VALVE FOR RAILWAY AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS.

The valve-plug has a longitudinal chamtwo transverse ports 21 and 22 which in diameter, correspond respectively with the ports 17 and 18 of the housing. The port 21 being normally out of alinement with the exhaust port 17, is brought in register therewith by a partial rotation of the valve plug, and the smaller port 22 which normally is separated from the port 18 of the whistle 19 is by a different angular movement of the plug brought into communication therewith.
A coiled spring 23 is at its opposite ends attached to the lever 14L and a lug 2% on the valve housing to yieldingly maintain the valve plug in its normal closed position, and a stop 25 on the valve housing is placed with relation to the lever to determine by engagement therewith, the position in which the port 21 of the valve'plug registers with the port 17 of the housing for the exhaust of air from the brake system.
In operation, the hose at the end of the pipe-line is bent upwardly as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the valve is secured to the coupling member at the end'ofthe hose 3 by interlocking engagement of their complementary claws. With the parts in this position, the chamber of the valve-plug is in continuous communication with the interior of the coupling member to admit air to the ports 21 and 22.
The gasket 7 is placed in the annular recess of the coupling section and a thereto opposite recess in the face of the housing to insure an air-tight joint between the parts, and the spring 16 within the recess of the lever provides an air-tight contact of the valve-plug with the seat in the housing.
The spring 23 maintains the valve plug in its normal closed position, and a cord or chain 26 is attached at the end of the valve lever for its operation from a higher point on the car to which the valve is applied.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, the cord'is' attached adjacent the running board at the top of a box-car 27 and is thus readily accessible to the brakeman either from the ground or from the top of the car.
To apply the brakes in case of emergency the cord or chain is pulled upwardly until the movement of the valve lever is arrested by its engagement with the stop on the valve-housing when the ports 17 and 21 are in register for the exhaust of air from the air brake system.
In case a train is pushed by the engine the valve may be employed-to sound signals as a warning for pedestrians and drivers of vehicles at road crossings, by'bringing the ports 21 and 18 in register and thereby admitting air to the whistle 19.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A valve of the character described comprising a ported housing having claws adapted'to cooperate with the claws on a member of a hoseor pipe coupling of a railway air-brake system, for securing the housing to the said member, and a rotary valve-plug seated in the housing, the said valve having a chamber open for connection with the interior of a coupling member to which the housing is attached, and a port adapted to be brought into and out of register with a port in the housing and said housing and the valve plug in its normal position, cooperating to close the air-brake system against the escape of air at the point at which the housing is attached thereto.
2. A valve of the character described comprising a ported housing having claws adapted to cooperate with the claws on a member of a hoseor pipe-coupling of a railway air-brake system, for securing the housing to the said member,la rotary valveplug seated in the housing, the said valve having a chamber open for connection with the interior of a coupling member to which the housing is attached, and ports adapted to be brought in and out of register with ports in the housing, and said housing and the valve plug in its normal position, cooperating to close the air-brake system against the escape of air at the point at which the housing is attached thereto and an airsactuated signal connected with a port of said housing.
3. A valve of the character described, comprising a ported housing having claws adapted to cooperate with the claws on a member of the hose or pipe coupling of a railway air-brake system, for securing the housing to the said member, a rotary valve plug seated in the housing, the said valve having. a'chamber open fo-r'conn'ection with the interior of a coupling member to which the housing is attached, and a port adapted to be brought into and out of register with a port in the housing, an operating lever on the valve plug, and a spring yieldingly holding the lever in a. position in which the ports of the housing and the plug are out of register. 4. A valve of the character described comprising a ported housinghaving claws adapted to cooperate with the claws on a member of a hoseor pipe-coupling of a railway air-brake system, for securing the housing to the said member, a rotary valveplug seated in the housing, the said valve having a chamber. open for connection with the interior of a coupling, member to which the housing is attached, and a port adapted to be brought into and out of register with a port in the housing, an operating lever on the valve-plug, and a spring in a recess of the said lever in engagement with the housing to hold the valve plug in air-tight contact with its seat.
5. A valve of the character described comprising a ported housing having 'claws adapted to cooperate with the claws on a member of a hoseor pipe-coupling of a railway air-brake system, for securing the housing to the said member, a rotary valve plug seated in the housing, the said valve having a chamber open for connection with the interior of a coupling member to which the housing is attached, and a port adapted to be brought into and out of register with a port in the housing, an operating lever on the valve plug, a spring yieldingly holding the plug in a position in which the ports of the housing and the plug are out of register and a stop on the housing to determine the position of the lever in which a port in the valve plug is in register with a port of the housing.
6. The combination with a member of a hose or pipe coupling in a railway air-brake system, of a hand-operated valve having integral claws for its rigid and detachable connection therewith and normally closing the system against the escape of air at the point at which it is connected therewith,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the said valve having ports normally out of alinement for the exhaust of air from the system.
7. The combination with a member of a hose or pipe coupling in a railway air-brake system, of a hand-operated valve having integral claws for its rigid and detachable connection therewith and normally closing the system against the escape of air at the point at which it is connected therewith, the said valve having ports normally out of alinement for the exhaust of air from the system, and means for the operation of said valve at a point remote therefrom.
8. The combination with a member of a hose or pipe coupling in a railway air-brake system, of a hand-operated valve having integral claws for its rigid and detachable connection therewith and normally closing the system against the escape of air at the point at which it is connected therewith, the
said valve having ports normally out of alinement for the exhaust of air from the system, and an air-actuated signal connected with a port of the valve.
