IMPROVEMENT IN OILING JOURNALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,845, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. WINNE, of Albany, in the county ofAlbany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oiling J ournals, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference heing had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a detail sectional view of my improved oiling device as connected with the journal of a vertical shaft. l
My invention consists in the construction of the journal and bearing of a vertical shaft so as to feed the oil at the bottom thereof and cause the journal to receive and transfer it, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A represents the journal of a vertical shaft. B is the stationary part of the bearing, and C is the removable part of the bearing, in which is formed the oil-cup or reservoir D, the open upper end of which is closed by a screw-plu g F. From the upper and lower parts of the cup or reservoir D channels d1 d2 lead into the journal A. E is a rod or plug which passes through the screw-plug F, and extends down to the bottom of the said oil-cup or reservoir. The lower part of the rod or plug E is grooved upon one side, so that when the rod is turned so as to bring the said groove opposite the channel d1 the oil may flow through 'said channel to the journal A, and when the rod or plug E is turned so as to turn the groove in its lower part away from the channel d1 the escape of the oil will be prevented. The journal A has a spiral groove, a', formed in it running in such a direction as to take the oil as it ows in through the channeled1 and cause it to pass up to the upper end of the journal. At the upper end of the journal A the spiral groove a terminates in a rin g-groove, which should be drectly opposite the end of the'upper channel d2, so that the oil, after passing up through the spiral groove a', may ilow through the upper chaunel cl2 back into the oil-cup or reservoir D, to be again used.
By this construction the oil is introduced at the lower end of the journal and is carried up the entire length of said journal, oiling the entire surface of the bearing without any waste of oil, the surplus oil liowing back through the upper channel d2 into the oil-cup, to be again used.
This device is designed especially for use with vertical journals; but it may be employed with advantage with horizontal journals'.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The journal A having spiral groove a', and the iixedbearng B, removable bearing G having close oil-reservoir D and channels d1 cl2, and the end-grooved rod E, all constructed and arranged together as and for the purpose specified.
