Application filed J une 5, 1915. Serial No. 32,467.
Toall 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, JOHN BROMET, FRANK THORMAN, and HENRY CLAYTON WOOD, subjects of the King of Great Brittain and Ireland, residing at Tadcaster, 1n the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Drying Sewage-Sludge. and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in apparatus for drying sewage sludge and the'like, being an improvement in or modification of4 the invention described and claimed in the specification of our prior Patent No. 1,153,192, dated Sepamber 14th, '1915.
Our present improvements relates more to the breaking up of the material during its passage through and from the heated rotating cylinders, and for this purpose our invention consists essentially in the provision of internal and external rollers as hereinafter described, su`ch rollers-to be used either alone or in conjunction. with the Scrapers, lifting vanes, and teeth described in our said prior specification. l Description of drawzngs.-Figure 1` isa longitudinal sectional elevation of a drying apparatus of the type described in our said prior specification and having our presv arrangement of the external rollers.
The internal roller or rollers A are designed to` crush or flatten the material against the inside of the cylinder B and so bring a large surface of the material into contact with the `heated plates ofthe cyl-v inder and with the hot air circulated through the cylinder. The said' rollers A may be fitted at any desired point or points in the rotating cylinder, but they are preferablyfitted singly within the feed end of the cylinder (see Fig. l) so that the wet material is rolled into a thin sheet asv soon as it enters the cylinder, and thus it is possible to effectively dry lumpy material such as sewage sludge, which if dried quickly in that 'condition is burnt on the outside of 'the lumps while the inside is untouched by the heat. The said internal rollers A are attached to the ends of lever arms C, the other ends of which are hinged from brackets D fixed to the internal girder E which the rotating cylinder. Attached to Athe roller arms C is a fixed scraper H (see Fig. 3) for removing any material Whichmay adhere to the roller, any material adhering i to the cylinder being removed by the fixed -with as large a surface of the material as is possible, the rollers at the outlet end of the lowest cylinder being used to crush the dried product to powder. These external rollers I are fixed in pairs across the air boxes -J inclosing the ends of the cylinders, and in a lconvenient position to receive the material discharged fromthe rotating cylinder above, this discharge being facilitated by means of a guide chute 'Il The rollers I are rotated in opposite directions by suitably driven Vgear wheels or pulleys L; one of the rollers may have fixed shaft bearings M, and the other roller of each pair may have self-adjustingv spring shaft bearings N (O being the springs) so that carries the fixed scraper F and teeth G. The rollers A are thus free to rise and fall when the material is passing between them and any hard substance in the material can pass the rollers without damaging or clogging them. These rollers I may be of equal or unequal diameters and be driven at the same or different speeds as may be found most effective in dealing with various kinds of material.' And one of each pair of rollers is preferably provided with end flanges P.
We claim: v1. In drying apparatus of the heated rotating cylinder type having internal and external rollers, mounting and clearing devices for the internal roller' or rollers A, comprising, in combination, fixed internal girder E, brackets D, hinged lever arms C, and scraper H, substantially as herein set forth. l
- 2. In drying apparatus of the heated rotating cylinder type having internal and external rollers, mounting devices for the paired external rollers I, comprising, in combination, oppositely driven roller shafts, fixed bearings M for one of said shafts,
and self-adjusting bearings N` having 10 springs O for the other shaft, substantially as herein set forth.
