THE COLUMBIA FLANOGRAPH co., WASHINGTON, n. c.
JOSEPH F. EDEE. or BAETIMORE, MARYLAND.
ETEE AQEARM-EOX PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. EDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Fire-Alarm- Box Protector, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fire alarm box protectors; and the object of my improvement is the provision of means for immediately notifying those in the vicinity of a fire alarm box of any attempt to open the box.
A further object of my improvement is the provision of means for instantly illuminating the vicinity of a fire alarm box upon any attempt being made to open'the same. And, a further object of my improvement is the provision of means for identification of the person attempting to open a fire alarm box.
view my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended. 1
In the drawing of the herein described embodiment of my invention Figure 1, shows in elevation the application of my invention to a lamp post such as might be installed on a public highway. Fig. 2, is an enlarged front view in elevation of the application of my invention as shown in Fig. 1, taken at right angles to the same, the pole being broken to bring the parts nearer together for illustration the door of the fire alarm box being open. Fig. 3, is a sectional view of the fire alarm box taken through A B of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
' 1 is a post or support, such as an ordinary street lamp post.
2 is a fire alarm box.
3 is an electric light.
4: is an electric siren.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
With the foregoing and other objects in.

Application filed June 25, 1915. Serial No. 36,193.
5 are electric switches of the normallyv closed type located so that door 6 of the fire alarm box operates them when closed to break the circuit. The switches are installed in parallel so that either switch when closed completes the circuit.
7 is an automatic stop on the door which upon the opening of the door projects preventing the door from being closed sufiiciently to operate the switches 5.-
8 is the lock on door 6 of the ordinary type provided with a key'9 secured in the usual way to prevent removal. Key 9 is provided with prepared faces 10 for the detection of fingerprints for identification, such as a high polish on a metal surface or other well known means, care being taken to protect said faces after preparation from handling by a cover over the same until-the box is locked and ready for use when the cover is removed: the cover may consist of a silk bag or a paraiiin cap not shown.
11 is the key box of the usual type provided witha glass front for breaking purposes for access to the key.
12 are batteries or source of electric energy, and may be located in the fire alarm bOX'lf there is room or in the post or in some other convenlent position. If the ordinary lighting circuit is used suitable resistance is interposed to accommodate the siren and the electric lamp controlled by the switches.
, In practice it is found best to locate the siren and the lamp high out of reach of the ordinary pedestrian, the lamp being arranged and provided with means to espeltgially illuminate the vicinity in front of the The operation of my invention is [as follows: The door 6 being closed switches 5 are open, thecircuit is broken, the siren is inoperative and the light is out. Stop 7 is in place, housed as it were, key 9 is in position for unlocking the door, and faces 10 are prepared and in condition to perpetuate any imprint they may receive. Upon the unlocking of door 6 by key 9 the door may be opened. Upon the opening of the door,
switches 5 automatically close being as sug-' Upon the closing closed again until reset.
5 light 3 becomes of either of the switches illuminated and siren 4 becomes operative, immediately notifying every one Within hearing that some one has opened the door of the box. The light discloses and the faces of the key perpetuates the identity of the person opening the same.
Havingthus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A fire alarm box key having the usual box casing, in combination With a prepared surface on said key for registering finger prints.
