Description

ma? mm Mmmm @XMK ,mm AUG 1187i UNITED STATES Y PATENT OFFICE.
ALBION K. IJ. VALKER, OF RICHMOND, MAINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,703, dated August 1, 1871.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBION K. l. WALKER, of Richmond, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Vheel-Ohucks; and I do4 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a face view of chuck foundation. Fig. 2 is a face view of chuck-follower. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my improved chuck.
This invention has relation to an improved chuck for watchmakers7 lathes; and consists in the construction of said chuck so as to enable the whecl or other device to readily find its center and beheld securely therein without the use of shellac or celnent.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention as adapted to be used with the split spring-chuck of the American lathe, but with slight modification it is applicable to all other watchmakers lathes in general use.
A designates a disk, holding two screws, a a, opposite each other. B indicates a corresponding from.
opposite each other in the disk B.v E E are corresponding central apertures in both disks.
A wheel is arran ged by being placed 011 the foundation disk A, as shown in Fig. 1, and the followerer placed over it, the screw -heads passing through the eyes D and the follower is turned around so as to hold the shank of the screw in the slots D. In this way the springs O press slightly against the face ofthe wheel, merely holding it in place. The foundation A is now placed in the split spring-chuck of the lathe, which, being started, the wheel is made to center itself perfectly by placing the thumb-n ail or anything else against the pivot. When worked to a perfect center the screws are to be tightened up so as to hold the wheel irmly.
All the wheels that can be chueked in the common split sprin g-chuck can be as Well chueked in my device, and all the Watch-wheels and balances that are ordinarily chueked with shellac or cement can be ch ucked in a much more satisfactory manner.
I claim as my invention- The centering device for watch-wheels, consisting of the plat-e A, the follower B, and the friction-springs O O, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBION K. P. VALKER.
