PUMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE O. MALAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Hilaire, in the county of Pennington and State of'Minnesota, have invented a new 'and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
The. device forming the subject matter of this application is a pump, the invention aiming to provide. a novel driving mechanism for the plunger portion of the pump.
It is within the scope of the invention to provide novel means whereby the plunger portion of the pump may be made to operate without jar. y
a The invention aims'to improve generally and to enhance the utility of structures of that type disclosed.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described andclaimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows the invention in elevation; Fig. 2 is an elevation wherein the device is viewed at right angles to the showing of Fig. 1;

In carrying out the present invention there is provided a base 1 carrying a standard 2; Mounted on the base 1 is a bearing frame 3 terminated in an upwardly prolonged extension 4. Disposed parallel to the extension 4 of the frame 3 is a standard '5 which is carried by the base 1, the standard 5 if-desired being connected by abrace 6 to the base 1. Mounted upon the base 1 or otherwise supported is a pump 7 which may be of any desired construction.

Rim bands 11 circumscribe the heads 9 and extend inwardly beyond the inner or adjacent faces of the heads. Extended between the rim bands 11 and the hub 10 are curvilinear buckets 12. As shown the supply for the wheel 8 comprlses a fiume 16 upheld by a support 17 in the base 1, the water being carried away by a tail race 18 upheld by the base 1. One end of the shaft 14 extends between the frame 3 and the standard 5 and to this end of the shaft is secured a gear wheel 19 meshmg into a pinion 20 secured to a shaft 21 journaled in the frame 3 and in the standard 5. Secured to the shaft 21 is a gear wheel 22 meshing into a pinion 23 carried by'a shaft 24 journaled in the extension 4 of the frame 3 and in the standard 5. The shaft 24 carries a gear wheel 25 meshing into a pinion 26 carried by a shaft 27. The shaft 27 is journaled in the extension 4 of the frame 3 and in the standard 5. The pinion 2G is operatively connected with the shaft 27 by means of a spline 29, the construction being such that although the pinion may slide longitudinally of the shaft, an operative, rotary connection exists between these parts.
Any suitable means maybe provided for shifting the pinion 26 on the shaft 27 to move the pinion in and out of mesh with the gear wheel 25'.- As disclosed best in Fig. 4, the hub 28 of the pinion 26 may be provided with a circumscribing groove 30 receiving projections 31 on a'shifting collar 32 connected with a ring 33" by means of a spider 34, the ring 33 being mounted to reciprocate on the shaft 27. An actuating member for the collar 32 is provided, the actuating member being in the form of a U-shaped element comprising arms 35 mounted to slide in the extension 4, the inner ends of the arms being connected with the ring 33, and the outer ends of the arms merging into a handle 36. 1
Secured 'to one end of the shaft 27 is a crank disk 37 carrying a wrist pin 38 receivthe shaft 43 and the shaft 43 may rock, or
the shaft 43 may be fixed, the pendulum rod swinging on the shaft-all as will be understood clearly by a mechanic having before him the present disclosure. Mounted for adjustment longitudinally of the pendulum rod 42 is a weight 47 held in place by a set screw 48. One end of the head 41 of the pendulum 42 is offset as shown at 44 and pivoted thereto as shown at 45 is the upper end of a plunger 46 constituting a part of the pump 7.
A shaft 49 is journaled for rotation in the standard 2 and in a casing 50 carried by the'standard," one end of the shaft 49 being squared as shown at 51 to receive a wrench or key. Secured to the shaft 49 is a drum 52 aboutwhich is trained a flexible element 53 carrying a. weight 54. Secured to the shaft 49 within the contour of the casing 50 is a pulley 55. A pulley 56 is secured to the shaft 14 of the water wheel 8 and about the pulleys 55 and 56 is trained a belt 57 which may be used for elevating the weight 54. One end of the water "wheel 8 carries a ratchet wheel 58 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 59 secured to the pulley 56.
The function of the shaft 49 and parts operatively connected therewith is to impart an initial rotation to the water wheel, thereby facilitating thestarting of the device.
T he weight 54 actuates the flexible element 53,'the same rotating the shaft 49 through the instrumentality of the drum 52. WVhen the shaft 49 is rotated, the pulley 55 on the shaft 49 will actuate the belt 57, the'latter rotating the pulley 56 which is loose on the shaft 14. The pawl 59 on the pulley 56 coacts with the ratchet wheel 58 on the water wheel 8 and rotates the water wheel.
When the water wheel is rotated by Water delivered thereon by means of the flume 16 Copies of this patient may be obtained for or otherwise the pawl 59 will click over the ratchet wheel 58, as will be obvious from Fig. 1. When the water wheel 8 is rotated, motion will be transmitted to the pump plunger 46 by a gear train comprising the shaft 14, the gear wheel 19, the pinion 20, the shaft 21, the gear wheel 22, the pinion 23, the shaft 24, the gear wheel 25, the pinion 26, the shaft 27, the crank disk 37, the pitman .39' and the pendulum 42. The weight 47 may be shifted longitudinally'of the pendulum rod 42 to vary the moment of the weight and consequently to affect the speed of reciprocation of the plunger 46.
The plunger 46 may be placed out of gear at any time by moving the pinion 26 laterally so that the same does not mesh into the gear wheel 25, this operation being carried out through the instrumentality of the;
actuating member 3635, the ring 33, the spider 34, the shiftingcollar 32, its. projections 31 and the grooved hub 28 of the pinion 26.
By means of the gear train comprising the various pinions above described, a rapid reciprocation will be imparted to the plunger 46 of the pump, the pendulum 42 acting as an equalizing or stabilizing device. The weight 54 and parts coiiperating therewith constitute a yieldably actuated means for imparting an initial rotation to the water wheel 8.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is p In a device of the class described, a sup p0. ting structure; a pendulum including a transversehead and a depending stem, the head being fulcrumed intermediate its ends on the supporting structure; a weight adjustable-along the stem; means for holding the weight in adjusted positions on the stem; a pump including a plunger pivoted to one end of the head; a gear train carried by the supporting structure and including a crank; a pitman connecting the crank with the other end of the head; a clutch interposed in the gear train; a water wheel operatively connected with the gear train; 'upper'and lower pulleys; means for supporting the pulleys for rotation; a continuous belt en gaged around the pulleys; pawl and ratchet mechanism connecting the lower pulley with the water wheel; and yieldably actuated OLE o.
