Description

PATENTEH AUG 8.1871
@ammi QFFICE.
RICHARD N. WATROUS, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO I-IIMSELF AND W. W. KELLOGG, 0F SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF DIES FOR FORNIING THE LIPS OF AUGER-EITS.
Spccication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,838, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD N. WATRoUs, of Elmira, in the county of Cheinung and State of New York, have invented a new and In'iproved Die for Forming the Lips and Heads of Angers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents an end view of my improved die for augers. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, oi' the same.
Similar letters of reference in dica-te correspondiu parts.
This invention has for its object so to improve the construction of dies for forming the lips and heads oi' angers that the same can easily be repaired in case the projecting pin breaks ofi', and that the diiiierent requisites of hardness can be imparted to the several parts. The invention consists in the application of a removable pintle to the die, whereby the stated objects can be fully atta-ined.
A in the drawing represents a block of steel suitable for the die required. It is so shaped at the striking-surice as to constitute the die for forming the lip and head of an auger. Into the striking-face ofthe die is bored a hole, preferably of slightly-conical form, into which is i11- serted a steel. pintle, B, of tapering form. At the end of the pintle B is formed the pin or projection a., which gives form to the inside ofthe lip or cut ofthe auger. A hole, b, is bored into the opposite end of the die to permit the removal of the pintle B, by the insertion of a rod through b.
The advantages of this arrangement are manifold. The die and pintle ca-n be tempered separately. The die, having to withstand the blow or pressure, must be very hard in order to be durable, while the pintle must have a springtemper to prevent breaking.
Should the projecting pin a break, which it is liable to do, a new pintle can be inserted without great cost, while heretofore the entire die would have to be made anew. .Both dies A C of a pair are or may be provided with such removable pintles, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in dies for swaging and forming auger-bits, the projection el on pintle B, made separate from the other parts oil the die and inserted in the die-block in the tapering' socket, and made removable therefrom in virtue of the holes b, as and for the purpose speciti ed.
