Description

J. W. CAIRNS. PAINT CAN STIRRING ATTACHMENT.
' APPLICATION FILED NOV. 17, 1915.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR fg @7272 W 0x257 7251 4 M mzfm MW THE COLUMBIA PuujuuRAPlt co., WASHINGTON, II. c.
JOHN W. CAIRNS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PAINT-CAN STIFRING ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lIar. 28, 1916.
Application filed November17, 1915. Serial No. 61,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. CAIRNS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paint-Can Stirring Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment to paint and like cans containing heavy semifluid substances which it may be desirable to agitate in order to prevent the heavier portions from separating and settling to the bottom of the can.
It consists ofa transversely disposed and journaled shaft having radiating arms projecting and fitting the curvature of the can bottom and detachable exterior means by which the shaft may be oscillated or turned so that the contained materials may be kept in a properly mixed condition.
It also consists in details of construction, which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a can, showing the interior and my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stirring arms. Fig. 3 is a view of the'operating handle.
As shown, A is a can or receptacle adapted to contain paint or other substance, the ingredients of which are liable to settle and separate when the container remains long in one position. Preferably my can is formed cylindrical and with a bottom which is concave interiorly, as at 2.
3 is a shaft extending across the can and journaled in its sides, as at 4 near the bottom.
5 are arms or blades projecting from the shaft. In the present case these arms are flat, tapering and paddle-shaped, and may be made of varying length so as to conform to the segmental or curved form of the bottom of the can, near to which their ends approach.
To allow the cans to be conveniently packed for shipment, the journals 4 are formed within the can and the outer ends Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents.
'One of the journaled ends of the shaft 3 may be formed with a notch 7 or equivalent means to receive the tongue 8 of the arm 9. This is applicable when the protecting plate 6 has been removed and by turning the shaft, the arms will agitate and stir the mass and keep it in proper condition for use.
The coverof the can 10 is removable to expose the interior for use when required and the contents may be stirred and kept in condition for use, as described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a can having a fiat lower end and a concave bottom'and having alined openings formed in its opposite sides, a shaft having reduced ends turnable in said openings and having radial paddles thereon, one of said reduced shaft ends having a slot therein and each of said shaft ends terminating substantially flush'with the respective sides of the can, a key having a part engageable in' said shaft slot, and relatively thin metal plates secured to the can sides and extending over the shaft ends to'normally conceal the latter and to enable exposure of the slotted end of the shaft upon removal of the corresponding plate.
2. In combination with a can having alined openings formed in its opposite sides, a shaft having its ends turnable in said openings, said shaft having paddles thereon and having each of its ends extending substantially flush with the respective sides of the can, one of said shaft ends having a keyreceiving slot, and a relatively thin metal plate secured to the can side and disposed over said slotted shaft end, said plate being removable so as to expose said slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN IV. CAIRNS. Witnesses:
