MACHINE FOR SETTING EYELETS OR THE. LIKE.
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, ROBERT B. SMITH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State or the like,'of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,'is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like partsin the several figures. V
This invention relates to machines for setting eyelets or other fastening devices insheet material and particularly to that class of machine having punching devices arranged to'perforate' the work and cooperating. setting devices arranged to insert viously punched hole.
An object of this invention is to provide a machine having an improved organization and arrangement of instrumentalities.
To this end an important feature of the invention consists in the combination with a punch of a sectional punching die movable relatively to the punch with its sections locked together to efiect the punching operation, and setting dies relatively movable to insert and clencha fasteneigin the work so punched. The provision. of locking means for the sectional die insures the maintenance of the complete contour of the die when the punching operation takes place and consequently and. clench an eyelet or the like in the piein a punching and fastener setting machine forate the work and for holding the die having a sectional punching die of which the sections are arranged for independent adjustment. the accurate positioning of the parts in assembling the machine and permits compensation for wear or convenient adjustment for other purposes while the machine is in use.

against further longitudinal movement. As herein shown, this mechanism includes a crank and link connection disposedto reach a dead point at the conclusion of the punch- .ing'operation and so hold the die against furthermovement upon the punch.
The lnvention also contemplates the employment, 111 a punching and fastener setting machine, of a carrying member for the punching die which member is provided with ways for a movable separating device for the die sections. This arrangement is advantageous from a'structural standpoint slnce the ways may be formed in the carrymg member more easily than they could be formed in the interior of the machine frame.
Stillanother feature'of the invention consists in a punching and fastener setting machine having a work table or plate located in a position wherein itssurface is substantially flush with the sections of the punching die when the latter is in its initial position. Such construction affords a continuous supporting surface upon which the work may be moved in all direction and located with accuracv for the reception of the fastener.
Other features of the invention, including importantcombinations of parts and details of design and construction, will be hereinafter more specifically described and Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the working parts of the machine as located prior to the punching operation, the work table being re moved; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the working parts as located after the punching operation; Fig. 4 is a view in perspective showing the operating connections of the lower setting ie and the punching die; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the work table.
Beforeproceeding to a detailed descrip tion of the machine it will be convenient to state briefly its mode of operation and the general arrangement of its working parts.
The machine comprises a frame 9. carrying a stationary punch 4; and upsetting die 6. Mounted in the frame 2 for movement most convenient for an operator.
upper branch or aw of the frame is ad usttoward and'away from said punch t is a sectional punching die comprising'the plates 10 normally located in the plane of the work table 62 upon which the work to be eyeleted is placed. 'When the treadle rod is actuatedthe die plates are raised through suitable toggle mechanism and the work is forced against the punch and perforated. During this operation the lower setting die, which is located beneath the punching die,
has-extracted an eyelet from the raceway 38 and immediately after the punching operation the sections of the die plate are separated by a wedge bar 27 and the. lower setting die emerges carrying the eyelet which is threaded on the punch 4, forced through the work and finally clenched against the upsetting die 6. The lower setting die is then retracted and the sections of the die plate are moved together and downwardly thus allowing the eyeleted work to be removed from the punch. v
The frame 2 of the machine is of suitable shape to, support the working parts at a slight forward inclination to the vertical which arrangement has been found to be the In the ably mounted a normally stationary punch ing and upsettmg device comprismg the centrally disposed punch 4E and annular upsetting die 6. These devices may be adjusted in any preferred manner, for example, by
means of an adjusting nut '7, and a set screw 8 is provided for locking them in any adjustable position. The end of the punch 4 is made square except for a small central 'projection .9 which serves to force the punching through the die plate.
The die which cooperates with the punch 4 is formed by two plates 10 in each of which is formed a recess which constitutes one half of the die. The contacting edges of the plate are cut away except adjacent the die-forming recesses in order to insure a more perfect fitting together of the plates;
I Each of the plates 10 is adjustably mounted 12 each consist in a transversely extending V in a holder 12, being slotted for the recep tionfof the screws 11," and by loosening these screws opportunity is afforded for shifting the plates 10 to bring the recesses into regis, ftration or to bring the die so formed into alinement with the punch 1. The holders portion and a downwardly extending shank which is pivoted by a pin 13 to the plate 14 forming part of a square plunger 16. The upper surfaces of the holders 12 are re cessed so as to receive the die plate 10 with their, upper surfaces substantially flush with r the surfaces of the holders, in this way form ing a substantially continuous work sup porting surface when the die is in operative position. The inner facesof the shanks of each holder are beveled ofi-below the pivots 13 in order to allow the lower ends to approach each other as the upper portions of the holders are swung away from eachother and acompression spring 18 is located between lowerends of the holders which serves normally to maintain the holders with the die plates in operative relation. "A. stop pin or stud 20, extending through the plate 14 and into the inner wall of the plunger 16 is arranged to fit into recesses formed in the adjacent faces of the holders l2. and deter mlne independently vthe operative position of each holder, the holders being maintained in engagement spring 18. r I V A locking clamp 22 is provided forpositively locking together the holders .until with. the -.pin 20 bythe after the punching operation. The clamp comprises two side pieces, arranged to engage frictionally with Q the sides .of the holders 12, and a connecting plate to which is rigidly secured a downwardly projecting T-shaped member 28 the head of which is received in a correspondingly shaped slot 24: in the'frame'of the machine. The arrangement issuch that as the plunger 16 isfl elevated carrying theholders 12 toward the;
punch 4, the clamp 22 is carried up with the holders until the head of the T shaped member 23 engages the top of the slot 24 which occurs after the punchingjdie' has.
