NUT-MIAKING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \ViLLiAM L. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester. in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Making Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to metal working machines, and with regard to certain more specific features thereof to machines for the production of nuts or nut blanks.
This invention has for one of its objects the provision of a practical automatic apparatus for the very rapid production of nut blanks.
It is another obiect of the invention to provide an apparatus of the character de scribed which will effectively operate to transform a stock bar into perforated and crowned nut blanks.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple mechanism whereby the stock bar may be fed to certain operating means which transform the stock bar into nut blanks.
Another object of the invention is to minimize the amount of shock and strain on a nut making n'iachine whereby the tendency to displace the stock bar or the blanks which are severed therefroul is obviated.
Still another object is to provide a. continuously operatingapparatus of a simple character which may be operated by relatively unskilled workmen. I
Other objects will be in part obvious, and in part pointed out hereina ter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hero inafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein l is shown one of various possible embodi ments of the invention, Figure l is a. plan view of an automatic machine for producing crowned nut blanks from a stock bar; Fig. 2 is aplan view of the stock bar feeding mechanism shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an Specification. of Patent.

clevational view, partly in section, of Fig. :2; and Fig. #2 is a. ectional view of the crowning die.
Referring now more particularly to the drawir the numeral 15 indicates the frame or bed of the machine, which provides bearings 2 for a main driving shaft which is driven by a belt on the driving pulley 4. A bevel gear fixed on the main driving shaft 3 and meshes with a bevel pinion 5 which fixed on one end of a. shaft 7. This sha 4 supg'iorteiil in bearings projecting from the rear of the frame 1, and carries on its opposite end a bevel pinion 9 which mesh with a bevel gear 10 mounted on a cam slaft ll, the same cam shaft b ported in suitable bearings 12 extending from the left end of the machine. The main driving shaft 8 is provided with an ecren tric member is which issurronnded by a crank arm 15 which connects pivotally with a rcciprocatory slide 16. the last described mechanism constituting a pitnian, and transformin the rotary movement of the shaft 3 into a reciprozatorv movement of the slide l6. This slide carries two punches, a perforating punch 17 and a crowning shear punch 18. There is carried on the end of the driving .Jiaft 3, in fixed relation therewith, a bevel pinion 19 which meshes with a bevel gear 20 fixed on one end of a shaft 21. which in turn is supported for re tacion in the bracket bearing extending forwardly from the frame 1. ()n the opposite end of the shaft '31 there is secured a bevel pinion 23 which meshes with a bevel gear 24 fixed on the lower end of a short vertical shaft 25. Keyed to the shaft 25 above the bevel gear ll is a spur gear 26 mesning with a similar gear 27 which in turn is keyed or otherwise suitably secured on a shaft 28. The shaft 25 has a bearing in a projecting portion of the frame 1. The shaft 28 is supported in a movable bearing 50. The movable bearing 30 is provided with a chamber 31 adapted to receive a portion of a compression spring 32, one end 33 of which bears against the .the chamber and the other end of which bears against a wall 34 formed on the pro' jecting portion 29of the frame 1. The spring 32 has a normal tendency to urge the bearing member 30 away from the portion se a; i,
29 which tends to separate the shaft 28 from the shaft 25. Supported on the'upper ends of these two shafts 25 and 28, respectively are two rotary feed members 35 and 36. One or both of these feed members may be provided with peripheral projections 37 spaced at intervals around the circumference of the rotary member or members. Both of the members 35 and 36 are preferably mounted to rotate with the shafts or spindles 25 and 28, respectively, as the same are driven through the medium of the driving mechanism hereinbefore described. The bearing member 30, which has been described as movable, is supported within guideways 38 formed in brackets 39 secured to the frame 1 of the machine. I
