Application filed June 19, 1912. Serial No. 704,601. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VALTER M FORREST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia,
State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in combination tools, and has forits object to provide a tool of this character particularly adapted for use by printers or compositors.
The invention has for its object to construct a tool of this type which will include a plurality of devices used by printers which may be compactly folded and carried in the pocket when not in use.
Nith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool, showing the same unfolded. Fig. 3is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the tool folded. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tool. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a part of the tool having the spring jaws in operative position.
The device consists of a plurality of arms 1, 2, 3 and 4, said arms being slightly tapered throughout their lengths. The major ends of the arms are provided with perforations 5, which when in registered relation are adapted tov receive a pin 6, said pin serving to pivotally connect the arms so that they may be moved independently. Upon one end of the pin 6 is secured a hook 6 which is adapted to engage the upper edge of a pocket to prevent accidental displacement of the tool.
The arm 1 has its outer face graduated as at 7 so that the same may be conveniently used as a ruler or scale. The extreme outer end of the arm 1 is bifurcated, and supported in the furcations 8 thereof is a pin 9 upon which is rotatably mounted a rubber disk 10 which is for thepurpose of making erasures The arm 2. has its outer end formed in a manner similar to the arm 1 and has rotatably mounted therein a circular knife 11 which serves as an effectual from lead, said disk for the purpose of marking paper or for any other purpose deslred. The arm 4: is provided with a socket, and inwhich is secured the inner end of the loop 16, said loop having its arm so bent as to form an axle 17-, and upon which is rotatably mounted a brush 18 whichv is employed for applying paste. The arm 1 is providednear the extreme inner end of the major, end thereof with a transversely arranged perforation 19, and in which is mounted a small shaft 20. To the. opposite 1 ends of said shaft are secured the inner ends of sprlng jaws 21, said jaws serving to act astweezers when grasped andforced toward each other.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawing it will be noted that the spring fingers 21 when in their inoperative position bear firmly against the sides of all arms, thus holding the same in their folded position. Pivotally connected to one end of the pin 6 is a circular frame 22 and in which is secured a magnifying glass 23, the purpose of which will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
From this construction it will be seen that a tool has been produced which'comprises a number of useful articles necessary in the printers trade, the same being'conveniently connected, thus furnishing a device or tool which will be at all times handy.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, th combination with a plurality of individually operable tool-carrying members having a common pivot connection between them, of a tool comprising a plurality I of resilient members pivoted to one of said first-mentioned members and spaced longitudinally thereof from the common pivot of the said members, the members of said tool being movable on their pivotto project with their free ends away from the pivotally connected tool-carrying members into operative positions and movable to lie against opposite pendent pivotal movement of the tool-carryfaces thereof and parallel With the pivot of ing members. 19 the tool-carrying members to hold the said In testimony whereof, I aflix my signatool-carrying members against movement on ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
their common pivot, said tool members being XVALT ER M. FORREST. also adapted to lie at times entirely con- Witnesses: cealed behind the tool-carrying members to JAMES FEALY, which they are pivoted and permit the inde- HARRY J. CLIFTON.
