To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH T. STUGKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moundridge, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in jacks andhas for its principal object to provide a jack which is particularly adapted for use in lifting motor vehicles upwardly so that the tires on the wheels will not engage the ground.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will effectively remove the weight of the car from the tires and which is so arranged that it may be readily adjusted to different sizes of cars.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means for easily and quickly releasing the jack and enabling the user to return the car to its normal position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which'will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a jack constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation showing the jack in its raised position. Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view through the device showing the rollers. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the device showing the winding drum. Referring to the drawing, by characters of reference, thejnumeral 1 designates one of the supporting frames of the device, while the numeral 2 designates the cooperating supporting frame. The. frame 1, hereinbefore referred to comprises thebar 3v provided at each end with the inwardly directed arms 4, while the frame 2 comprises a bar 5 having the inwardly directed arms 6 formed at each end. The arms 6 are each provided with suitable slots 7 for the reception of the bolts 8 which cooperate with the Specification of Letters Patent.

Extending through the rollers 15 hereinbefore described are the shafts 16 which extend transversely of the jack and project beyond the lateral extremities thereof as at 17 These shafts 16 form supports for the running boards 18 which are formed of any suitable material and are pro-vided with the upstanding flanges 19, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds. The rearmost shaft 16 extends through the hinge barrels 20 formed at the rear ends of the running boards and hingedly secure the hinge barrels 21 formed on the upwardly inclined guide boards 22 which, like the running boards 18 are formed with the flanges 23 which are formed on the outerinclined edges of said guide boards. Extending downwardly from each of the guide boards near their free ends are the ears 24 which form bearings for the ends of the rollers 25 which 'form supports for the rear end of the guide boards.
The guide boards being inclined, provide a means whereby the wheels of the vehicle to be jacked up are directed on the running boards 18.
The bars 3 and 5 are provided near their forward ends with suitable slots 26 for the reception of the bolts 27 which project through the standard 28 and forms a support therefor by means ofwhich it is held in position against either of the bars. Each of the supports 28 is formed with an upstanding lug 29 and a rearwardly extending lug 30. Each of these standards is provided with a vertical slot 31through which the bolts 27 extend. Suitable thumb screws 32 are threaded on to the bolts and hold the standards in adjusted position so that they may be designed to fit cars of different sizes.
Journaled near the rear ends of the bars 3 is a suitable shaft 33 on which the standards 34 are secured. These standards are provided with slots 35 so that they may be vertically adjusted with relation to the shaft 33. Formed centrally of the shaft is a suitable arm 36 to which the retractile coil spring 37 is secured and the end of the coil spring 37 opposite the one which is secured to the arm 36 is secured as at 37 to the rear end of the jack. Connected to the arm 36 and extending forwardly therefrom is the V-shaped link designated generally by the numeral 37 which comprises the hollow arms 38 carrying the set screws 39, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds. Extending into the arms 38 of the links 37 are the connecting rods 40 which are pivotally connected to the levers 41 which in turn are pivoted on the bolts 27 and cooperate with the standards 34 in supporting the rear axle of the vehicle. These connecting rods 40 are held in place on the sleeves 38 by means of the set screws 39 and it will be evident that they may be adjusted to different lengths of Vehicle.
Surrounding the forward shaft 16 of the device are the eyes 41 having formed thereon the arms 42 which converge so the forward ends are joined by means of the eye 43 to which is secured the flexible member 44, the opposite end of which is secured to the winding drum 12 hereinbefore described. It will thus be seen that when the drum is turned the flexible member will be wound thereon and thereby exert pull on the shaft 16, causing the same to pull the running boards 18 forwardly which travel upwardly and forwardly simultaneously, due to the fact that the rollers 15 are retained in the inclined slots 14.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the vehicle is driven upon the guide boards 22 and will run up the same onto the running boards 18 until the front axle engages the levers 41 which will exert pull on the connecting rods 40 thereby pulling the links 37 and causing the shaft 33 to rotate, which will throw the standards 34 up wardly so that the crotches formed in the upper ends thereof will be in position to engage the rear axle of the vehicle. The force of the wheels of the vehicle on the running boards will cause the same to travel rearwardly for a short distance thereby lowering the same so the front axle of the vehicle rests on the standards 28 and against the lugs 29, which serve as stops to limit the forward movement of the car. The rear axle rests on the rear standards 34 simultaneously and it will thus be seen that the car will be supported free of the running boards. In order to lower the vehicle, the crank is turned, thereby causing the drum 12 to rotate and winding the flexible member 44 on said drum so that pull is exerted on the axle 16 thus causing the same to travel forwardly and upwardly due to the inclination of the slots 14 until the running boards 18 engage the wheels of the vehicle and lift the same clear of the standards 28 and 34. Upon backing the vehicle, the front axle will be moved clear of the standard 28 and will release the levers 41, consequently allowing the spring 37 to return the standards 34 to theirlowered positions and the vehicle may then be backed from its position on the jack.
lVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodi ment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the character described including a frame, running boards slidably mounted laterally in the frame, standards secured near the forward end of the frame, standards pivoted near the rear end of the frame, levers pivoted to the forward standards and means connecting the levers with the pivoted standards.
2. A device of the character described including a frame, standards at the forward end of the frame, standards pivoted near the rear end of the frame, levers pivoted to the stationary standards, running boards laterally of the frame, shafts supporting the running boards and rollers mounted on the shafts and slidable in the frame.
3. A device of the character described i11- cluding a frame having slots formed in the lateral walls thereof, rollers slidably in the slots and running boards supported on the rollers.
4. A jack of the character described including a frame having upwardly and forwardly inclined slots formed therein, rollers movable in the slots, shafts connecting the rollers, running boards secured to the shafts laterally of the frame and means to exert pull on the shafts to cause the same to move upwardly in the slots in the frame and thereby raise the running boards.
5. An auto ack of the character described including a frame comprising a pair of U-shaped bars, the arms of which are adjustably connected together, the bight portions ofsaid bars being formed with upwardly and forwardly inclined slots and forming the side walls of the frame, rollers in the slots, shafts extending through the rollers, running boards mounted on the shafts laterally of the frame, standards adjustably connected near the forward end of the frame, levers pivoted to the standards, pivoted standards near the rear end of the frame, links and connecting rods connecting the pivoted standards with the levers, spring means to hold the pivoted standards normally downwardly and guide boards pivoted on the rear ends of the running boards.
6. A device of the character described including a frame, the side walls of the frame being provided with downwardly and forwardly inclined slots, rollers rotatable in the slots, shafts extending through the rollers, running boards secured to the extreme ends of the shafts, flanges on the outer edges of the running boards, guide boards pivoted on the rear ends of the running boards, rollers carried by the guide boards and supporting the same, means carried by the frame to lift In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 2c,
