Application filed-November so, 191%.- seriar no: 64,286.
To'aZZfwhom it mag/concern: 1 Be 1t known that I, STEVE GARAY. a subcct of the King of Hungary, residing at Cleveland. in the county of Cuyahoga and A further object of the invention is the provision of a sanitary cuspidor having a foot-actuatedclosure and provided with atripping means for retaining the closure in its open positionwhenever desired.
A still further object is to provide a cus-- pi dor which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture but which at the same time is entirely sanitary when positloned for use in such places as offices and railway stations" where the same are subject to variations in heat conditions.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device partially broken away and parts being illustrated in dotted lines in their open position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged side elevations of the tripping member in its retracted and projected positions respectively, and, Fig. 5 is an end elevation thereof in its trip position.
The present form of cuspidor broadly consists of a substantially cubical casing 10 having a chamber '11 therein for the reception of a spittle container 12 furnished with an antiseptic fluid 13. The top 14 of the casing is slightly inclined toward the center thereof and is provided with a central entrance opening 15 having a tapered funnel 16 extending therefrom to a point directly above and slightly spaced from the container 12 A lid 17 is providedfo'r the casing 10, being attached thereto by: means of' hinges 18 and it will be understood that the conta ner 12 is made in the form of a drawer being adapted for removal from the'casing 10 by'withdr'awing the same therefrcm by means of the/handle or knob 19 positioneduponthe rear end of the'container'l2 in a plane below" the lid hinees18'.
Anoperating lever 20 is provided for actuating the lid 17 and has its forward end attached by a pivotal connection 2-1 to the side wall22 of the casing 10 and adjacent the forward side of the latter. A rea rwardly extending arm" 23* is carried by the lid 17 adjacentthe casing side 22 and ispivotally connected by means of a link 24 with therear free end of the lever 20. Afootengaging or pedal portion 25 lat'erallv projects from the lever 21 and is preferably provide'd with arou'ghened surface while an engagement-of the-lever 2'0 with the floor 26 acts as a stop and limits the downward movement of the lever. By this arrangement it'will be seen that whenever a person desi-res'to' open the cuspidor by swinging the lid 17 thereof to its open position, the foot is placed upon the pedal 25 and pressure being exerted thereon the lid is made to assume the position illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 by means of the operative connections between the lever 20 and the arm 23 afforded by the pivoted link 24.
It being sometimes found desirable to retain the lid 17 in its open position. a latch 27 is mounted upon the casing side 22. This latch consists of a tubular barrel 28 perpendicularly projecting from thecasing side 22 and provided with a bolt 29 slidably mounted therein and having an expansion spring 80 arranged within the barrel 28 and inwardly of the bolt 29 for urging the bolt to its projected position. A bayonet slot 81 is provided in the barrel 28 and through this slot an angular trip arm 32 extends, it being understood that the arm 32 is positioned within the radial portion of the slot 31 with the spring 30 held under compression when the device is normally positioned inoperative and with the lid 17 closed. Upon depressing the lever 20 by means of the foot of the operator. the toe may be readily employed for shifting the trip arm 32 downwardly into the longitudinal portion of the bayonet slot 31 so that the spring 30 will project the bolt 29 above the lever and thus hold the lever depressed and the lid 17 in its' open position, such operative locked posilower surface of the'lid which'inight occur I if the lid flatly engaged the casing top 14:
and this feature is designed to enhance the] I ing, a stub shaft carried by the casing ad- .jacent the lower end thereof at the end of sanitary features of the device.
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from the above detailed description thereof, the container 12 being readily removed by means of the knob 19 whenever desired to clean the same while the lid 17 is readily opened by depressing the pedal 25 with the foot when desired to use the cuspidor, and the lid may be retained in its open position as long as desired by releasing the latch bolt 29, the latter being also readily returned to its normal retracted position by means of the trip arm 32 thereof.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements ofthe parts may be made without departing It will be understood that the from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
NVhat I claim as new is A cuspidor comprising a receiving cas ing, a' top entrance opening therefor, a lid hinged to the said casing and overlying said entrance opening and slightly spaced therefrom, an exteriorly positioned arm rearwardly projecting from the rear corner of the said lid and in alinement therewith, an angular extension carried by said arm and outwardly directed relative to the casprojecting end of the foot lever,an outwardly-projecting pedal attached to the said lever, the lever being laterally posi-V tioned relative to the casing, and means carried by the casing adapted to engage the foot actuating means for holding the lid in open position. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
