iorni comp; u this specification. I
O invention rcla' to improvements 11'1 draft yow ailway ear 'ai't rigging.
The object of our invention is, to provide a draft yoke having means for readily detaching the from, and it to a draw liar.
20 in this c on, Figure 1 is a 11 f a draft yoke and draw bar exts dy ing our invention; Fig. 2 is a thereoi; Fig. o is a central tudinal section the friruwvi end of yoke and the draw bar ext. .J' on, showing the butt of the draw in en agcment with the draw bar extension; "Fig. 1 is a cross scction taken on line i t of Fig. 2; Fig, 5 is a cross section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
lleferring to the drawings the numeral 6 indicates a draw bar, only he rear end thereof being shown in the drawing. having a butt and provided with the usual vertical rivet hole. The draw bar is provided with a transverse slot 1 to receive the coupler key 10.
The numeral ll represents a draw bar etc tension comprising the shank 12 and the head 13. The head 13 contains a forwardly opening hollow recess 14 adapt. to receive the draw bar. The rear Wall o. the recess 15 is preferably engaged by the rear face 16 of the draw baris butt. The lateral walls 17--17 forming the said recess are provided with transverse slots 18-18 registering with the slot in the draw bar, and receiving the coupler key 10. The upper and lower walls 19 and respectii ly, forming the said rc- 14 are provided with registering per forations QL-Ql alined with the vertical rivetliole in the draw in r to receive the bolt 22, which is provided at its upper end with the head and receives the nut 24 and the nut-lock 25 at its lower end. The
the
said bolt passes through a notch or opening :26 in the key 10, said opening or notch being preferably located on the rear edge of said key. T he bolt 2-2 serves to prevent accidental displacement of the coupler key 10. At its rear end the draw bar extension is provided with a vertical, preferably round opening 27 to receive the preferably cylindrical vertical key therethrmigh The dra ft yoke 29 comprises an upper limb 30, a invrer limh 81, a rear, preferably intc ral connecting member between said limos, and a preferably integral head 33 joining the ward ends. A reinforcing median rib 34 extends longitudinally around the outer faces of the limbs 00 and 31 and connecting member of the yoke, the said reinforcing rib being preferably integral with the said limbs and rear connecting member. The head 33' of the yoke has a forward opening 35 adapt' ed to receive the shank 12 of the draw bar extension 11. The lateral walls 36-36 forming said opening are preferably integi al with the limbs of the yoke, and are forwardly outwardly flared, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to permit lateral movement of the draw bar extension in reference to the yoke. The upper and lower limbs of the yoke are provided at their forward ends with the in-turned gibs 3838 having preferably integral rearwardly extending spaced-apart lugs 3939 between which are received the ends of therkey 2 8. The lugs 39--39 form flanges on the inner faces of the limbs of the yoke, preferably mounted in line with the edges of a limb of the yoke and-integral therewith.
In rearward movement of the draw bar, the draw bar extension is moved rear'wardly to compress any suitable compression resisting member which may be mounted in the transverse opening 40 in the draft yoke. In such movement, the key 28 slides rearvvardly in the slots formed between the members 39-39, and somewhat back of its extreme rearward movement. The lower limb of the. yoke is provided with a vertical opening 41 adapted for the passage of the key 28. In connecting the draw bar extension 11 to the draft yoke, the said ektens sion is inserted in the forwardppening of the "eke and IHOVHTIQfiIWZlIdlY until'the ve l open ng 27 therethrough registers with the opening 41 in the lower limb ofthe yoke, whereupon the key 28 is inserted into two limbs together at their forthrough osition, and the draw ba'r extension drawn orwardly, drawing the key 28 into its operative position in the slots formed between the members 39-39. In disconnecting the draw bar extension from the yoke, the draw bar extension is moved rearwardly until the key 28 registers with the opening 41 in the yoke, and if the key 28 does not readily drop said opening it may be forced therethrough by means of a punch driven through the registering opening 42 in the upper limb 30 of the draft yoke. On forward movement of the draw bar, the yoke is drawn forwardlyby the engagement of the key 28 against the lugs 38-38 at the forward ends of the limbs of the yoke, and forming the forward end of the slots between the members We claim;-
In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, a yoke,
a coupler member and a removable pin extending through said member, said yoke at its forward end having front vertical walls between which the rear end of said member is adapted to extend, the inner faces of the upper and lower walls of said yoke being longitudinally slotted to receive the ends of said pin, said pin in the normal position of the parts being retained at the forward ends of said slots, said upper and lower Walls of the yoke being pro ided also with alined perfo rations located to the rear of the normal position of said pin, one of said recesses being sufiiciently enlarged to permit the removal of said pin therethrough.
