To all whom z't'mwy concern Be it known that I, GUsTAv TIHALER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-J ar Closures, of which the following is a specification. y

This invention relates to improvements 1n fruit jar closures, which may be adapted to any of the ordinary type of jars.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a seal which is easily applied and removed.

A second object of my invention is to .provide a nonmetallic closure and so prevent corrosion by' 'contact with the fruit acids.

vA further object 1s to provide a cheap and lsanitary cover, which will beused but once Yand then discarded.

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel arrangement .and combination of parts as herein 'describediand pointed out inthel appended claims.

For a full comprehension of the invention reference should be had to the drawing forming a part of the specification wherein,

Denoting corresponding parts by the same numerals, 1, is the jar body having the neck shown in threaded engagement with the jar neck it willbe understood that 'any .other means of securing it thereto, whichw'ill resist an upward pull will sufiice, as the securing of this top in no way affects the sealing of the jar. To effect the sealing vof the jar I provide a gasket 7 having the circular center disk 8, around the periphery of which is formed the upstanding wall 9, and which lits snugly within theneck 2. The cap4 I4- is provided with a ,screw threaded hole in alinement with the apex of the .conical disk 12. Through this hole isl threaded. a screw l16 having a head 17 by which it may be readily turned. Extending from the 'center of this disk is a radial 'slot the conical center 12 the upstanding flange 13 and the lateral rim 14. Thus when pressure is applied tothe apex of the conical portion the tendency is to open the cone and press the Harige 13 outwardly.

In use, after placing the articles to be preserved within the j ar the gasket 8 is applied with the rim l0 resting on the top of the neck 2. The compression member l1 is then placed over the gasket and the cap 4 fastened to the jar, in this case by screwing it thereon. Screw 16 is next turned to bring the point thereof into contact with the apex neck and the heat of the contents meltsthe wax-like substance and firmly holds the gas ket to the glass, this action being also as-` sistedby the vacuum within thejar. .When

the contents cool the cap 4 and compression member 11 may be removed leaving the-jar,
