Application filed August 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT EMERSON BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Raz'or-Stropping Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide means for holding the abrasive materials in a straight path while in contact with the edge of the blade; to provide means for accommodating blades of different length and shape; to avoid carrying the abrasive members past the cutting edge; and to simplify and cheapen the construction.
Drawings-Figure l is a top plan view of a machine constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, the section being taken as on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on an enlarged scale, the section being taken as on the line 33 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side view of a blade-holder used in the present machine, and showing a blade in conjunction therewith; Fig. 5 is a detail view in cross section, showing oppositely-facing abrasive members and a yielding mounting therefor; Fig. 6 is a cross section on an enlarged scale, showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken as on the line 77 in Fig. 6.
As seen in the drawings, the machine is provided with a base-plate 12, and sides 13' erected thereon. The sides 13 have routed pockets 14 formed therein. The pockets 14 are circular, and are provided with straight sections 15 slightly inclined to guide the abrasive pads 16 past the blade 17 in a straight path. The blade 17 is clamped by the plates 18, which are held between the spring jaws of a back clip 19. When the blade 17 is such as is known as a wafer blade and of the Gillette type, one of the plates 18 is furnished with guide pins "20 to register the said blade in proper relation to the back clip 19 and the pads 16. I
The pads 16 are each mounted on one of the platforms 21. The platforms 21, as shown best in Fig. 5 of the drawings, are slidably mounted on shafts 22, the ends 23 thereof being reduced to accommodate the said platforms. As shown in Fig. 5, the
Specification of Letters Patent.

24 has a crank extension 26'to which a crank handle 27 is rigidlyattached.
The ends of the platforms 21 extend into the pockets 14 to be guided by the edge thereof. Said ends are held against the sides of the pockets by springs 28. The
springs 28 each bear against one of the platforms and against one of the shafts 24. The face of each of the platforms is thus held tangentially to the edges of the pockets 14. This being so, when the platforms are moved over the straight sections 15 of the said pockets, the planes of travel of the said platforms and the abrasive pads 16 carried thereby, are parallel with said sections 15. The sections 15, as best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, of adjacent pockets, are slightly converged. The angle of convergence of the said sections corresponds with the sharpening angle for the blade 17.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7, provision is made for retracting the following edge of the abrasive pads 29, to produce an action similar to the stropping of a razor where at the beginning of the stroke, pressure is applied by the blade upon the strop,.and at the end of the stroke is relieved preliminary to rolling the razor on its back. This is-eifected in the present mechanism by mounting the platforms 30 on relatively short and long legs 31 and 32, respectively. The said legs have each a roller 33, which rollers extend in grooves 34 and 35, respectively.
The contour of the grooves 34 corresponds substantially with the edge of the pockets 14 of the preferred form. The contour of the grooves 35, however, is such as to form plied on the blade by the abrasive, or by the snapping action of the blade as the same passes from the influence of the said pads. In other words, by the operation of the straight section 38, the pad is moved relatively away from the side of the blade 17 before passing the cutting edge thereof.
Claims:
1. The combination with a fixed blade holder; of oppositely-rotating shafts on 0pposite sides thereof; abrasive pads mounted in the shafts for radial movement with reference thereto; and guides for the pads having'straight converging portions adja cent the blade holder and elsewhere curved concentrically with the shafts.
2. The combination with a fixed blade holder; of oppositely-rotating shafts on opposite sides thereof; abrasive pads mounted in the shafts for radial movement with reference thereto; guides for the pads having straight converging portions adjacent the blade holder and elsewhere curved concentrically with the shafts; and means for retracting said pads from contact with the blade in said holder during the latter pe riod of travel of said pads past said blade.
3. The combination with a fixed blade holder; of oppositely-rotating shafts on opposite sides thereof; abrasive pads mounted in the shafts for radial movement with reference thereto; guides for the pads having straight converging portions adjacent the blade holder and elsewhere curved concentrically With the shafts; and means for retracting said pads from contact with the blade in said holder during the latter period of travel of said pads past said blade, said means embodying a second guide operatively connected with the following portion of each of said pads for rocking said pads and the rear edges thereof away from said blade during the latter portion of the movement of said pads past said blade.