beenforced on the punch ffor a snliicient distance to punch a clean hole in jthework. The upwardinovement of the plungergcon tinues, however and the holders then fslide.
point 27 is mounted for reciprocation in 7 ways formed in the plunger 16 and is. con
In order to separate 7 the holders and I i nected with actuating means which elevate it at the time when the plunger has rcached its highest po nt and is locked against further movement. by. the links of itsstraightened actuating toggle 56, 58.1 when the bar 26 is elevated its wedge shaped end is forced between the horizontally extendslightly rounded at'their adjacent lower 'ing portions of the holders 12,"whi'ch are edges in order to allow the wedge to enter between them; thus causing them to separate and move apart. y V
A, cylindrical plunger 30 is mounted for reciprocation in the lower jaw of the frame in alinement with the stationary punchand ups'ettingdie 6, and carries the adjustably mounted lower setting die which is pro vided with a yieldin glymounted center spindle 34c-for the purpose of extracting an eyelet from thedelivery end of the raceway and carrying it to the upsetting die. At its lower end the plunger 30 isforked and connected with a link 36 forming apart of the actuating toggle to be described hereinafter.
The raceway 38 is supported on levers 40 and 42 which are pivoted to the frame. at 43 and 4%. The lever 42 has two spaced rollers arranged to be engaged by the upper and lower engagingfaces of an arm 47 which projects from the rear side of the toggle link 36. In normal position the delivery end of the raceway 38 standsin the path of the center spindle 34, such position being regulated by the adjustable stop 48 which encounters an abutment on a rearwardly projecting arm of the. lever 42..
When the arm 47 is moved upwardly its upper engaging face acts upon the upper of the. two rolls carried'by the lever 42 and moves the raceway rearwardly, after the plunger 30 has been elevated. slightly to cause the spindle 34. to impale the lower-- most eyelet in the raceway. Thelowermost eyelet is thus drawn out of the raceway and the latter moved to an inoperative position. On downward movement ofthe arm 47 the lower engaging face acts on'the lower roller of the lever42 and moves the raceway forwardly to its normal position. The mechanism above described for operating the raceway is substantially similar to that disclosed and claimed in United States Patent No.
898,729 granted September '15, 1908 to J. F. Davey. i
The working parts of the machine are actuated by a treadle rod 50 through a lever 52 and a system of toggle links- Of these, the link 37 is pivoted to the inner end of the lever 52 and link 36 is pivoted to the lower end of the plunger 30, as shown in Fig. at. A radius link 54 .fast to the rock shaft 55 is pivotally connected to the knuckle of the toggle and serves to guide itsmoti on in an are about the rock shaft as center. The rock shaft55 projects through one side of the frame and on its outerend is provided 'with'a crank arm'56 which is connected with the squared plunger 16 through the medium of a link 58 and stud 59. Another link 60 is also pivoted to the knuckle of the toggle 36, 37 and this link is connected with and actuates the separating bar 26.
The toggle and the various connecting links are so proportioned and arranged that, on downward movement of the treadle rod 50 the plunger 16, the bar 26 and the plunget 30 are'all' elevated at about the same rateat first. The arm 56 and link 58, which it will be observed,-constitute an independ' ent toggle in themselves, are soon brought into alinement and the upward movement 7 of theholdersl2i-and punching die therethe rear end of the raceway fore ceases. The upward movement of the bar 26 and plunger 30, however, continues ment and this latter movement, as already explained, results first in the separation of the halves of the punching die and then in the setting movement of the lower setting die.
The treadle-rod 50 is moved upwardly to retract the plungers by a spring, not shown, and is limited in this movement by an adjustable stop 51 on the lever 52 which engages with a fixed abutment on the frame of the machine. On the upward movement of the treadle rod 50 the lower setting die 32 and the rod 26 are quickly retracted and the holders 12 are allowed to close under the actuation of the spring 18. During this movement the toggle 56, 58 is on or near its dead point and accordingly little or no movement is transmitted to the plunger 16 until the lower setting die and the separator bar16have been retracted.
A hopper for eyelets is mounted upon 38 and is provided withan agitator of any usual type preferably a brush having a downwardly 6X tending spindle upon which is fastened a forked arm 71 which engages a stationary stud 72 on the frame of the machine. It will be seen that as the raceway and hopper 7 O are moved back and forth the arm 71 and consequently the agitating brush will be oscillated and the eyelets will be brushed out through the delivery ports to the raceway.
A work plate 62'is mounted on the front of the frame 2 by means of an angle bracket 64 and is arranged to surround the punching die plates and form a continuous surface therewith when the latter are in their lowermost position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. At the rear of the punching die the work plate is slotted and a gage 66 is adjustably mounted in said slot by the aid of which the position of the Work with respect to the punch made be accurately determined. Other gages may be provided if it is desired to locate the work with a greater degree of accuracy.
Inthe foregoing description the rod 56 has been described, for the sake of clearness. as a treadle rod, but it will'be obvious that it is immaterial. by what means this rod is actuated and it is within the scope of the invention to drive the machine from any desired source of power. It will also be apparent that, with slight modifications in cletail, the machine may be adapted for setting other fasteners than eyelets, such as lacing hooks, rivets, studs, or similar articles. The employment of the machine for setting such articles is contemplated by the present invention and is within the scopethereof.
