To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. BoLIcK and MANUEL T. HARTson, citizens of the United States, residing at Nest Hickory, in
the county of Catawba and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Replacers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car replacers such as are used for replacing derailed engines and cars upon the rails.
The invention has for its object to produce a ,replacing device of simple and inexpensive construction by the use of which derailed engines and cars may be quickly replaced, said device embodying inclined planes to produce the requisite lifting action, a guard rib to crowd the wheels in the direction of the rails and a supporting flange having its top face inclined in the direction of the rails so that the crowding of the wheels in the direction of the rails will be facilitated and assisted by the weight of the wheels, trucks and superposed parts.
A further object of the invention is to produce a replacing device of simple and inexpensive construction which may be conveniently .carried on an engine or car for emergency use.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of 40 the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited,
but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may 45 be resorted to when desired.

flange 2101 a wheel posed of the members A and B, the former of which is placed outside the rail while the member B is placed between the rails.
The member A is composed of a base plate 15 formed with an upwardly extending flange 16 the'ends of which are beveled to form inclined planes 17, while the top face'of said flange is beveled downwardly in the direction of the rail 18, said beveled top face being indicated at 19. Clamp bolts 20 are provided whereby the base plate is securely connected with the rail. It will be observed that the upstanding flange 16 is formed at a suitable distance from the edge of the base plate that contacts with the rail so as to be capable of admitting the W between the rail head and the flange 16.
The member B is composed of a base plate 22 which is equipped with clamp bdlts 23 wherebv it may be connected with the rail 2-1. The base plate 22 is provided with a flange 25 lying adjacent to the head of the rail 24 and abutting throughout its length on said rail, said flange having beveled ends forming inclined planes 26, and said flange being tapered from the ends in the direction of its central portion. so as to produce an arcuate wall or side face 26 upon the side distant from the rail with which the memberB'is connected. The base plate 22 is also provided with an upwardly extending rib 27 which is spaced 'from the arcuate wall of the flange 25, said rib being curved or arcuate so that the face thereof 27' which is opposed to the flange 25 will approximately correspond with the curvature of the side wall of said flange. The top face of the rib 27 is' preferably inclined downwardly from the rail 24 with which the member B is connecte 4 In operation the treads 28, 28' of the wheels W, W will ride on the inclined planes 17. 26 of the flanges 16, 25, respectively. The flange 16 of the wheel W will be guided between the flange 16 and the proximate rail head but will graduallv rise to the level of the face of the rail head. In the meantime, the flange 21 of the wheel W will be crowded by the arcuate rib 27 in the direction of the rail 2ai-until the narrowest portion of thetapering flange 25 is reached, bywhich time the Wheels will havev become replaced upon the rails. The operation, as will be seen, is very simple and may be easily and successfully carried out.
The members A- and B of the improved replacing deyice may be-formed by castingor otherwise in any convenient manner, each.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new; is
A replacing device comprising two members, one ofwhiclh,'A, base base plate 15 provided witha longitudinal flange 16 the en'dsofavhich are beveled to form inclined member adjacent to a railroad rail with the edge of the base plate abutting on the rail flange, the flange 16 being positioned in spaced relation to the rail head for the passage of a wheel flange therebetween. the
other member, B, having a base plate 22, an
upstanding flange25 with a straight side abutting throughout the greater portionof its length on the rail adjacent to which the member is'secured, said flange having a curved outer side wall26; and an upwardly extending flange or rib 27 rising from the base plateinspaced relation tothe arcuate wall 26 of the flange 25, said rib 27 being curved so that the side wall 27 thereof is opposed to the curved wall 26 of the flange 25 and will be spaced equally therefrom throughout the length thereof, and said rib 27 having beveled ends forming inclined planes, and a top face which is beveled downwardly from the rail adjacent to which the member B is secured.
