To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JASPER JOI-IAN HEN- RICK LIBnRo'm-I, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in'the borough of Bronx, Bronx county, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rat-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in rat shields of that type which finds particular application in connection with thepreventing of access of rats to ships when the latter are moored at a wharf.

One of the objects of the invention is to permit the rats on board ship to go ashore while preventing any rats on the shore from going on board the ship along any of the hawsers.

In the .following I have described in connection with the accompanying drawings, one form of rat shield with certain modifications illustrating the practice of my invention, the features thereof being more partie ularly pointed out hereinafter in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan .view of the rat shield showing the hawser in section; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end view of the trap door outlet to the exit opening; Fig. i is a sectional view of a portion of the device along the line 4l of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional View of the exit opening as shown along the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a means of securing certain adjustable apparatus; Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the rat shield complete in place on a hawser; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of an extensible holder adapted to be clamped to the hawser at one end and to be connected to the rat shield proper at the other end.

The inner or ship end of the exit open ing is free from obstruction while the Outer or land side opening is closed by a trap door m having a sight opening it so that the rat in endeavoringto leave the ship will pass through the exit opening toward the spot of light and after passing it the trap door will close behind him. The tubes j and 76 could of course be omitted and a simple opening with a trap door provided in place thereof, or the tubes could be extended either in length or in number to any desirable extent.

The rat shield is secured to the hawser 0 by means of a ring 79 having a relatively broad inner surface so that it will slide easily upon the hawser and is secured to removable portions q and 1" adapted to be held within the two halves wand b of the rat shield as shown in Fig. 4L, the outer periphery of the portions 9 and r fitting 0 7 into a groove son the inner edges of portions 0; and b, a gasket 15 assisting in forming a tight ]O1Ilt when the portions Q and r are crowded 1n. The ring 79 must of course be of a size to fit the hawser with which the rat shield is to be used and the adjustable means disclosed is therefore provided for that purpose, so that the rat shield may be adapted to fit any size of hawser up to the limit of the diameter of the openingthrough the rat shield proper a and b. v

The rat shield may be secured to the hawser by means of an extensible clamping arrangement such as is shown in Fig. 8, wherein the Y is adapted to slide on the arm a to which it is held by set screw o. The Y is provided with hooks w, 10, adapted to take into suitable openings w, w" in rat shield proper a and b as shown. The other end of the extensible holder is adapted to be buckled or otherwise securedto the hawser by means of clamp and buckle m, for example. I 1

It is obvious that many of the details of arrangement and construction of the parts may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention andI do not wish to restrict myself to any of such details further than the scope of the appended claims demands.

I claim:

1. A rat shield comprising a shield proper composed of a plurality of members adapted to be fastened together having an opening therein adapted to receive a haWser and a second opening for the passage of rats through said shield from one side to the other and means associated with said second opening for preventing the rats from repassing therethrough.

2. A rat shield provided with an opening adapted to receive a hawser and a second opening for the passage of rats through said shield from one side to the other and a trap-door acting as a closure for said second opening.

3. A rat shield provided with an opening adapted to receive a hawser and a second opening for the passage of rats, a tube a apted to fit in said second opening and a 1 trap-door in said tube.

4. A rat shield provided With an opening adapted to receive a havvser and a second opening, for the passage of rats, a plurality of tubes adapted to be joined together end to end and to fit in said second opening and a trap-door in one of said tubes.

5. A rat shield provided With an opening to receive a hawser and removable means to vary the size of said opening, said rat shield being also provided With an opening to act as a rat exit, and a trap-door for said exit opening.
