.1;- UGI Y eU' TURNER ear. LIFTER-V Specification of tettfs'riateai. I i 4: 1916.
Application net October 31, leis. Serial No. 798,544.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEON O. DYER, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Andover, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doughnut Turners and Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to kitchen and table articles and more specifically to a novel and useful device for turning and lifting doughnuts or like pastries.
An object of this invention is to construct a device for facilitating the handling of doughnuts or the like. during the cooking of the same, as it is well known to those skilled in this art that accidents very often occur during the cooking process of doughnuts and analogous pastries due to the handling of the same by forks, spoons and other inefficient devices.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily'understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my device, a part thereof being broken away.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention a handle 5 is provided which in the present instance is of the ordinary construction, being made of wood or any other suitable inexpensive heat insulating material, and having a ferrule 6 on the one end thereof.
Mounted in the handle 5, is the one end of my improved device 7 which in the present instance comprises an elongated rod, the handle engaging end thereof being of a cylindrical configuration in cross section, while the opposite end 8 thereof is rectangular in cross section in order to facilitate the turning of the doughnut or other pastry. The fiat end 8 of the device is preferably bent into a U-shaped configuration as indicated at 9, the free end of the U 10 being slightly curved outwardly from the body thereof for a purpose which will subsequently appear.
It is well known that doughnuts and the like are cooked in deep lard, which as be fore stated very often results in serious accidents, due to the splashing of the lard on the hands of the operator, when inefiicient devices are used for handling the doughnuts, either during the turning of the same or in lifting the doughnuts from the cooking receptacle in which the lard'is contained. In order to avoid such accidents,
this simple and efficient device has been pro vided the operation of which will follow.
The doughnuts after having been placed in deep lard or the like may be readily turned by inserting the U-shaped end 9 of the rod 7 beneath the doughnut, which we will assume is of a circular configuration, and which as is obvious may be readily turned by merely turning the handle 5 in either direction. while the same is embedded in the lard or the like. When it is desired to lift the doughnuts or the like from the lard. the curved end 10 of the U is inserted in the doughnut opening, allowing the same to slide on the arm of the U on which the curved end 10 is formed and down to the vertex thereof. It is of course obvious that a plurality of doughnuts may be lifted at one time if desired.
From the'foregoing it is evident that an eflicient yet simple device is constructed which comprises but few parts which may be readily associated for performing the de sired function, each of the parts being simple in construction so as to provide a device which will not only be durable but one which may be manufactured at a minimumcost.
Tt will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various 'minor changes in detail of construction, pro- Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A means to facilitate manipulation of articles in heated liquid, including a rod, one end of Which is laterally ofiset in U-shaped configuration to provide a base for the aron said rod, remote from said U-shaped base, to preclude possibility of injuring the person of the user. a

ticle, and flattened to reduce possibility of Witnesses: casual displacement of the article, from said CHARLES EBB, base to a minimum, and a handle mounted INA M. DYER.
