Be it known that I, HENRY A. Heretofore in paper feeding devices of this character devices have been used in connection with the drag roll for aiding in keeping a plurality of webs taut ing them one way or, another. One difficulty with this system is that in running two or more webs over a drag roll in this way,

will be seen-that the invention is shown as applied to a web press having four sets of printlng couples 10 and 10 The web introduced into each couple is shown as being laid smoothly over the surface of the first impression cylinder before printing by the use of a bending roll 11. This deflects the web away from the printing cylinder toward the impression cylinder just before the web engages the type. V
Two rolls 12 and 13 are provided between the first and second couples of each printing mechanism so located as to bend the web around the first impression cylinder a slight around part of the impression cylinder and to draw away from the printing cylinder immediately after the impression.
The roll 12 which comes in contact with the freshly printed side of the web has a circumference equal to the length of an impression or a printed product, that is, one half of the effective circumference of the plate cylinder. It will be understood, of
.course, that it may have a circumference equal to any even multiple of one half the length of a printed product, or of a complete set of plates. Thus, the inked impressions deposited on this roller always register and they cannot be transferred to blank spaces or margins. These rolls are also arranged so as to bring the web into contact with the impression cylinder of the second couple besecond couple the web passes to a roll 14 which also keeps the web away from the printing surface as it leaves the second couple and increases the wrap around the impression cylinder after printing. These thus constitute guide rolls which prevent 'fore it enters the type thereof. From the outer and wrinkles in the web and insure the laying of the web smoothly on the impression cylinders, both before and after printing. The guide or bending roll 14 is of the same size as the roll 12 and for the same reason. The same is true of a second bending roll 15. From the bending roll 15 the web passes over a bending roll 16, a propeller roll 17, compensating roll 18, and a drag roll 19. All these rolls are shown also of the same diameter as the roll 12, or satisfy the principles described in connection with it, and for the same purpose.
In Fig. 1 the web is shown as slit into two parts by a slitter 20, each part of the web passing to a diflerent propelling roll 17 and each one being operated in the same way. The drag roll is. also shown as provided with a slitter 21 for an obvious purose.'
p The four propeller rolls shown in Fig. 1 are shown as arranged conveniently so that the two central ones are near each other and the webs passing over them are controlled bya mechanism supported by a single set of bearings. The two outer ones are provided with controlling mechanisms, separate, of course. The description of the double controlling mechanism coiiperating with the two central propelling rolls will serve to show the arrangement and operation of the other two sets.
Referring now to Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5, it will be seen that the frame of the machine is provided with a pair of brackets 25. These brackets support a plurality of shafts comprising a series of hollow tubes 26 and an inner rod 26*. In thesefigures there are ten 1 of these shafts each one located loosely with respect to those outside of it so that each one is capable of turning independently of the other Each inner one projects at each end beyond the next one outside. For the purpose of turning them each one is provided on one projectingend with a collar. 27 and with a screw 28 for securing the collar to its end.
From each collar extends a radial arm 29. Each of these arms is provided with a screw 30 and with a hand wheel fixed on the screw. In the. form shown the arms are arranged alternately; that is, the arms of every alternate shaft extend downwardly Those which ex- I and the others upwardly. tend upwardly also are arranged alternately in another respect, that is, the screws are arranged on opposite sides alternately for the purpose of economizing in space. The screws also are arranged difi'erently on opposite sides, I those on one side pressing against a horizontal bar 33 and those on the other side screwing into this bar. This bar is mounted on a palr of arms 34 which ex-' tend upor down as the case may be. The inner arms 34 are linked together by a tie rod 38 passing through and secured to legs 39 on arms 34.
The bar 33 is of a length, between shoulders, equal to the combined widths of the several arms and filling pieces 35 located between them. One end of it passes through the outer arm 34 and is threaded and provided with a hand wheel nut 36 which can be screwed up to secure the several arms in their adjusted positions and prevent their jarring and working loose. The other end is secured to the inner arm 34.
On the bracket 25 are a pair of projections 40 each having a boss 4l-thereon, provided with a pair of pin holes 42. The arms 34 are centered on the shafts and each of the inner ones has an arm 45 projecting therefrom. These arms 45 are provided with spring-pressed pin handles 46 adapted to enter either one of the pin holes 42 to hold the arms 34 in either of two positions.
Each of the shafts 26-26 is provided at its outer end where it projects beyond the end of the next larger tube with a circular split collar 50 secured to the shaft by a clamping bolt 51. Extending out from this collar are a pair of arms 52 to which are secured by bolts 53 a stud 54. This is provided with a bearing surface and with ballbearings 55 for supporting a guide roll 56 in such a Way that this roll will be free to turn with a minimum of friction. The particular construction of this roll will not be described in detail as it does not constitute a part ofthis invention but it is provided with a circumferential recess in which are fixed a number of circular leather disks 57. lit will be seen that each of these rolls, being entirely free to rotate, can serve for increasing or decreasing the Web and the propelling roll, the web running between the propelling roll and the leather disks. These rolls are arranged as indicated in Fig. 2 and run in the several margins of thesheet, five of them being shown in this case.
The drag roll 19 is also provided with a plurality of freely rotating guide rolls 58 similar to the rolls 56 and controlled in a similar way for the purpose of controlling the plurality of webs after they have been brought into registration with each other.

