SHOULDER-PIECE FOR VESTIBUIIE- G'AR DIAPHRAGMS.
Application filed February 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lvliddletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Shoulder- Pieces for vestibule-Car Diaphragms; and I do hereby declare the following, whenv taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of' reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a broken view partly in front elevation, and partly in vertical central Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
section of a vestibule-car diaphragm provided. with my improved shoulder-pieces. Fig. 2 a view of the diaphragm in transverse section on an enlarged scale, on the line ab of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a detached plan view on an enlarged scale, of one of my improved selvage-edge shoulder-pieces. Fig. 4 a. schematic view showing the selvage-edges of two of my improved shoulder-pieces as overlapped and stitched together.
My invention relates to an improvement in the so called shoulder-pieces used to unite the top and leg members of, vestibule-car diaphragms, the object being to produce a shoulder-piece of superior appearance, du-' rability and reduced cost.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shoulder-piece for the diaphragms of vestibule-cars, the said shoulder- I piece being of hour-glass shape and having its inwardly curved edges woven with a selvage.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ a plurality of shoulderpieces 2 initially woven in hour-glass shape with their oppositely located inwardly curved edges woven with selvages 3, whereby the use of independently formed and separately applied binding edges is dispensed with, with the result of improving therappearance of the shoulder-pieces, making them more durable and reducing their cost.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 79,562. i
As shown in Fig. 1, the curved top-piece 4 and the legs 5 ofthe diaphragm are united by two sets of three of the described shoulder-pieces 2, these shoulder-pieces being.con-' nected together and to the said top-pieces 4t and legs 5 so as to overlap, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. As shown, the said shoulder-pieces are stitched together throughout selvage edges 8, such stitches 6 being schematically shown in Fig. 4. I do not, however, limit myself to any particular way of stitching the-said edges together, nor to stitching the selvage edges together throughout their length, since if desired the central portions of the selvage edges of the shoulder-pieces may be left unstitched so as to slide upon each other. As shown in Fig. 2, the end edges 7 of the shoulder-pieces are attached to frame-pieces 8, 9 and 10 which form no part of my present invention.
It. will be readily understood that it is much more economical to initially weave the shoulder-pieces in the required form and with selvage edges than to cut them out of larger pieces of cloth and then bind their edges, since the waste of cloth is avoided,
as well as the cost of the binding and the expense of applying it. It will also be understood that a neater joint results fromthe overlapping of selvage edges than from the overlapping of bound edges, and that the play between the selvage edges, if any play is permitted, will'result in less wear than play between bound edges. the formation of selvages-upon the edges of the shoulder-pieces prevents the edges from fraying out under the stitches employed to unite the I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, an hourglass shapedshoulder-piece for use in vestibule-car diaphragms, the said piece being initiallywoven in hour-glass form and having its inwardly curved opposite edges provided with woven selvages.
