H. U. ROGNESS.
SCREW.
- APPLIC .10, 1914- 1,17Z810u Patented Apr; 4, 1916.
WfilllllllPf/JX HELGE U. ROGNESS, 0F SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA.
SCREW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 10, 1914. Serial No. 861,122.
To all a 'homz't may concern:
Be it known that I, HELGE U. RocNEss,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screws, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to screws and more particularly to threaded screws, and has for its object the provision of a screw of this character that will make a tight joint, and which can not work loose nor be removed after it has been properly placed without gestroying the screw or the-material secured y it.
A further object of my invention is to provide a screw which may be employed not only in fastening together sheet metal such as is usually riveted together, but also metal to wood and wood to wood.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be pointed out or made apparent in the following description thereof and the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters in the several views designate similar parts.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of my improved screw oining two sheets of metal, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are similar views showing modified forms of the screw head, Fig. 5 is a sectional view of my screw on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The shank 1 tapers to a point, 2, and has a spiral thread, 3, terminating at the lower end of the neck, 4, on which is mounted a head, 5, in which is a groove, 6, to receive a screw driver or similar tool for working it into place. The point 2 is blunt or rounded at its extremity which requires making a round hole through the material to be joined, sufficiently large to receive the thread at approximately its narrowest portion. This thread 3 formed with a rela tively broad flange terminates at the lower end of the neck 4 in a flat surface which has substantially the same diameter from edge to edge as the head of the screw. The neck 4 is of the same diameter at its lower end as the shank 1 which begins its taper where the upper end of the thread stops.
In Fig. 2 the screw differs from that shown in Fig. 1 only in the head which is hexagonal and adapted for the use of a wrench or other means where more force than is usually exerted With a screw driver is required.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the head is of the well I known wood screw formation and is designed for use with wood or where it is desired to counter-sink the head. In Fig. 4 the neck is of greater length than that shown in the other figures of the drawings and shows the. use of the screw in. fastening sheet metal and wood together.
The operation of my invention is as follows: A round hole having been made through the material in which the screw is to be used the small end of the shank is insorted in the hole and the screw then forced or screwed down until the entire thread is 1 through the material when the neck, if of proper length, will fill the hole to the'exclusion of air and water, and the head of the screw and the broad flange of the upper end of the thread will clamp the parts firmly together and the diameter of the flange or thread at the upper end and the diameter of the head of the screw being greater than the diameter of the hole -or neck the screw can not work out or loosen.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that my improved screw may be used for many purposes in addition to fastening two or more sheets of metal together; that it may be used in fasteningwood and metaltogether, such as securing'wood on the metal frame of an automobile, or attaching upholstery directly to the metal work; also that it can be used in all cases where only one side of the material is accessible, and for I PatentedApr. 4, 1916. I
plugging sealed apparatus, such as hot water boilers, gasometers, etc., and in fact all kinds of ordinary work such as cornices, gutters and sheet metal construction generally. 1
-Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A screw having a head and a neck, said head having a fiat under surface, and a taperingthreaded shank, the thread on said shank terminating in a flange adjacent the lower end of said neck, said flange being of j the same diameter as said head. i
2. A screw having a head and a neck, a threaded shank tapering from the lower end of said neck, said shank at the junction of said neck and said shank at the base of the thread being of the same diameter as said neck, and the upper end of said thread forming a flange at said junction of the neck and the shank.
3. A screw having a head with a slot therein, a neck, a tapered shank, and a spiral thread on said shank, said thread beginning at approximately the point of said shank and terminating at said neck in a flat surface, said thread having a sharp edge; the diameter of said shank and said thread at the point of contact with said neck 10 being substantially the same as the diameterof said head. e
- In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses" HELGE U. ROGNESS.
