tape ismounted upon a shaft 8 jou'rnal'ed lin'the sides of a housing 9 suitably secured to the top of the reservoir 1, said housing having a sight-window 10. therein, in order that the indicia' on said tape may be discernible asmost clearly shown in Fig. 3.
-The reference-numeral 11 designates an 7 air valve provided for the purpose of introducing air pressure into the receptacle 1 above the piston which piston is adapted to the piston 2 to act thereupon and force the material through said tube, the amount or quantity of the material thus supplied being indicated by the metal tape 7 which is unwound from the shaft 8 by downward movement of the piston. When it is desired to refill the receptacle 1, it is only necessary to remove the bottom 3 and to insert the desired amount of grease.
The foregoing arrangement is extremely compact by reason of the utilization of a 'metal' tape which occupies a "minimum amount of space within the small housing on top of the receptacle, and it very ade: quately performs theregistering function for my special arrangement.
As is usually desired, locking means for rendering the-apparatus inoperative may be provided and in this instance it consists of the formation of the shaft 8 with an extension 8 projecting laterally from the housmg 9 a desirable distance. 'The extension has its bearing in a bracket 13 secured to the housing 9 and said bracket performs a dual function. This bracket 13 abuts with a shoulder 8 on the shaft extension adjacent to a suitable bushingll, in said shaft, and
acts to hold said shaft in. proper position in its bearings with a view to preventing any leakage of air pressure fromthe receptacle. In addition the bracket is provided with a passage 13 extending transversely of its .outer bearing extremity and the extension 8' of the shaft is formed with an opening 15 therein which is adapted to register with the passage 13' so that a lock member 16 or other desirable means may be inserted therethrough for rendering the shaft inoperable. The, lock aforesaid is conventionally shown as any locking means may be employed for this purpose of rendering the unauthorized use of the apparatus impracticable. The endof the shaft extension 8 is squared as shown in the drawing so that a crank 17 or similar means may be connected thereto for rotating the shaft to wind up the metal tape and thereby raise the piston 2 when desired. v
As will be observed particularly by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing, the shaft 8 is disposed slightly to one side of the center of the receptacle so as to maintain the metallic tape 7 in substantially a true vertical plane throughout the revolution of said shaft in the movement of the piston 52.
It will be apparent that slight changes in the details of construction, and arrangement of the parts in this apparatus may be made without departing from the spirit of the in-- .vention, and within the scope of the appended claims.

3. In an apparatus of the class described for dispensing grease or the like, the combination with a reservoir, a piston operable therein, a shaft rotatably mounted on the reservoir, a flexible support member intermediate the shaft' and piston and adapted tobe wound upon said shaft and alsounwound, bracket means preventing displacement of said shaft, and locking means for interlocking the shaft with the last-mentiolned means to .render the piston inoperab e.
