To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN M. MADIGAN and DANIEL C. SMITH, citizens 'of the United States of America, and residents of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sawing Slots in Lasts, of which the following is a specification. p I
This invention relates to machines for sawing slots in the fore parts and heel parts of lasts, and has for its object the production of a device of this character in which the parts of the last may be accurately positioned during the slot cutting operation, and in which the work may be moved upwardly in relation to'the slot cutting member during the operation of the latter.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and 'to the claims hereinafter given.

The member 22 is provided with a shoulder 24 which is adapted to coact with the lower face of the block 20 to limit the 26, a work supporting plate 27. Near its upper end'the plate 27 is provided with a slot 28 extending therethrough on each side of which is .a positioning rib 29. The plate 27 has'secured to its front face at its upper I endtwo parallel strips 30 having ears 31 thereon to which is pivoted a U-shaped member 32 having centrally disposed therein a tubular hub 33 in-which is mounted a reciprocating member 34 having 'a. pin 35 therein extending through a slot 36 in the I hub 33 to prevent said member 3-1 from ro- The' U-shaped' member 32 also carries an adjusting member 37 the inner end of which is threaded to the member 34. This member 37 is provided with a collar 38 interposed between the U-shaped member 3 1 and a bar 39 secured thereto, thereby preventing any end movement of the member 37. s
The machine shown in the drawings and herein described is intended especially for cutting slots in the fore part and heel part 'of' a particular kind of transversely divided lasts in the construction of which a cylindrical hole is bored upwardly from thebottom of the last and is then transversely divided on the axis ofsaid cylindrical hole. When the last is transversely divided the adjacent spaces of the heelandtoe parts thereof will each have a semi-cylindrical groove therein extending part way toward the top of the last. This semi-cylindrical hole serves to register the toe part or heel part of the last on the work support, the shoulder at the upper end of the semi-cylindrical groove resting upon the forwardly extending ribs 29 formed upon the work supporting plate 27. These ribs" 29 are curved to fit thes'emi-cylindrical groove in 1 the toe and heel parts of the last, as shown in section in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When either the toe part or heel part of the last is thus positioned upon the ribs 29,the.U- shaped member 32 is brought'into the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and then'the member 37 is rotated to force the forked end of the clamping member 34 against the comb of the toepart or-the rear end of the heel part, thereby clamping the part to be slotted securely against the member 43 secured to the under face of the bench or other support 10. This rod 42is provided with a projecting flange 44 between which and the bearing 43 is a spring.

When the slot is being cut into the toe part or'heel part of a last, the work supporting plate with thepart of the last thereon is moved toward the frame 12, the saw 16 entering the slot 28 in the worksupporting plate 27 and cuts the required slot in-the work support on said plate.
If it is desired to cut the slot downwardly through the bottom of the last, this may be accomplished by'depressing the treadle 51 while the saw is rotated, thus moving the work upwardly relatively to the rotating saw. During the rotation of the saw and when it is not being used upon the workthe work supporting plate 27 is always in front of the saw'and prevents the handsaof the workman from coming into contact therewith, the spring 45 being sti'ii enough to prevent accidental rearward movemen p The weight of the slide 19 will the work supporting plate 27. When the work is mounted upon the plate the opersator forces the plate with the work thereon into contact with thesaw, and while the operation is being performed, the teeth of the rotating saw are embedded in the workitself, and any accidental cutting of the operators hands is effectually prevented. This makes a very simple and efi'ective device for cutting the slots in the toe and heel parts of lasts, .andwhile the slot in each part is cut independently of the other, owing to the two parts of the last being registered uponv the .samework supporting ribs," the slots out are I always in alinement when the toe andheel parts-are assembledin the finished last. g
It is believedthat the many advantagesof thisiinvention will be fully apparent from the foregoing description.
Having thus described our lnvention, we claim:
1. A machine for forming agrooveor 'mortise in a work blank having a recessin one face, comprising arotary'cutter, a plate pivoted toswing toward and from the cutter on an-axis in orparallelto the plane of the :plate and having a slotto receive the cutter and ribs on the edges of saidslot adaptedfto fitthe above-mentioned recess in thework;

Cutter on an axis in or parallel to the plane of the plate and having a slotto receive the cutter andribs on the edges of said slot adapted to fit the above-mentioned recess in the work blank; and clamping means pressing'the work toward the plate and upon said ribs, said clampingmeans consisting in part of a nonrevoluble slidable member having a forked end adapted to engage the work blank. 7
