Description

T. ARNESON.
DOOR LATCH. APPLICATION FILED MAYH. 1913.
I Patented Apr. 11; 1916.
THE COLUMBIA PLANOORAPH p0 WASHINGTON. n
'iECKLAN Anunson, or CLARKS GROVE, MINNESOTA;
DOOR-LATCH.
Application filed May 14, 1913. Serial No. 767,590.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TEOKLAN ARNESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarks Grove, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door latches and more particularly to a latch adapted primarily for use on barn doors, poultry houses and the like and its object is to produce a device of this class that is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following speci fication, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved latch in position. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 f
is a perspective view of the angular plate employed, the barn and barn door being shown in section.
' Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 is the barn door or poultry house door to which my latch is applied and 2 is the barn or house. To the outside of the barn door a latch bar 8 is pivoted upon a bolt 4 which bolt also pivotally carries a reach bar 5 disposed inside the barn door parallel with the said latch bar. The opposite end of the reach bar is apertured to permit passage therethrough of a threaded handle 6 which also passes through an elongated aperture 7 in the barn door and through an aperture in the aforesaid latch bar and the purpose of which is to oscillate the latch bar in the apertured portion of the barn door.
8 is the ordinary apertured secured to the barn door and through which the latch bar passes and 9 the keeper carried by the barn and adapted for releasable locking engagement with the latch bar for holding the sald door fast in its closed position.
,10 is an angular plate secured to the barn guide plate I door and in the looped end of the same the locking lever 11 is pivoted which is formed with a shoulder 11 so formed as to lie immediately above the latch bar when both members 11 and 3 are in closed or associated relation, said shoulder 11 then abutting the barn wall as shown in full lines in Fig. 2; the said lever 11 is adapted for engagement with the latch bar to retain the same in en gagement with the keeper 9 and is in fric-.
tional contact with the free extremity of a flat spring 12 secured to the angular plate l 0, whereby said lever is retained in operative position. An aperture 13 is provided in the barn and through the same the body of a spring-pressed bolt 14 extends for contact with the lever 11, the spring and head of said bolt being disposed upon the inside of the barn and the purpose of said bolt being to permit movement of the latch from the inside of the barn. By striking a blow upon the head of the spring-pressed bolt the same forces the lever 11 out of engagement withthe latch bar against the pressure of the spring 12 and then by raising the said latch bar out of engagement with the keeper 9 by means of the handle 6 past the shoulder 11 the door may be opened from the inside of the barn. From the outside of the barn thelever 11 may be manually raised against the tension of its spring 12 and the latch bar ralsed out of engagement with the keeper 9 and the door opened.
What is claimed is- 1. A latch comprising a latch bar and a reach bar, a pivot connecting said members, a handle connecting said members a keeper, a pivotally supported locking lever for engagement with said latch bar, a flexible member carried by the supports of said lock-- 2. A latchcomprising a latchbar and a reach bar, a pivot connecting said members, a handle connecting said members, a keeper for said latch bar, a pivotally supported locking lever for engagement with said latch bar, a spring carried bythe supports of said locking lever in engagement with said lever to yieldably retain it in engagement with said latch bar, and a spring-pressed bolt dieposed adjacent said locking lever capable of ture in the presence of two subscribing Witcontact therewith whereby said lever may nesses.
be disengaged from said latch bar to permit MR. TECKLAN ARNESON. the same to be raised out of said keeper by 5 the aforesaid handle. Witnesses? In testimony that I claim the foregoing JAS. L. SoRENsoN, as my own I have hereto afiiXed my signa- HENRY ARNEsoN.
