Description

w. M. MELMORE. TIRE INFLATER.
APPLICATION HLEP JUNE 15, I915.
1,179,022, Patented Apr. 11,1916.
Inventor:
WILLIAM MORTIMER MELMOBE, OF LONDON, nnemim.
TIRE-INFLATER.
Application filed June 15, 1915. Serial No 34,319.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MORTIMER MELMORE, a subject of the King of England,
' residing at London, England, have invented a new and useful Tire-Inflater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tire infiaters for application to one of the engine cylinders of a motor car, and my objects are to combine in a single device an air-inlet valve and a superposed non-return pressure valve with screw nipple for the inflater tube and means for locklng one or both valves by stop-action.
I attain my objects .by thedevice illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of combined superposed valves; Figs. 2 and 3, vertical sections of superposed valves with stopcovers a series of ports 3 in communication delivery nozzle 7.
12 for delivery into a tire.
with the atmosphere. In an upper extension 4: of the shell 1 is lodged a ball-valve 5 which is held by a spring 6 retained in a When secured on the motor cylinder a, the valve 2 opens during the induction stroke of the engine piston 8 and allows air to pass through the ports 3 and the annular space 9 of the shell 1 into the engine cylinder 10, the air being com pressed and forced out at the compression stroke through the central opening 11 of the valve 2 again'stthe lifting ball 5 and through the nozzle 7 to the flexible tubing The nozzle 7 can be screwed downto locK the ball 5.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, a evice similaito that shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a stop valve and serves for permanent application in lieu of the ordinary exhaust valve-cap. In these figures the upper parts of the device are constructed and arranged in the same manner and identified by the same characters'as those in Fig. 1. The stop valve 13 is rigidly secured to the lower extension 14 of the shell 1 and, with the superposed inlet and outlet valves, is moved up and down in the valve cap 15 which has a lower aperture 16. When the stop valve 13 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented App, 11, 1916.
is moved down tight over the aperture 16,
position shown in Fig. 2, the motor cylinder will receive its usual supply of explosive mixture and act as a power cylinder. When, however, the valve 13 is moved up, position shown in Fig. 3, the mixture will be drawn into the other motor cylinders, and accord- 4 ing to a known method only air will enterthe cylinder to which the device is connected so that such cylinder is immediately con-- verted into an air-compressor. At the suction stroke pure air is drawn through the ports 3, open valve 2, annular space 9, apertures 16 and into the cylinder. At the com pression stroke, the valve 2 closes and the compressed air forces the loaded ball valve any flexible tubing into a tire, as usual.
I claim A valve comprising a chamber composed of two members one of said members having a plurality of ports and an outwardlydirected tube, a valve in said tube, a disk to close said ports and means to hold said disk in place; the other of said members having means for, engagement with a cylinder.
Signed at London, England, this 3rd. day of June 1915. p 1 4 WILLIAM MORTIMER MELMORE. Witnesses: I
