Description

NITED s'r 'rEs PATENT onnion.
' ALAN T. LOCKARD, SUFFERN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN BRAKE SHOE & EOUHDRY COMPANY, OF MAHWAH, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALAN T.'LOCKARD, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Sufl'ern, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have made and invented certain. new and useful Improves mentsin Reinforcing-Backs for Brake- Shoes, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to reinforcingbacks Y for brake shoes, andmore particularly to that style or type of back wherein the central portion is outwardly looped, so-as to forin anv integral lug.
The body of a brake shoe is liable to become broken and fractured during service, and particularly at the central portion thereof, and in those instances where a reinforcing back is used which is formed with an outwardly looped integral lug, the back is liable to spread and the lug to open'up, and it is therefore an object of the present invention to brace the lug portion of the back against opening up and spreading, the means employed. being in nowise dependent upon the cast metal. body of the shoe, so that the reinforcing back will remain intact, regardless of the extent to which the 'body of the shoe may become fractured and broken.
A further object is to accomplish the afore-mentioned ends in a simple and expeditious manner, wherein the material re- .moved from the sides of the lug for the formation of the keyway openings is utilized to hold the lug against spreading, andresults in the formation. of a continuous reinforcing back.
Other objects and advantages Will appear as the description proceeds, wherein it is to be understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in plan of the blank from which my improved reinforcing back is formed; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the completed back; Fig 3 is a view in longitudinal vertical section of a brake shoe having my improved back incorporated therein; Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 4% of Fig. 3: and Fig. 5

is a fragmental view in perspective of my lmproved reinforcing back, with one portion of the lug cut away so as to disclose the interlocking connection between the integral t1e plates Which project across the open extremity of the lug.
Referring specifically to Fig.1, the blank 10 is provided at its central and"l-ug-fonm ing portion 11 with the oppositely-extending- U-shape slits 12. These slits are spaced symmetrically about the center of the blank and define spaced tongues 13, having interlocking confronting ends 14. The blank, as above outlined, is subj ected to the action of suitable forming-dies, and the central portion 11 thereof is outwardly looped to form the integral lug 15. At the same time the central portion 11 is outwardly looped, the tongues 13 are bent into the general plane of the back,'forming tie plates 16, the interlocking ends 14 of which are brought into engagement, defining a continuous back. The downward bending of the tongues 13 results in the formation of suitable keyway openings 17 in the sides of the lug, allowing the attaching key to be passed therethrough and the brake shoe to be secured to a brake head.
The reinforcing back is placed within a suitable mold and the wearing body 18 of the shoe is cast therearound, the metal flowin up through suitable openings 19 provi ed in the tie plates. The exact formation of the interlocking ends of the tie plates may be varied, and has been illustrated in the present drawing as being of dovetail shape to indicate one form of connection.
'What I claim is 1. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing back with a centrally formed lug, tie plates projecting beneath .said lug and provided with interlocking ends.
2. A reinforcing back for brake shoes provided with a looped integral lug, tie plates cut fromthe sides of said lug and extending across the base of said lug, said tie plates provided with interlocking ends.
3. A reinforcing back for brake shoes with a looped integral lug, tie plates formed integral with the base portion of said lug, projecting across the open extremity thereof, and provided with interlocking ends.
4. A reinforcing back for brake shoes with a looped lug, tie plates formed integral with the base portions of said lug, projecting across the open extremity there- I of, and disposed in the general plane of the back, said tie plates proyided' with interlocking ends.
5. A reinforcing back for brake shoes with a looped lug, and tie plates projecting across the open extremity of said lug and disposed in the general plane of the back and proyided with connected ends.
6. A-reinforcing back for brake shoes with a looped lug, and tie plates formed from the sides of said lug, defining keyway openings therein, said tie plates projecting across the open extremity of said lug and providedwith connected ends.
7. A reinforcing back for brake shoes with a looped lug, and tie plates formed openings therein, said tie plates projecting across the open extremity of said lug and.
from the sides of said lug, defining keyway provided with interlocking ends.
8. A reinforcing back for. brake shoes with a looped lug, a tie plate projecting across the open extremity of said lug and formed from the sides thereof, defining keyway openings in said lug, the said tie 'plate disposed'in thegeneral plane of the back and having its ends formed integral with the basesof said lug.
9. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing back with a centrally formed lug, tie plates with interlocking ends projecting across the open extremity of said lug, .and abody of wearing metal cast. upon said reinforcing back.
10. A brake shoe comprisin'g'a reinforcing'back with a centrally formed lug, tie plates with interlocking ends projecting across the open extremityof said lug,';a nd a body of wearing metalcast upon said reinforcing back, the cast metal-0f thebody embedding the interlocking ends of the tie plates therein.-