Tie rods 40 are supported partially in the projecting portion 2-9 and partially in the brackets 39. These tie rods are also supported by a transversely extending fixed abutment or member 41, and are encompassed by sleeves 42 which serve to position the member 41 some distance away from the end of the movable supporting member 30. A cam mechanism 43 is interposed between the member 41 and said end of the supporting member 30, and is provided with a handle 44 whereby the said mechanism may be manually operated to permit the spring 32 to urge the feed rollers 35 and 36 apart in a manner which will be readily understood, so that the members 37 will not cooperate to feed the bar, notwithstanding continued rotation of the feed members 36. The stock bar is indicated in Fig. 1, at 45, in the form of a coil, and said coil is supported in any suitable manner idjacent the feed end of the machine. A straightening device is indicated at 16, comprising rollers 47, providing a three point bearing, through which the bar 45 is urged for the purpose of straightening the same before introducing it to the rollers. Die supporting means are indicated at 48, and comprise a crowning die 49 which cooperates with the crowning punch 18 and a perforating die which cooperates with the perforating punch 17. A stop 49 limits the movement of the stockbar in the direction of feed. A positioning finger 50 cooperates with other parts of the machine to position the stock-bar opposite the dies, and a clamp plate 51 is adaptedto be actuated by a cam on the cam shaft 11 through the intermediate niechanism comprising the headed r'r id 50' to clamp and maintain the'sto'ck bar in the correct position accorded it by means of' the positioning finger 50. A shear member 52 is firmly secured adjacent the crowning die, and is adapted to cooperate with an edge of the crowning punch to sever a nut blank from the stock bar 15. It wi-li be seen that the feed rollers 35 and 36 are adapted for con.- tinuous rotation, and that the peripherally contacting portions 37 travel in an endless path and operate at intervals to feed the stock-bar. The peripheral length of the portions 37 or of one of said portions determines the length of feed, and the stop 9 limits the movement of the stock-bar even against the action caused by the frictional engagement of the contacts 37 with said bar.
Guide members .33 and 5+ are securely connected to the frame adjacent the point of feed of the bar and comprise housings having longitudinal apertures 56 through which the stock-bar passes. These guides serve to position the bar properly with respect to the feed lugs on the rotary feed membersand also provide an additional bar straightening means. i
A plunger 57 is actuated by a cam 58to advance and meet the severed nut blank at substantially the point of severing, and the cam 58 is shaped with an offset portion to permit a spring 59 to exert its influence on the plunger 57 as the nut blank is severed from the bar so that the end of the plunger will be spring pressed against said nut blank and will cooperate with the punch to grip and carry the same into the crowning die it. This die has lateral walls which closely fit the lateral walls of the nut blank and prevent distortion of the same during the crowning operation.
In the operation of this machine the end of the stock-bar may be led through the straightening device 46 and the guide 53 and passed between the feed rollers 35 and 36. it being understood that to facilitate this latter operation the cam mechanism 43 is hand operated to permit the spring 32 to separate the ,rotary members 35 and 36. The/end m be stock-bar may then be led through gui e 54, the positioning device 50 and beyond the chimp 51. As the end of the bar is led opposite the rotary feed members. the cam mechanism 43 may be actuated to close the members. Assuming the driving shaft 3 to be rotating at this time, the peripheral projections 37 cooperate to intermittently grip and feed the stoclebar until it eventually reaches the stop 49. Also, on rotation of the driving shaft 3 the reciprocatory slide 16 is actuated to carry the punch members 17 and 18 toward the stock- 'bar, the perforating punch 17, perforating the stock-bar to form a bolt opening and the crowning punch or shear punch 18 simultaneously shearing a nut blank from the barsand carrying the same into the crowning die for crowning. The positioning device has previously been operated to position the bar, and the clamp is, of course. in clamping engagement during the operation of the punches. \Vhile the slide 16 is rei'ciprocating forwardly to perforate, sever and crown, the rota r v teed members are not cooperatively in contact with the stock-bar.
The length of the peripheral projections on the feed members is determined in order to prmide a feed of proper length. The in-- tervals between the projections are also predetermined to permit retreat of the slide 16 and release of the clamp 51 and the positioning device before the rotary members 33 and 23 3 again cooperate to feed.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a rapidly operating feed is provided, and also one which is continuously operated to inter mitiently feed the stock-bar without causing shock or strain on other parts of the operating mechanism of the machine. The apparatus accomplishes, among others. all of the objects and advantages hereinbet'ore set forth.
As many changes above construction widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof. it is inteii=.led that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
