JAM-ES H. WILSON AND STEVENS BENNETT, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO WILSON 8c BENNETT MFG. CO., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS. Y
TOP FOR OIL-TANKS,
usually provided with a pan or depressionY in the top for convenience in fill-ing cans or.
Vother small receptacles. A removable pump is commonly inserted through the bottom of this pan, the bottom also being provided with a drain to allow the overflow or drip to run back into the tank. These cans are frequently made of galvanized iron, and heretofore it has been common to solder the bottom of the pan into position, but such soldering is apt to become loose on account of the galvanizing material giving way, and such method of attachment has not proven satisfactory. f
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved form of top for tanks, which may be cheaply and quickly made and placed in position, which will strengthen the tank, which will provide a sufliciently tight closure, and which will'l have such other advantages as will appear from the following description.
We have illustrated a preferred form of our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a plan view of a tank provided with our improved top; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail showing a blank used for forming the pan portion of the top.
Asshown in these drawings,4lV representsV a tank of any ordinary or preferred form of construction, such tanks being usually provided, around the top, with a bead 5. In the present instance, we have shown" the pan portion 6 of our improved top as eX- tending over about one-half .of the tank, although it mav be made larger or smaller if desired, but this is the preferable arrangement. This pan portion Gis formed from a blank 7 of suitable material, such as sheet iron or the like. It comprises a bottom 8 having an upwardly extending flange 9l Specification of LettersrPatent.

this flange being `bent or :formed as indicated at 10 to fit closelyaround the bead. A corresponding straight flangeA 11 extends upwardly from the diametrical or straight side of the bottom 8 and connects with anintegrally formed horizontal-'stripl which extendsdiametricallyV across the top of the tank and 'hasits -ends 13 bent or curled around the bead 5. The opposite edge 14 of the strip*` 12 is bent downwardlyr and back vtoward the strip, therebyv stilfening the strip and also serving to furnish hingelike connection for the other half 15 of the provided, along its diametrical edge 16, with anjupwardly bent flange which engages with the flange or edge 14 andits circumferential edge is provided with a flange 17 which is adapted to snap down over the bead 5 to hold this portion of the top in top. This hemispherical or half top 15 isY position, although being left sufliciently free Y so that thisr portion of the top may be removed when desired.'` yThe bottom 8 of the pan is preferably provided with a hole 18, through which a pump may be inserted, and with a hole 19 to allow the overflow or drip to return into the tank. A swinging cover 20 for covering the pump and pan may be hinged'to the cross strip 12 in the usual manner, if desired. Our combined pan and cover member is made from a blank 7 'substantiallyr of the form shown in Fig. 3, such blank being bent or curved at points, as indicated by the dotted lines, in order to form the various parts above described. After the blank has been cut out, it is pressed by means of suitable dies to form the panv portion` and is thenv inserted in position in the top of the tank, and then the flanges 10 and 13 are turned over to engage with the bead v it will be seen that the pan may be cheaply and quickly formed and inserted in position, and such pan will not only be rigid yand substantial but will strengthen the top of the tank. After the pan portion is fastened in position, lthe flange 16 of the semicirculargmemr ber 15 is hooked `under the flange 14, and the outer depending flange 17 is then pressed downwardly over the bead 5, thereby securing this half of the top in place.
Having' thus described our invention, which, however, we do not wish to limit to the exact form of construction herein shown and descrbed,eX.cept as set forth in lpan having Yan upwardly extending peripheral liange fitting within the upper end of said tank, the edge of said flange being bent to engage with the bead around the top of the tank, said pan being also provided with an upwardly extending, integrally formed flange extending across the tank, said flange connecting with a horizontal erosspiece, the ends of which orosspieee are vbent to engage with the bead at the top of the tan 2. The combination with a cylindrical tank having a bead around the upper edge thereof, of a substantially semicircular top member provided with an upwardly extending peripheral flange, the edge of said flange JAMES H. wiLsoN. sTEvENs A.
