To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. LILLY, a citizen of the United. States of America, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cut-Off Devices for Powder-Boxes, Medicine-Containers, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cut-ofi devices for powder boxes, medicine containers and the like and has particular application to a measuring cut-off device.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described which may be readily applied to any powder box or medicine container now 1n use and whereby the flow from the container will be automatically cut 05 after the determined quantity has been discharged.
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the class described which will be automatic in operation and which will embrace the desired features of simplicityfeiifihiency and durability coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture and marketing.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a powder container equipped with a measuring cut-ofi' device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the discharge spout of the powder container and the cutofi device thereon showing the parts in normal closed position. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts in the position they occupy when the powder is discharged. Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a powder container of any suitable or preferred construction. In the present instance, this powder container is provided with an upwardly extending discharge spout 2 by means of which the powder may be discharged from the container when the latter is inverted.
My improved cut-01f device 1s designated as an entirety at 3 and, in the present instance, comprises .a tube 4 designed to encircle the outer end of the spout 2 and of a cross sectional configuration corresponding to that of the spout. In this instance, the tube 4 is substantially rectangular in cross section owing to the spout 2 being of this shape, and journaled in the opposite end Walls of the tube 4 and lying adjacent to the inner face of one of the side wall thereof is a rod 5, while a cover plate 6 has one edge suitably secured to the rod 5. This cover plate is of cross and longitudinal dimensions slightly greater than the corresponding dimensions of the tube 4 so that when the cover plate is in closed position it will overlap the outer edge of the tube to effectively close the same. Also secured tothe rod 5 and extending into the thbe 1 1n a plane at right angles to the cover plate 6 is a cut-off plate 7 of transverse and longitudinal dimensions equal to those of the tube and normally lying against the ad; jacent side wall of the tube and adapted to be moved across the tube when the cover plate 6 is swung to open position. Secured to one end of the rod 5 and depending therefrom at an angle to the vertical is an arm 8 and connected with the lower end of the arm 8 is a weight 9.
In practice, the cover plate 6 normally extends across the tube 4 and so .closes the spout 2. When, however, it is desired to discharge a quantity of the powder from the container, the latter is inverted and in this movement of the container the weight 9 swings the arm 8 and rod 5 with the effect to move the cover plate 6 out of the path of the powder and the cut off plate 7 across the path of the powder. In this movement of the plates the quantity of powder between the same is discharged and the cutoff plate closes the tube 4, thereby preventing further discharge of the powder. When the position of the container is reversed the weight 9 again swings the arm 8 in the reverse direction and so reciprocates the cover plate and cut-off plate to normal positions so that the above operation may be repeated when the container is again inverted.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my improved measuring cut-off device will be readily apparent. It will be seen that when the container is inverted to discharge the contents thereof a predetermined quantity only of such contents is discharged. Although I have shown and described the device as particularly adapted for powder containers, I Wish it to be understood that the same is e ually applicable to liquid medicine containers and in practice the plates 6 and 7 may be so connected as to be capable of relative adjustment so that the quantity of material discharged from the container may be varied in accordancewith the circumstances of the particular case.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or routine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a tube angular in cross section, a rod journaled in said tube at one end thereof lying parallel with one of the walls of the tube, a
cover plate having one edge connected to said rod and normally lying across the adjacent end of the tube to close the latter, a cut-off plate connected to said rod and projecting into said tube normally parallel with the adjacent wall and arranged at right angles to said cover plate and movable across said tube in the movement of the cover plate to open position, an arm connected to one end of said rod and depending therefrom at an angle to the vertical and a weight on the free end of said arm acting to hold the cover plate and the cut-off plate in normal position and to swing the same out of such position when the tube is inverted.
