RAIL-ANCHORING MEANS.
Application filed Aprlt 29. 1915.
lle it known that l. Lot'is ll. l.\nso.\'s, a ritizen ol the lnited States. residing at 'lisltilwa. in the eounty ol' llureau and State of lllinois, have invented eertain new and uselul lmprovenients in Rail Ant-Inning Means: and l do deelare the following to he a full. rlear. and exart deseription ol' the in vention. surh as will enable others Shillttl in the art to whieh it apperL-tins to make and use the same.
.\l v inv ntion relates lu'oadl v to improvenn-uts in railways and more partienlarly to means lor anehoring the rails thereof to all o the eross ties. thus preventing the latter l'rom heing shil'tvd out of parallel relation to eaeh other and likewise preventing the rails from running thereon.
The ohjeet ot' the invention is to provide means of the elass set l'orth which may be easily and inexpensively manul'aetured. whieh may he easily applied to use, and whieh will he highly ellieient in operation.
\Vith this general ohjeet in view, the invenlion resides in eertain unique eomhinatious of parts liereinal'ter l'ully deserihed and elaimed. one embodiment of the invention heing shown in the aeeompan viu g drawin; wherein like rel'erern'e ehararters designate eorresponding parts throughout the several \iews and wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion ola railwav showing the applieation ol' the anehoring means between the. rails and the. lies thereof; Fig. J is a vertiral sertion through one end ol' one ol the eross ties and the parts supported thereon: Fig. I is a top plan view of one ol the antiereeping plates: and l ig. l is a bottom plan view of a portion ol' one of the rails.
In this drawing which eonstitutes a part ol the appliealion. 'l designates a plurality ol parallel et'oss lies to the opposite ends of eaeh of \vhirh an anthenwping plate l is immovalily seeured. prel'erahl} l'our spikes 2 driven through the l'our eorners ol' eaeh plate. the heads of said spikes. however. heing disposed in eonlarl. with the opposite edges ol'lhe hase llange l of the rail ll. whereby they not only serve to prevent shilling ol' the plates 1 upon the ties 'l hut also as a means for preventing upward mouanent ol' the rail lt resting on said plates.
arly shown in the several views of As 5. the d 'aavuig, eaeh anti-ereeping plate 1 is Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 24,712.
provided on its under side with a plurality of V-shaped'rihs 3 embedded in the ties T, while the upperside of said plate is equipped with a plurality of upstanding integral ribs l whieh are ol eonsiderably less length than the ribs 2%. and which are preferably of reetaugular formation. The ribs -l are loosely rereived h v similarly shaped sockets 5 which are punehed in the base of the rail R when the same is rolled at the foundry, it being evident from l ig'. t that the ribs 4 rather looselv engage the soekets 5, thus compensating for any expansion and contraction of the rails hirh may take plaee upon changes Ht temperature. The ends of the ribs 4, however. abut the end walls of the sockets 5 rather elos lv in ord r that lateral thrust exerted upon the rail ll will not be imparted direetlv to the spikes '3, but to the plates 1 through the instruim'utality of said ribs. In addition to this disposition of plates for receiving lateral thrust. however, the outer longitudinal edges ol' the plates 1 are preferahlv provided with upstanding shoulders l whieh ahul the outer longitudinal edge of the hase ol' the rail.
ll is to he understood that two plates 1 are seeured to earh ol' the several cross ties 'l. this disposition ol' plates being advantageous sinre running ol' the rails on the ties and shilling ol' the latter in respeet to eaeh other are hoth prevented. l urtherm0re, the rails are positively held against spreading l) the eonsll'ln'lion in question.
From the foregoing deseription, when perused in eouuertion with the :weompanying drawing. all parts ol' the invention will he clearly understood lvv those skilled in the art to \vhieh the invention relates. and it will lae evident that the Sllllt'llllt' provided for aeeomplishing the desired ends will be highly advantageous although being simple and inex wusive.
I (claim:
in eomhination. a plurality of cross ties, anti-weeping plates resting on the several lies and having longitmlinallv alined shoulders on one edge. transverse integral ribs having upright, ends heing formed on the upper side ol said plates at the intermediate portion thereol'. a rail resting on the several plates and having one edge of its base (lis posed in eontaet with the alineil shoulders, said hase having transverse soelcets with upright end walls formed in its intermediate portion and opening through their lower sides only and receiving the ribs therein, the tact with the upper side. of this edge of the upright ends of said ribs abutting the upbase. right end walls of said sockets, spikes driven In testimony whereof I have hereunto set through the shoulders into the cross ties and my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 5 having their(1 heafdshdiiposedfin contact with nesses.
