To all 'uhom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. BURK- I-nxri'r, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for SlioeShining lv achines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clamps for shoe shining machines and has for an object to provide a clamp for holding a shoe or foot in proper position upon a shoe rest while being operated upon by cleaning and polishing mechanism.

A further object of the invention is to provide a structure containing shoe cleaning and polishing means and a foot rest with a vertically movable clamping member adapted to engage the top of the instep of the foot and serve as a clamping means and guard. and a second horizontally movable Y-shaped member adapted to engage the heel of the shoe and hold it against longitudinal and lateral movement.
further object of the invention is to provide manually operable means for actu ating two clamping members simultaneouslv and in conjimction.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, comb nations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The improved clamping apparatus which forms the subject matter of this application and as disclosed in the parent application ($0 1,408 is mounted in a housing 10 containing any approved form of mechanism for operating upon the shoe as the carriage 11 for operating upon the front and sides of the shoe and the heel carriage 12 for operating upon the rear of the shoe. The specific carriages and cleaning and polishing means disclosed in the parent application form no part of the present application. llithin the housing 10 a shoe rest 13 is provided and the housing 10 is provided also with an opening 14' through which a foot may be inserted to rest upon such shoe rest 13.
Vertically slidable above the shoe rest 13 is arod 15 carrying a guard and guide member 16 having a concavity at its under side proportioned to fit over the instep of the operator indicated at Figs. 1, 2 and 8. The rod 15 is mounted to slide in any approved manner as by the bearings 17 and at the top engages a lever 18 by which the rod 15 and the guard 16 are raised against the force of gravity. The lever 18 is pivoted to the hous ing at 19 and is provided with a roller 20 in the path of movement of a second lever 21. The lever -21 is provided with a handle 22 which extends through a slot 23 in the housing 10 in position to be manually oper ated by the operator. The lever 21 is pivoted at 24 and at its end opposite the handle 22 engages a chain 25 which extends under the roller 26 immediately below the end of the lever 21 and rearwardly in the housing and over a second roller 27 and carries a weight 28 tending to hold the end of the lever 21 engaged by such chain normally downwardly.
Within the housing at the rear of the shoe rest 13 guides 29 are mounted and a frame 30 slidably mounted therein. The frame 30 carries a Y-shaped engaging member 31 proportioned to engage the rear of the shoe as indicated more particularly at Fig. 2. To the housing at 32 a lever 33 is pivoted, one end of which engages the chain 25 as shown more particularly at Fig. at and the opposite end connected by means of a link 34: with the frame 30. The connection of the lever 33 with the chain 25 forms such connection that the weight 28 tends to hold the engaging member 31 normally and yieldingly ad-.
jacent the shoe rest 13. It will be apparent from Fig. 1 that when the handle 22 is depressed to raise the opposite end of the lever 21 it thereby actuates the chain 25 and raises the weight 28 and simultaneously moves the frame 30 and engaging member 31 rearwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 and by the engagement of the lever 21 with the roller 20 moves the lever 18 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and thereby simultaneously raises the rod 15 and guard member 16. It will be apparent, therefore, that a single manual movement applied to the lever 22 through the mechanism described moves the guards l6 and 31 away from the foot rest to permit the foot to be inserted through the opening 14: as shown at Fig. and that the releasing of such manual operation serves to permit the parts to return to normal position as shown at Fig. 2 under the action of the weight of the member 16 and of the weight 28. The shape of the engaging members 16 and 31 is such that they hold the foot firmly in correct position upon the shoe rest 13 and resist the action of the cleaning and polishing brushes and other mechanism to displace the foot from such correct position. The member 16 also serves as a guard to prevent the application of dressing to certain parts of the shoe.
I claim 1. A shoe polishing machine embodying a support, a shoe rest located adjacent the support, a clamping member movable above the shoe rest, a second clamping member movable in the rear of the shoe rest, and means to simultaneously actuate the two clamping members.

A shoe polishing machine embodying a support, a shoe rest mounted adjacent the support, a clamping member movable above the shoe rest, a second clamping member movable in the rear of the shoe rest, means to hold the two clamping members normally yieldingly adjacent the shoe rest, and means to apply power to move both of such clamping members simultaneously away from the shoe rest.
3. A shoe polishing machine embodying a support, a shoe rest located adjacent the support, a clamping member movable abov the rest, a second clamping member movabie in the rear of the rest, and means to actuate the two clamping members in timed relation.
A shoe polishing machine embodying a support, a shoe rest mounted adjacent the support, a clamping member movable above the rest, a second clamping member movable in the rear of the rest, means to hold the two clamping members normally yieldingly adjacent the rest, and means to apply power to move both of said clamping members in timed relation away from the rest.
