Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1%16.
Application filed February 6, 1915. Serial No. 6,40%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. ZAHNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark Ohio, have invented a new and useful Door- Gase Fastenenof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening'devices for attaching sheet metal cases and the like and in which no screws orv bolts will be visible.
Another object is to provide a fastener of the character referred to in which a vertical and horizontal adjustment of the door case may be made before the structure is permanently attached. 7
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the s irit or sacrificing any of the'advantages of invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of a door case, showing the fastener attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. '3 is a fragmentary View of the inner face of the buck to which the door case is attached. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the slotted bracket which forms a part of the fastener. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the bolt used in the fastener. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the split nut which engages the bolt. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the reverse side of the nut.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Referring more specifically to the construction illustrated in the accompanying and State of the form, proportions, size.
the
drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of the buck to which the door case is attached.
The numeral 2 indicates the door jamb and the numeral 3 the outer frame of the door case. The slotted bracket 4: which is provided with a centrally located horizontally, disposed oflf-set portion 5 in which is.
located a longitudinal slot 6, is attached to the frame 3 as hereinafter described- A plurality of the brackets such as are indicated tervals around the frame 3, the brackets being spot-welded to the frame.
Located through the slot 6 of each bracket is a soft iron bolt 7, the head 8 of which is located within the ofi-set portion 5 of the bracket, the bolt being slidably mounted within the slot 6. A. split nut 9 is carried upon the outer screw threaded extremity 10 of each bolt, the nut being provided with an annular groove 11, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The nut 9 is split longitudinally throughout its entire length as indicated at 12 and diametrically opposite thereto, tremity 13 of the nut is split as indicated at 1 1. For a purpose hereinafter described these nuts are made of case hardened steel or similar material.
Located at intervals around the buck 1 is a pluralityof key hole slots each of which consists of an enlarged aperture 15 and a vertically disposed slot 16 communicating therewith, each of said key hole slots being adapted to register with one of the nuts 9 carried upon the bolts"?, when the frame 3 is placedin position to be attached to the buck. The frame 3 is raised into position adjacent the buck 1, the nuts 9 upon the bolts 7 being passed through the enlarged apertures 15 of the key hole slots, the frame then being lowered slightly, the groove 11 of each nut engaging the vertical slot 16 of the adjacent key hole slot. Sufficient vertical adjustment of the door frame is possible by means of the vertical slots 16- and suiiicient horizontal adjustment thereof by means of the slots 6 in the brackets 4. When the frame has been properly adjusted and is ready for permanent attachment it is only necessary to tap the frame at the point Where each of the bolt heads 8 contacts therewith. The nuts being held stationary within the slots 16, the bolts will bedriven by the numeral 4.- are attached at inthe forward conical exthrough the nuts and owing to the fact that the nuts are split they will open allowing the bolts to pass over the internal threads thereof and when the frame has been brought tightly against the buck it will be permanently held there, the internal threaded portion of each nut biting into the soft iron bolt and holding the same-against displacement.
Thus it will be seen that by the construction herein described and illustrated a fastener is provided for attaching sheet metal door cases and the like in which a vertical and a longitudinal adjustment of the door case may be made before it is permanently secured and in which no bolts or screws are visible upon the finished structure and which will securely hold the door case against displacement.
bracket and extending through "the slot therein,
. slot,
'gests, without departing located in the slot Although the drawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I- ha"e contemplated embodying my invention and a nut carried upon the extremity of said bolt, said nut being adapted to be in said buck. v
