Be it known that I, CHARLES AUGUST JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, re-

siding at 3205 Fullerton avenue, in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Basket and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, coneise,-and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the'specification. f

My invention relates to an improved method of basket working, particularly the making of flower baskets and the like and has for its main object the production of baskets ofany and all sizes, shapes and styles by the use ofa single piece of material for the main body portion of the basket.

In carrying out my new process in the present preferred manner I use for the main body portion a single piece of cardboard of a weight to be determined by the size of the basket to be made although I do not wish` to be limited to this material as any suitable material, such aspaper of variousv weight and texture, bark, leather, metal, veneer, reed or the like can be used.

The'bottom portion of the handle may be fastened to the bottom member 13 as shown at 19 in Fig. 5 which will procure additional strength and rigidity and the handle may be additionally fastened if that material be pasteboard or paper, the

necessary finish, hardness and moisturel resisting properties.

The product obtained by the method herein described, being both a new and novel i article of manufacture, I also ask protectionv thereon in the appended claims.

I do not wish to be limited to the precise steps in carryin out my process herein described as variatlons in details may be found desirable and I have herein sought to eX- plain my new method of makingb'askets and the like by such steps as will be found satisfactory'in use. Neither dojI wish to be limited to .materials as my process will be found equally satisfactory and effective ,i no mattei-what the material so long as it has any adaptability for use in the basket making or analogous arts.

Having thus described my invention and the product to be obtained by my new method, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A basket having a body portion made of a single piece, cut to shape and size and provided with a plurality of slits interwoven with ribs, having a bottom member, a strengthening and finishing hoop or band around the bottom, finishing and strengthening bands interwoven with the ribs at the top and a handle substantially as herein shown and described. n'

2. A receptacle having. a body portion made of a single part cut to shape and size and provided `with a plurality of continuous slits into which are interwoven ribs' or posts, strengthening and finishing members at the top and bottom, and a bottom portion substantially as shown and described.

3. A basket having a body portion made of a single piece of material cut to size and shape and provided with a pluralityof ciroumferential parallel slits into which are interwovenV a plurality of upright posts or ribs, a solid bottom member, a strengthening and finishing band or hoop at the bottom, strengthening and reinforcing circumferential bands at the top interwoven with the tops of the' upright posts' and a suitable 4handle substantially asahereinshown and described.