This causes that part ofthe webto be speeded up more nearly to the circumferential speed of the propeller roll, and changes the direction of the web slightly. This shows why these rolls are called guide rolls.

When this is done, the hand wheel 36 is again tightened up to hold the parts against accidental loosening. When it is desired to prevent feeding altogether the pins 46 are withdrawn and the whole device turned back out of contact with the web.
The above description applies to the double construction shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4: and 5 and the single construction shown in Fig. 6'which is of the same character except that it has only half the tubes and adjustments. It will be seen from this description that the operator has absolute control of each Web individually and can bring all the webs into proper condition before they reach the drag roll 19. Consequently, the difficulties mentioned at the beginning of the specification are entirely avoided and all the webs can be kept taut and accurately registered. Moreover, if one of the webs tends to get out of adjustment it does not affect the others and the rectifying of this difficulty does not affect the adjustment which may have been provided for the other webs. It will be seen also that by running the several propelling rolls 17 at a speed a considerable percentage above web speed and applying this individual adjustment, no difficulty is encountered from the fact that the several webs as they pass over the drag roll run at slightly different speeds owing to the increased diameter which the outer webs have under them on account of the thickness of the webs below.
Although I have illustrated and'described a detailed embodiment of the invention, I am aware'of the fact that many modifications can be made therein and that the invention can be carried out with many changes in details of construction without departing from the scope thereof as expressed in the claims, therefore, I do not wish to be limited in these respects, but

1. In a web feeding and guiding device for rotary web printing presses, the combination with a plurality of propeller rolls, of means for individually controlling the direction-of the passage of each web over each propeller roll.
2. In a web feeding and guiding device 65 for rotary web printing presses, the combination with a plurality of propeller rolls, asingle drag roll for receiving the webs from all of said propeller rolls, and means for controlling the direction of passage of a plurality of webs over the drag roll, of

In a device of the character described the combination with a plurality of propeller rolls, each operating at excess of web speed and adapted to receive a single web, of a drag roll in position for receiving the webs from said propeller rolls, a series of freely rotatable rolls cooperating with each propeller roll and engaging the web running over the same, means for individually adj usting said freely rotatable rolls, and means for simultaneously moving a plurality of said freely rotatable rolls toward or away from the propeller roll with which they cooperate.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a propeller roll, and a controlling device for the web on the propeller roll comprising a series of concentric shafts adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, and a series of web guiding rolls, each carried by one of said shafts and all in position to engage a web passing over said propeller roll.

