Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 7, 1915. Serial No. 54,589.
To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ROBERT DroE, citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Elastic Dolls and other Figures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dolls and figures of other kinds, and has for its object to provide improved means for connecting the limbs or other members .of such figures to the body thereof, and it is particularly applicable to dolls or other figures made of rubber or other elastic material.
The members of such figures are ordinarily connected to the body by ball and socket joints including a rubber cord or the like. This is objectionable and costly for a number of reasons, and the rubber cord tends to elongate and make a loose joint. By means of the present invention cords or the like are unnecessary, and the members can be joined in such manner as'to permit them to be turned to various angles, the joints comprising abutting walls with registering openings which receive the shank of a double headed button which holds the parts together. The members being elastic, the holes expand to slip over the heads of the button when the parts are assembled.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a perspective of a doll embodying the invention. 2 is a section of one of the joints..
The doll body is indicated at 3, the head at 4, the arms at 5, and the limbs at 6, all joined to the body and capable of being turned to various positions.
The joint preferably comprises a shallow socket or concavity 9 which receives a convex curved projection 10 on the limb or other member, the abutting surfaces being curved to the same radius to fit closely together. Instead of being curved the surface can be plane where they meet. These parts Fig.
4 are united and held together by a double headed button, conveniently made of metal, and comprising a shank 11 with heads 12 at opposite ends. the length of the shank being equal to the thickness of the Walls through which it extends.
In assembling the parts the button heads are forced through the holes in the members, which expand to permit this action, and then contracting behind the heads and around the shank thereby uniting the parts and holding them together, and permitting the limbs to be turned to desired angles with respect to the body. The members can be readily pulled apart and repaired or renewed when necessary.
It ispreferable to make the button of rigid material and the members of elastic material, but the button may be made of elastic material so that its heads can be compressed and inserted through the holes, to produce a similar result.
Having described my invention What I claim is:
1. A doll or other figure having members made of elastic material and provided with registering openings, and a doubleheaded button the heads of which are inserted through said openings by expanding the latter, to connect said members.
2. A doll or other figure comprising separate members having registering openings, and a double headed button the heads of 'which are inserted through said openings heads at the opposite ends thereof, the heads being inserted through said openings by expanding the same, and the edges of said openings contracted around the shank, between the heads, after the latter are inserted.
