SAFETY DEVICE. j
To ally-:hom t mug/.concern:
, Beit known that'I, DE WITT J. CURTISS,
Oneida'pinthe county of Madison andState of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices, ofv which' the followingis a specification. j This inventionl relates. to' improvements-`1 in safety devices for use on stamping and l die, presses to prevent the possibility of the hands of "the operator lfrom ybeing injured during the `operation o f the press, the object of the invention being to provide an imi r proved safety device of this character, 'l5A which is'cheap andzsimple, Which-may he readilyattached to andused in connection with any ordi/nary stamping or die press. land which also required; 2o-
y y safety, devices constructed in accordance 'may be readily adjusted as Thel inventiom consists.` ,the .construc-A tion, combination and, arrangement of de vices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the, accompanying drawings -Figure -1 is a .frontelevation of a portion of a die or dro`ppress provided withl improved with my invention. .Fig 2 is a side eleva tionofthe same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view. For the purposes bed of. an ordinary pressvis indicated at 1, dies are indicated at 2 and the usual-upwardlyj extending. standard or' upright is indicated at 3; The drop, hammer lor punch is4 indicated at. and is vertically movable in a guideway 5 with which the standard or .upright is provided.
Infaccordance with my invention. I provide a pair of supporting arms 6 which are 'attachedftoopposite sides of the standard and extend 'forwardly therefrom and are adjustable'sov that their outer ends may be raised or lowered as required. A rock shaft 7 isv mounted in bearings near the outer ends of said arms and is providedwith a" series of fender f arms S 'which Ahave upwardly eX tendi ngi'larni'sl,,Q` that pass through transverse openings in-=the1roclr 'shaftl and are secured thereto in adjiis'ted?""` sitifonby .set screws or other 'suitab'ledevice's 9a. thus adapting the fender arms tohjadjiistedgas of this ispecifi'cation the.
may bel desired. The rock shaft has a rock arm 10 near one end to .which is `attached a e .specificati@ofleftrrateht. 'Patented Mar. 21, 1916. I Applieation mea octpber 23,114. serial No. 868,317. I I l spring 11 which serves to turn' the rock'4 shaft so as to raisethefenders and turn them mwardly toward and above the dies. ,Therock shaftalso has a tappet arm 12 which extends. inwardly therefrom. The drop lis provided on one side with a laterally extending tappet stud'13 which engages with the tappet arm 12 as the drop descends, which in turn turns the -rock shaft 'so as to move the fenders outwardly. This y outward movementof the fenders will force the hand of the operator-away from the dies"y and thus effectually prevent the operators yhand .from beinglcaught in the press. On
the ensuingI up stroke of the drop ythe springv r11 turns the rock shaft and fenders in the opposite direction thus to' be fed to the press. v l/Vhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my'inventin I would have it understoody that'changes may 'be' made in' the form, proportion and construction of the several partswithout departing from the spirit of the invention `and within the scope of the, appended Claims. l y
Having thus described my invention, vI
1.` In combination with the standard and drop of a die or other like press, supporting elements adjustably attached to" the stand ard, a rock shaft mounted in said. supporting elements, fenders carried by and ad justa-ble onthe rock shaft, a spring to turn the rock shaft and fenders in one direction, a tappet arm projecting from the rock shaft, and a tappet carried by the drop to engage the tappet arm of the rock shaft when the drop *descends and thergby cause the fenders to be moved outwardly.
2. In combination with the standard and drop of a die or other like'press. supporting Velements adjustably `attached to the standard, a rock shaft mounted lin said sup -nally alinedV fenders, carried by and adjustable onv the rock shaft, a spring connected to the rock shaft adjacent one end thereof for turning the rock shaftand fenders 1n permitting the workA one dr'ectionea tappe't arm projecting in- In testimony whereof I ax `my-signa` 1.4'Wzi'1d1y-frvn-the rock shaft at a point aol-v ture in presence of two Witnesses, .Jvacent lts opposlte 6nd,.'a1'1d a tappet car- .i'e'd by the drop toengge the tappet arm of DE WITT 'v CURTISS 5 the rook shaft When'the drop descends and Witnesses:
tghereby cause the fenders to be moved out- DAVID SKILLIN,
wardly. THOMAS J. CARSON.