In a device of the character described, the combination witha propeller roll, and a controlling device for the web on the propeller roll comprising a series of shafts of different sizes located one within another and adjustable circumferentially independently-of each other, and a series of web guiding rolls, each carried by one of said shafts and allin position to engage a web passing over said propeller roll.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of propeller rolls, means for guiding a single web over each roll, a drag roll for receiving the webs from said propeller rolls, and a controlling device for each propeller roll comprising a series of parallel shafts adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, and a series of web guide rolls, each carried by one of said shafts and all in a position to engage a web passing over one of said propeller rolls, each of said guide rollscomprising a leather disk having a set of ball bearings therein, a shaft or stud on which the ball bearings rotate and an arm extending out fromone of said shafts for holding said stud.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a propeller roll, and a controlling device for the propeller roll comprising a series of parallel shafts adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, and a series of web guide rolls, each carried by one of said shafts and all in a position to engage a web passing over said propeller roll, each of said guide rolls comprising a leather disk, a shaft or stud on which the disks rotate and an arm extending out from one of said shafts for holding said stud.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a series of hollow tubes of difi'erent sizes located one within another and adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, each of said tubes projecting from each end of the next larger tube in which it is located, a series of web guide rolls, each carried by one projecting end of said tubes, means whereby said tubes can be adjusted individually and circumferentially, and means for adjusting said tubes simultaneously.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a propeller roll, of a series of hollow tubes. of different sizes located one within another and adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, a seriesof guide rolls, each carried by one of said tubes and all in a position to engage a web passing over said propeller roll, each of said guide rolls being mounted on the end of a hollow tube which projects beyond the end of the next larger tube in which it is locate-d and each tube having on the other end projecting from the next larger tube an arm for adjustingvit.

In a device ofthe character described, the combination with a propeller roll, of a series of hollow tubes of difierent sizes 10- cated one within another and adjustable -circumferentially independently of each other, each of said tubes projecting at both ends beyond the end of the next larger tube in which it is located, a series of web guide rolls, each carried by one of said tubes and all in a position to engage a web passing over said propeller roll, a collar fixed to'the projecting end of each tube, an arm extending from the collar, an adjusting screw on said arm, and a stationary bar engaged by said screws whereby said screws can be operated to adjust each tube individually and circumferentially for the purpose of regulating the pressure of said guide rolls on the web.

In a device, of the character described, the combination with a propeller roll, of a series of hollow tubes of different sizes located one within another and adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, each of said tubes projecting at each end beyond the end of the next larger tube in which it is located, a series of web guide rolls arranged in a row, each carried by the projecting end of one of said tubes and all in aposltion to engage a web passing over screw on said arm, a stationary bar, engaged by said screw whereby said screw can be nrzaeee operated to adjust each tube individually and circumferentially for the purpose of regulating the pressure of the guide rolls on the web, an arm for supporting said bar and means for moving said arm and bar to two positions in one of which all of said tubes turn to move the guide rolls out of contact with the web.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a series of hollow tubes of different sizes located one within another and adjustable circumferentially independently of each other, each of said tubes projecting from each end of the next larger tube in which it is located, a series of Web guide rolls, each carried by one projecting end of said tubes, a collar fixed to the other projecting end of each tube, an arm extending from the collar, an adjusting screw on said arm, a stationary bar engaged by said screws whereby said screws can be operated to adjust each tube individually and circumferentially, an arm for supporting said barand means for moving said arm and bar to two positions for adjusting said tubes simultaneously.

In a device of "the characterdescribed, the combination of a series of independently adjustable shafts, a series of web guide rolls, each carried by one of said shafts, a collar fixed to each shaft, an arm extending from the collar, an adjusting screw on said arm, a stationary bar engaged by said screws whereby said screws can be operated to adjust each shaft circumferentially, an arm for supporting said bar, and means for moving said arm and bar to two positions for adjusting said shafts and rolls simultaneously.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a series of independently adjustable shafts, a series of web guide rolls, each carried by one of said shafts, an adjusting screw connected with each shaft, means whereby said screws can be operated to'adjust each shaft circumferentially, and means for adjusting all of said shafts and rolls simultaneously.
16. In a device of the character described, the-combination of a circumferentially adjustable shaft an arm extending out from it, a stud fixed to the arm, ball bearings on the stud, a roll on the ball bearings, said roll having a circumferential recess at one edge, and series of leather disks located in said recess and projecting therefrom toconstitute the bearing surface of the roll.
17. In a device of the character described, the combination of an adjustable stud, a roll on the stud, said roll having a circumferential recess at one edge, and a series of leather disks located in said recess and projecting therefrom to constitute the bearing surface of the roll.
18. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a circumferentially adjustable shaft, an arm extending out from it, a stud on the arm, a roll on the stud,
said roll having a circumferential recess, and a series of circular disks located in said recess and projecting therefrom to constitute the bearing surface of the roll.
