for the purpose of raising or lowering the gate.
27 is a weight attached to the cable 25 to further facilitate the raising of the gate.
In the operation of this invention when it is desired to load the ferry with cars the collar 19 is turned drawing the rods 22 toward-the rods 16 and away from their sockets 24, the braces are thrown backwardly on the deck and the portable beam 23 is thrown to one side, the drum is next unwound allowing the gate 9 to fall inwardly, the inner ends of the rails on the gate abutting the ends of the rails 8 on the deck, the cars are then run on to the ferry and the gate again raised to its vertical position by means of the drum and weight, the beam 23 is placed against the said gate and the braces placed in position as explained, thus closing in the deck and preventing any inflow of water and also p said deck and having correspondingrailson the outer side and adapted to swing in- Wardlyand means-for raising said gate;
2; In a gangWay for car ferries, a deck structure having plating and rails forming tracks on said plating, a gate hinged at its lower, end and having rails on the outer .fac'e thereof meeting the aforesaid rails and a cable and Weight with pulleys therefor for raising said gatel T v 3. In a gangvvay for car ferries, a deck structure having plating tracks on said plating, a gatehaving corresponding plating and an inner plating distanced from the outer plating and rails on the l atter brought toa having deck plating,
-- means for raising said and rails forming level of the deck rails by said distancing, and means for raismg said gate.
l. Ina gangway for car ferries, a deck structure having rails supported by chairs and formingitracks, agate having a double Wall separated by distance pieces and rails on the outer wall-meeting the aforesaid rails, gate, and means for buttre'ssing said gate in its upper position. 5, In, a gangway for car ferries, a deck structure having rails secured thereon, and, g hinged. tq the d ck }.w*
forming tracks, v v I i and havlng correspondlng ra ls on theouter side, means for ralsing said gate, a buttress 0n the inner side anda strut' adjustable as to length and bracing said buttress in position.
